I'm a typical ADD adult, and I don't have health insurance until at least September. I'm down to my last few Ritalin tablets, and I need a new Rx. How much does Ritalin (or Concerta, Adderall, etc) typically cost without insurance, and can I minimize these costs without having to sign up for an interim insurance plan? What are the best generic varieties of the big name psychostimulants? Will getting an Rx while uninsured just kick up my fees when I am finally covered by a health plan because my condition is pre-existing?

Health insurance for someone taking a break from college? My girlfriend is taking a few months off from college and so won't be eligible for her parents' health insurance. She doesn't have a job that provides benefits, either. She's in her early 20s and is pretty healthy, but has really awful luck when it comes to random health issues popping up and so it would be a good idea for her to have insurance in the next few months. She's off her parents' policy in the next week or two. What can she do? Would COBRA apply in this case? What other temporary insurance providers are there?

I am going to visit a doctor, but my Bluecross Blueshield/billing will not show his name and instead will show the doctor he reports to (according to the frond desk person), since he isn't in today. Sounds kind of strange to me. Is there anything I should be asking/should be aware of? (Or is this normal?)

California legal/medical/ethical question: In advance of my going to the hospital to give birth within the next few weeks, I decided to download and fill out California's standard Advance Health Care Directive form, i.e. a living will (and to have my husband fill his out too, as long as we were at it). However, Google informs me via multiple sources that this form, even if signed and notarized, is
"not valid if pregnant". WTF?

There's a
commission in New York State that's going to force closure of a bunch of hospitals across the state, including a few in my area (
Buffalo). They are also going to force a few private organizations to merge. What gives them the ability to dictate this sort of thing? Is it the threat of withholding funding? I've read many news articles on the closure recommendations, but have missed out on a good ultimate explanation.
