Recs for a Dallas psychiatrist and a G.P. who take Cigna insurance?

Depressive here. If you know of a Dallas psychiatrist that you have heard good things about who takes Cigna, I sure would appreciate their name. I could also use the name of a good general practitioner that takes Cigna, but this is secondary to my main concern of finding the psychiatrist. Thanks for any suggestions. [more inside]

My employer increased my hours but is not giving me benefits

I've been working as a part time employee for awhile but recently my hours have been increased for some special projects. I've been working 30-40 hour weeks. I do not get health insurance or any other benefits because I am not considered a full time employee. Are they required to give me benefits at some point? How should I approach this with them? I'm in the US. [more inside]

Illness in the US, but magically, no healthcare!

I just returned from West Africa and have a number of symptoms consistent with malaria - or the flu. I have no healthcare, through circumstances beyond my control (I'll elaborate) until May 1. When is it worth it to go to the doctor to get tested? How can I try to keep this from being a pre-existing condition, given that it may be the recurrent form? [more inside]

How do I know if I'm covered?

I am a trans woman. Recently, I received a job offer from a private higher education institution in New York City. I would really like to accept the job, but repeated conversations with the individual who recruited me—who has been asking questions on my behalf to the institution's Human Resources department—have left me unsure whether or not their health insurance will cover trans-related care. How do I get this information? Can I get this information? [more inside]

Insurance company denied coverage for $1300 blood work - what now?

I had a blood test done to check for a gene mutation that my family recently discovered we may have. It was just blood work from an in-network lab so I assumed it would be covered, per my "schedule of benefits." Today I received a letter from my health insurance provider saying this testing is not covered. The cost is $1300 and I definitely do not have $1300. I haven't been billed by the blood lab, but I imagine that it's coming soon and I will be fucked. My insurance company also said that these limitations on testing are available to view in their policy bulletins, of which I have obviously never checked or even knew existed -- I was going entirely off my "schedule of benefits" and I believed that in-network blood work was just my co-pay. More details below: [more inside]

How to get insurance to cover family/couples counselling

My partner and I are considering going into couples counselling. The insurance plan we share does not cover this type of counselling "except when rendered in connection with services provided for a treatable mental disorder." One of us is in treatment for a mental disorder, so this seems worth investigating. Can you offer us any experience or advice about dealing with therapists and/or insurance companies in this situation? [more inside]

Covering the uncoverable

Health insurance quagmire (NYC based) A year and a half ago for the first time in my life I got health insurance. It wasn't an easy process, as I am a small business owner, and it was difficult to find a policy that my employment status (I was categorized as self employed for this policy) made me eligible for. All was fine until last November, when I made a late payment. I thought I had put my payments on auto pay on my online banking, but apparently I messed up the process along the way and the payment didn't go out. [more inside]

Anxiety about health issues while waiting to see a doctor.

I recently got a job and health insurance. Hooray. Now I can afford to see a doctor for some medical concerns I’ve had and let go for too long because I didn’t have insurance and they didn’t seem pressing. However, I can’t get in to see a doctor for at least a month or more, and for some reason, now that I do have insurance and have to wait so long to see someone, I’m suddenly having tremendous anxiety about my health. Help me put this in perspective and/or figure out what to do. Details about my specific concerns and situation inside. [more inside]

new health insurance abroad- pre-existing conditions

I have a friend living in the US with US health insurance. He wants to move back to Panama, where he's from. He's recently had a heart surgery, and tells me that he won't be able to get health insurance in Panama as this would be a pre-existing condition there. It's not a pre-existing condition currently and is covered by his US health insurance. He therefore, doesn't think he can move back home. Its a stressful situation for him and I really wish I could give him some meaningful advice, preferably something that includes him retaining medical coverage either in US or Panama, and being able to move back to Panama. I remember from looking into this myself earlier that it did seem possible to retain US insurance coverage if you live outside the US but maybe only if you are a citizen. Please help!
