Is this acid reflux? Is this heartburn?

YANAD - but I went and saw a doctor and I'm still a little confused about things! The medication isn't helping and the symptoms aren't "standard", so is this reflux or something else? [more inside]

Preventing heartburn before a large meal

Asking for a friend: He's going out for a large meal that has given him heartburn in the past. He wants to have the meal anyway. In case it's important, it consists of a steak, potatoes and some vegetables. Is there anything he can do to stop heartburn before it comes? Non-medication options are appreciated (foods he can eat beforehand, anything behavioral, natural remedies, etc).

Alcohol = burny burny heartburn. Why? How can I fix it?

I understand you are not my gastroenterologist. I'll settle for input from a personally knowledgeable fellow MeFi'er. Has anyone suddenly become unable to drink alcohol, maybe after a GI illness? Does this condition go away? [more inside]

I'm in a lot of pain and want to know why.

About two years ago I started having various health issues, and since then, it's all gone downhill. It's also become clear that I need to switch doctors, so I'm asking you, Metafilter, to help me prepare for the new doctor. What's wrong with me? You are obviously not my doctor! [more inside]

The heart, it burns us

Do my symptoms warrant a visit to the doctor? It sounds like acid reflux to me (so I assume I'd need an appointment), but I'd like your opinion before I go. Involves chronic coughing after every meal, lasting for at least an hour or so, and heartburn multiple times a week. [more inside]

Help a foodie survive a bland diet!

Bland Diet -- tips and recipes for surviving. My sweetie has severe acid reflux -- about as bad as acid reflux can get. So he has to stick to a bland diet for the foreseeable future. This is particularly hard on him because he is a real foodie and enjoys eating out. The doctor did not give him really specific instructions for what or what not to eat. Somethings are obvious -- no citrus, no alcohol, no chocolate. But some things are less obvious -- since it's meant to be low fat is butter okay? [more inside]

Pass Gas

My wife and mother-in-law both suffer from the same condition. If they don't eat frequently, they tell me they get 'gas'. Not gas out the ass, but gas in their stomachs / chests that can get quite painful. It is quite debilitating for my wife. When they get this 'gas' if they eat, eventually it will go away on its own or with a bunch of burps. I am not sure if they are calling it 'gas' and should be calling it heartburn, or something else. All I know is my Google-Fu cannot find anything about NOT eating and getting gas or some other painful belly / chest thingy. Anyone else have experience with this kind of ailment. Is there a name for getting 'gas' when you don't eat? Help me solve this medical mystery.

I know you are not my doctor, but right now, no one is!

Over the last few years, a number of health problems have flared up that I suspect might have something to do with each other: weight gain, fatigue, acid-reflux/loose stools (possibly related to gluten intolerance) and irregular periods. What kind(s) of doctor should I see? I'm in Minneapolis. [more inside]

Make the heartburn pain stop, please.

I have terribly painful heartburn. Less frequently since my doctor prescribed Prevacid a year or so ago, and less frequently still since I've been watching what I eat and losing weight for the last five months. But I still get a bout of it every month or two, usually hitting in the late evening, and keeping me awake until 6 or 7am before it subsides. How can I get some sleep instead of staying awake all night in pain? [more inside]
