Share your experiences with heater replacement and home energy audit rebates. We are in the process of vetting contractors to replace our home heater - an oil to gas conversion - and one of them is proposing some home energy remediations, citing saving by taking advantage of NJ's clean energy program. I have a small, one bedroom flat in London with no access to gas. I want to replace the existing (quite old) storage heater with something more efficient and effective. Which storage heater to choose? Would you have any hints, advice, comments? What should I consider when buying one? Have you got any positive experience with any modern electric storage heaters? My new apartment is north facing and the wall heater struggles with keeping the temperature at a decent level. I've thought about purchasing one of those Quartz heaters that I can set the temp on and using that to heat my small living space. Another option would be one of the portable radiator type heaters. I'm looking to heat 400 square feet and like the idea of setting a temp and having it stay close to that number. With the wall heater it is a wild guess at where to set the dial. Suggestions? Would this be more economical than using the 30+ year old electric wall heater? [more inside]

My "Williams 30,000 BTU Natural Gas Direct-Vent Wall Furnace" is an eyesore and I'd love to build my own custom cover for it, but is that safe? Can I only use metal or can I use wood? I'd have a friend build it since I don't know much about it, but I'm wondering what I can do to hide or replace it. BTW I rent my apartment, so any changes I make should technically be reversible. Link for reference.
We are in a small apartment in Georgia. It's going to be cold by Georgia's standards: the forecasts predict a minimum of about eight degrees Fahrenheit. We're leaving our taps running slightly. We've done all we can to insulate the windows. We want to know whether to leave our gas fire on or off. If we turn it off, we increase the chance of a pipe bursting. But we're worried that leaving it on will be dangerous. We don't have a carbon monoxide detector. The only other heater we have is a small electric storage heater. Please help, metafilterians!
I have a 150 watt ceramic infrared heat bulb similar to this one http://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiCare-Ceramic-Infrared/dp/B0002AQCPK that I use next to my desk to help keep me warm. It produces no visible light, only heat. Sometimes I have the urge to stare at it, can it hurt my eyes from the infrared radiation, similar to how looking at a regular light bulb can hurt your eyes? I am also interested in how these bulbs work, and the type of infrared radiation they give off if someone can explain it to me.
I have found that space heater with plastic anywhere on it starts to smell like burning plastic if you run it alot. I have also found that the thermostats on a lot of space heaters do not work well. example you set it to 73 but it just runs and never turns off or turns off before reaching 73.

We have a large (~500 sq ft) family room which is not connected to our central heat. We'd like to use a space heater (maybe 2 *) to heat it in the winter. What's the difference between the cheap little ones and the more expensive ones? [more inside]
What is this type of heating unit? There are two of them in a 600 sq. ft condo I am thinking of purchasing. The listing says it is "Other/Electric." I have only ever seen something like this in a hotel. My memory of them, is that they are finicky and imprecise! I am afraid that the bills are going to get out of control. What kind of utilities might I see from such a thing? Second floor of a low-rise condo, with outside shared hallways. Toronto, so, winter. (The current owner's bills are supposedly inaccurate because they had a newborn, and were keeping it cranked up.) It's helping me decide whether I can afford this condo. (It's by the beach!) I have just put in a SmartThings home automation system, which is supercool. Unfortunately, our living room is also supercool - the heat there doesn't work well. I want to be able to turn on a space heater remotely and I need to figure out how to do it... [more inside]
My gas hot water heater's pilot light has been going out regularly. I replaced the thermocouple in an effort to solve the problem, but I seem to have botched it: Not only does the pilot light still go out after the tank is heated, but now the gas continues to flow after the pilot goes out. Last night around 5 in the morning, we woke up because it smelled like natural gas--hard. After determining it wasn't coming from the oven, I remembered groggily to check the maintenance closet in our hallway, which contains two water heaters--one for our apartment, one for the apartment next door--and the natural gas furnace that heats our apartment through vents. I think something is happening to our furnace that causes it to do this, but I don't know what; I managed to stop it, but I'm not sure how. [more inside]

I have a 1700 square ft. house. I have an air conditioner/heating system that is set up to operate with the whole house as one zone. I have one room that is out of proportion to the rest of the of the rooms in the house (much larger, much higher ceiling) that is always hotter in the summer and colder in the winter. So I'm thinking the solution is for that room to be separated into a second zone. How? [more inside]
