Where can I find trustworthy nutrition and diet information?

I'm currently participating in the "Whole Life Challenge" which has me eating a paleo-ish diet for 2 months. I've been surprised by how quickly I've acclimated to it. It's gotten me interested in understanding more about nutrition. I'm particularly interested in actual facts regarding "paleo eating" and what nutritionists/doctors actually think of as a healthy diet these days. [more inside]

What are some good 'emergency foods' to keep on hand?

Currently I'm not so well off financially and would like ideas for relatively inexpensive, healthy 'emergency foods' that last ages and are good to keep on hand. Think steel cut oats and peanuts, foods that can fill you up over and over before you run out. I want to fill my apartment with such foods.

SOUP!

I love soup, but only SOME soups. I am very much a fan of a chunky soup in a broth where I can see each individual ingredient rather than blended soups (Except for butternut squash/ pumpkin or tomato soup which I do enjoy on occasion). Now I'm getting bored of the soups I have on rotation so I'm looking for more ideas of healthy soups that are chunky rather than blended. [more inside]

Are the health effects of poor eating during young adulthood reversible?

I recently rewatched Supersize Me a documentary which goes into the deleterious effects fast food has on the human body. The short-term changes in (director and star) Morgan's physical and mental well-being were readily apparent, but then I got to wondering about the long-term effects. Medical experts of MeFi: Assuming someone like Morgan eats fast food for years as a young adult then switches to a healthy diet, what long term complications would he notice later in life? Are these side-effects reversible? [more inside]

Upgrade my bean bowl and noodle soup! (No sugar and salt edition)

I've been trying a no sugar/complex carbohydrates diet by dumping vegetables and canned salmon together with beans in a bowl, or dumping vegetables and canned salmon together with shirataki noodles in a bowl and then pouring in hot water. This gets old, fast. What are some ways to simply upgrade the taste of my meals, without added sugar, simple carbohydrates, or too much added salt? [more inside]

I want to reward myself for doing good stuff, for real, not with points.

I want to reward some good/healty behaviours automatically. Examples might be reaching 13K steps on fitbit or for reaching a fitbit goal for X days in a row. The obvious solution is IFTTT (not all goals are fitbit related, but I think I can make an IFTTT trigger happen easily enough). The problem is that I can't think of any IFTTT do-able reward. I am open to non-IFTTT-based solutions otherwise. [more inside]

Gluten-Free, Slow-Carb, and Vegan

Greetings All: I have been reading up on transitioning to a vegan diet and there are so many things to think about. One of the best comments I received from someone on a previous post is that eating vegan does not equal being healthy necessarily. So I have been reading some books about eating a healthy vegan diet. Lunch Salad Spreadsheet Project

I'm trying to eat/pack easy, healthy lunches, but I've accepted that I will never be a green salad for lunch every day person. What I do like are "salads" that are variations of: grain + protein + fruit or veg + nuts or cheese + other. My dream is to create a spreadsheet where I could take an easily-prepared item from each column to construct such a salad, and make a big batch on Sundays that would last me the week. I'd rather just throw ingredients together than follow an exact recipe. [more inside]

Healthy Eating for the Anti-Foodie

I need some recommendations on how to eat healthy for the people that genuinely do not like to or have any interest in cooking. I work a lot and I have no interest spending the free time that I do have cooking. I eat out almost every meal and the meals that I do eat at home are usually microwave meals. When you eat out a lot, it can be difficult to find quick healthy options. I am trying to lose a few lbs and probably could stand to eat a little healthier. I am hoping to get some recommendations on how to eat healthy without the usual 'just cook it, it only takes X minutes' or 'its really easy' comments. Not only am I cooking-adverse, the grocery store may be one of my least favorite places. Has anyone tried one of those companies that gives you a weeks worth of food at a time (do you have to cook the food?)? If it is helpful, I am a single guy in my early-thirties living in Georgia. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Healthy comfort food recipes?

This week we'll be embarking on a complicated task at work that will take about two days. What is the best drinking water option?

Been reading a few articles about tap water vs. bottled water, and some of these mention how tap water is at least the same, or even better (1, 2, 3, and 4) and of course, less expensive. I live in Toronto and I buy PC's bottled water (simply because it doesn't have that artifical taste that other brands have in my opinion), but I'm starting to look at other options. Between bottled water, water cooler bottles, and installing a tap filter, which is my best option?

Sane eating and dieting rules

Since I was a teenager(so 20 years now) I've struggled with eating and I've to yo-yo'd from skinny (nearly anorexic) to 30lbs overweight. I have tried everything (starving myself as a teenager, weight watchers, Atkins, calorie counting, high fiber, one plate, cross fit, seeing a nutritionist) none of it has done what I want: a sane eating lifestyle that I can live with for the rest of my life and maintain a healthy weight. So I've decided to try and come up with rules of the road for eating and exercising that I can live with forever. [more inside]

What are some meals that are nearly all fruits & vegetables?

The other day I made a meal that was nearly all vegetables -- sweet potatoes, roasted asparagus, and an apple, arugula, and feta salad. It was a great meal and I didn't even realize until I was eating it that it was basically all vegetables, rather than my normal routine of basing a meal around a starch (although the sweet potato does have a lot of carbs). How do I avoid gaining weight and stay on a diet while on a cruise ship?

This year I made a resolution for healthier living and have been successful so far. Overcame a lot of bad habits compared to where I started. But I'm going on a cruise with a group of friends next month. From what I've been told it's going to be an around the clock buffet.
