Despite being a lifelong American, I still don't really understand our healthcare system. Can you give me some info - treat me like I'm 5 years old. [more inside]
My unmarried partner and I are pregnant for the first time, while on a six-month working trip to NYC (four months left). We found out on the weekend and in order to be (partly) covered by our insurance for prenatal care, we need to provide a LOT of information to the insurance company: chosen providers, required tests, costs, etc. We don’t have a clue where to start with this: not just because this is our first pregnancy, but also because the American health care system is so foreign to us. We need help on how to start choosing a temporary care provider and… well… everything else! Can you help? [more inside]
In August of 2015 I had brain surgery at the Cleveland Clinic to remove a tumor. It was benign. I've been back several times for radiation therapy and other follow-up appointments. Everything has been really, really great. I mean, as great as brain surgery can be, I guess. My right vocal cord is paralyzed as a result of cranial nerve trauma, but other than that, I am here, and I am happy. There is, however, the small issue of the bill. [more inside]
A relative of mine is visiting the US without travel insurance, and their child has been hospitalised in New York and is receiving treatment. This relative does not have the means to pay for the hospital stay or treatment, so what will the consequences be? [more inside]
I have some medical bills that my late husband apparently accrued in the last months of his life. I've been trying to figure out for what and how to get them covered by his insurance for months now and it appears that it's gone to collections. What should I do? [more inside]
UK Healthcare: Is there a way of remaining registered with your GP when recently homeless and staying with friends in other cities? Or accessing GP services generally without a permanent address? [more inside]
What can I do about an $800 hospital bill? And can an ultrasound really be $1700? [more inside]
I'm a pharmacy student pursuing post-grad training. How do I write a strong letter of intent to convince program directors that I'm the best person for the position? [more inside]
I'm about to age out of my parent's healthcare system (turning 26 late December) and as a stroke of unfortunate timing I'm completely out of a job right now. I'm incredibly uninformed about how the new US healthcare system is set up other than a vague knowledge that there's potentially a fine for not having insurance, but I don't even know how much or when it'd kick in. My question is, basically: As someone unemployed and living in Massachusetts, either how much would I have to pay to buy my own insurance (and where would I go to do so) or how much is the fee for me if I can't actually buy it?
As my life unfolds, there is in the short term a growing likelihood I may need to seek residential treatment / hospitalization for major depression. I’m finding it very hard to do research, as most easily accessible search engine results appear (to me) to have been gamed or SEO’d, and what few respectable websites I do come across are barebones or tight-lipped. Perhaps this is because of a wider turn from institutionalization or residential treatment. But still I have questions, and I’d be grateful for any insight... [more inside]
My mother recently had a wretched time at Reston hospital. She doesn't want to go back there, nor do the rest of us. We'd like to have a plan about a better hospital to go to the next time there is an emergency. We've looked at Yelp, etc., but would like some more filtered insight into our options in the area.
I am not irresponsible! I am a US Citizen who lives in a European country, where I am on state health insurance. We are back in the US for three months, and have temporary, emergency health insurance here. (We are not eligible, as non US residents, for ACA insurance.) I find myself unexpectedly but happily pregnant, with a few more months in the US to go before we return. How do I get prenatal care? [more inside]
I have worked for the federal government for five years (2 on Capitol Hill and 3 in SLC) and also for a well respected local nonprofit here in Salt Lake City, UT for the past two years. I'm Associate Director and things are good. However, unless I become Exec. Director there isn't much upward mobility. Plus, I wrote another question earlier this year about avoiding burnout, which is a problem with nonprofits, long hours, small staffs, etc. What I'm saying is I can't see working in the nonprofit world long term. I don't really see myself transferring to another nonprofit in town either. [more inside]
This may be a hopeless ask. But you, mefites, have astounded me before with your knowledge of such things. I have ADD. No one has disputed that since college. I choose to take meds for that. The meds I am on are not controlled substances...Strattera. Going to the clinic monthly is inconvenient (I don't drive because medical reasons), but my doctor requires this monthly to get my Rx refilled. It all seems ridiculous. Can I do this virtually? How? I live in Minnesota. States have different rules, I suppose. Thanks!
I'm type 1 diabetic on a low carb diet taking a basal dose of Lantus. I notice that within a wide range of daily units, I fast at a nearly constant blood glucose level of 69-72, determined with a continuous monitor and fingerstick calibration/confirmation. Why would this be happening? (I'm looking for a good explanation or resource, but not Medical Advice™ as I have a doctor I consult with before making changes to treatment.) [more inside]
Chronically ill, fixed income US expat. Is it possible to get affordable health insurance in the US? This is pretty much a hypothetical question, but I figure I’d do some research anyway. Snowflakes after the fold: [more inside]
I was recently diagnosed with a UTI at an urgent care clinic. The PA (I did not see an MD or NP) prescribed a ten-day course of cipro to treat it (500mg, twice a day, for 10 days). That seems excessive to me (though I will take the full course of antibiotics as prescribed). Is such a long course of antibiotics commonly prescribed for UTIs? [more inside]
Husband needs open heart surgery. Our preferred surgeon is not on our healthcare plan. We're going to request a benefit exception. We are in Washington state. We are on an individual plan, not with an employer. I called the insurer and requested a case worker. Any suggestions on my approach? Feeling overwhelmed already. [more inside]
I'm a nurse practitioner in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (4 years experience), and I'm applying for jobs at the National Institutes of Health. I've had one prompt and enthusiastic response, but I've heard nothing from the rest, so I have a few questions about NIH's hiring process and timeline. [more inside]
I just got a job offer (yay!) and I need help with negotiating benefits. Problem being that this is a very small and informal company while I've always worked at large multinationals with clear guidelines for these things. I have no idea how small companies work. [more inside]
I just returned from West Africa and have a number of symptoms consistent with malaria - or the flu. I have no healthcare, through circumstances beyond my control (I'll elaborate) until May 1. When is it worth it to go to the doctor to get tested? How can I try to keep this from being a pre-existing condition, given that it may be the recurrent form? [more inside]
I've been calling my psychiatrist since last week to attempt to set up an appointment. I haven't encountered an actual human's voice, nor have I been directed to voicemail. I've tried calling both of her offices repeatedly with no success (and with no way of leaving a message). What do I do now? [more inside]
I have done something very stupid: I thought I had dropped my spouse from my insurance plan during open enrollment, but never double-checked and apparently I did not. Now my HR is telling me I can't remove him until next calendar year, so I have to pay the $3200 difference for the next year. This is in the U.S., as if you can't tell from the effed-upedness of these situations stemming from employer-based healthcare. [more inside]
It has recently come to our attention that our mother is hiding—what seem to be very serious—health issues from us. We want to help her, but we're unsure how to proceed. I am seeking advice on two fronts: (1) help us navigate the current healthcare bureaucracy, and (2) help us care for someone who is probably going to try to refuse our help. All of the details inside. [more inside]
My wife has been experiencing fairly severe edema and pain for 3 months, and proteinuria for about the last month. The doctors are all stumped. On the long shot that somebody here has experienced something similar... [more inside]
I am about to enter medical school. My partner works in an entirely unrelated field, but doesn't plan to stay in that field. It recently occurred to us that (with appropriate training) he could switch to a job in healthcare that would enable us to work together after I finish my residency and begin my practice. We are trying to come up with an exhaustive list of jobs that exist in the office of a primary care physician in private practice. Can you help us flesh it out? The things we've thought of so far are nurse, nurse practitioner, billing and coding, office manager, bookkeeper. Please point out if you know of someone who does this job in the same office as their partner/spouse.

Asking for my SO. Short version: Because of incorrect information we received from ADP (our FSA administrators) in February, we're about to lose $1400 in SO's FSA that we had saved for her Lasik. We've contacted a healthcare advocate, and are trying to move up her surgery; in your experience, is there anything else we can do? [more inside]
I'm 27 and would like to become a physician's assistant (PA), but don't have any background in medicine, a prerequisite for nearly every PA program. Should I go through a phlebotomy program? Are there phlebotomy jobs out there? Would this be a good way to get working hours as a medical professional? [more inside]

I'm in the United States and will be working for myself for the first time. This is exciting, but I have a pre-existing health condition, ADHD, and I take medication daily. Will this still be covered if I go on my own health plan or will this be out of pocket? I'm male, non-smoker, mid-20s with no other pre-existing conditions. The whole new health care initiative is confusing, I was under the impression that this sort of thing is now covered.
I'm not sure if i should discontinue my health coverage or not, and how to handle it - and if there's any way to *temporarily* discontinue my health coverage. [more inside]

Depression! But maybe it's hypothyroidism? Dr google tells me it might be cancer (ovarian or bowel) when I add in the other health changes I've had over the last year. Hope me? What do I ask? Who do I see? No insurance. Location and gmail inside. [more inside]

My SO is a speech therapist/speech pathologist at a major hospital, and her department specializes in cancer patients. This can take a quite a toll on her, but the impact has worsened following her own skin cancer diagnosis last year. I was wondering if there were any books, websites, programs or resources designed to help healthcare providers deal with working with these kinds of cases, and perhaps also ones to deal with dealing with cancer diagnoses.
