Travelling with Warfarin

I am on Warfarin for FVL thrombophilia (7.5 mg/day, INR = 2.0-3.0) and I am thinking about travelling for more than a month away from home. Have you done this? How did you get your blood test done and find a doctor? [more inside]

Blarrrgghhhhhhhhh.......

My dept is becoming part of the National Division (home office in Georgia) rather than the Regional Division (where I now work at Regional Division Home Office in PA). I am not physically moving anywhere. My employer is now National Div, even though it is just the parent/umbrella of Regional Div. My insurance carrier will now be BCBS of GA instead of Highmark BS of PA. ADHD is covered by Highmark. It is not by BCBS of GA. I will end up paying about $4000 in out of pocket expenses due to this. Is this legal? What are my options? Supplemental insurance for MH does not exist. I make too much for any state aid and am ineligible for other state MH programs. Why is US health care bill affordable?

What reason is there to believe that the recently-passed health care bill is affordable for America? Sure, the CBO projects it to reduce deficits, but isn't it required to use possibly unrealistic legislative assumptions, like Medicare cuts that have never been implemented in the past? Given the incredible growth of Medicare and Social Security costs over the last decades, the powerful interests (like doctors) that may stand against harsh cost-cutting, and the US's aging but heavily-voting population -- what reason is there to believe this bill doesn't start up yet another fiscally irresponsible and politically untouchable entitlement program?

I pay for an individual health-care policy with a ridiculous premium (I'm in grad school, so I have no medical coverage available to me, as the school's plan only covers undergrads). Why isn't free market best solution to US healthcare crisis?

What are the best arguments (links to articles/sites appreciated) that government regulation and tax code distortions are not the primary causes of the American healthcare crisis? Why wouldn't a more free-market approach (i.e. remove the obstacles to far more vigorous competition between insurers for individual premiums) be the solution? If adverse selection is a reason, how is that any worse for health care than for other insurance markets (e.g. life insurance)?

A site showing health insurance reform talking points, counterpoints, countercounterpoints?

Where can I find a concise health insurance reform argument-counterargument-countercounterargument talking point "tree"? e.g. my congressman, TM(R) says "you should be able to buy insurance from out of state..."; but Ezra Klein says that would yield a Race to the Bottom, like with credit card cos. TM says "...like we already do with auto insurance"; but an E.K. commenter says that with car insurance, the insurer must obey the insuree's state regs. (is this true?) So, do all of these exist in a boiled-down form somewhere? Basically, I'm looking for a site that sheds light on health insurance talking points the way skepticalscience.com does for climate.

Ontario Patient Enrollment Model

Ontario Patient Enrollment Model. Can anyone elaborate as to what this program is all about? My doctors office is really putting the pressure on me to sign this thing, but it seems rather restrictive. Apparently it's voluntary, but they seem rather adamant that I register as a patient, and won't stop calling me about it. Am I just being unreasonable here, or is my doctors office just being a pain in the arse?

what happens if it's physical vs. fiscal

I've heard it said that (in theory) the advent of a cure for cancer would cause a serious financial crisis because of the vast scale of the healthcare complex devoted to current treatments. So, the obvious question: Is there any credible evidence that promising (not woo-woo) therapies for diseases such as cancer and diabetes have been derailed because of the sheer scale of financial and institutional resources invested in the status quo?

Is health care a Ponzi scheme?

Is health care a Ponzi scheme? I'm trying to work out my feelings about the health care debate, and our moral obligations to take care of each other. Will improved health care just lead to larger populations and longer life spans, and more and more expenses to take care of them all? Am I a bad person for thinking this? I smoke, so I'll probably check out early without consuming all your future resources on my elder care. Does this mitigate my xenocidal tendencies or make them worse?

If it was COBRA...it would've bitten me AND my family!

Since being fired last month, I'm in the process of getting health insurance for my family. But, I'm kind of confused with this COBRA '65/35 for nine months' deal with the government. I'm awaiting to hear from our local Blue Cross provider for a 9/15 effective date, but, our calculations show that the COBRA discounted price for nine months would be roughly $150 less than the Blue Cross premium. Now, it is my understanding that you have to elect COBRA AND send in your request for the 65/35 subsidy at the same time. If I don't get the subsidy, I want to go with Blue Cross. How do I do this properly? Is there any way I can apply for the subsidy without requesting COBRA at the same time?

Health care rationing in the US?

There is much talk about health care rationing in Britain, for example. How do I find out more about the status of rationing in the United States, my health care (nice employer based) and Medicare in particular. Is it the case that with health care in the US, private or Medicare, cost is never a reason to deny a procedure? That people under Medicare, for example, get all of those 50,000$ drugs that give you 6 months of life? How can I find out if my plan covers every possible procedure or not? I'm less concerned with the issue of rescision as a roundabout way of denying care versus explicit denial of care based on cost.
