I think my gallbladder’s coming out in the months to come. I seek guidance about fat-free/low-fat foods that would be safe to eat afterwards -- any advice appreciated, but I would find non-cooking options (frozen foods/delivery/restaurant) particularly useful. [more inside]
For the last few years my mother has had symptoms of schizophrenia. She believes that an organization is following her, harassing her and screwing job opportunities. She is taken things to a extreme level and has called cops accusing individuals, family members, and others who don't even know her. What do I do? [more inside]
My girlfriend just recently found out that she was dropped from her insurance. She signed up for an ACA plan, but coverage doesn't begin until the first day of May. This is a problem, because she's on several psychiatric medications that are either pivotal in allowing her to function, have terrible withdrawal symptoms, or both. [more inside]
I'm going on two months of frequent nausea. Sometimes I throw up, most times I don't. Otherwise I generally feel fine (no fatigue, headaches, other pain aside from my possible endometriosis, sniffles, fever or anything else). I've been to my GP. [more inside]
After eating, I get hot. Uncomfortably hot. I need to have lots of cold water on hand, especially after large meals. And having a fan nearby is helpful too. I feel like I'm gross and sticky just because I had a sandwich. Googling hasn't turned up much for me. What is this? [more inside]
I'm looking for a relatively fine-grained source of health and environmental data for Contra Costa County, CA. County-by-county is no good, and even city-by-city isn't that great. I'd like to see it by block if possible (zip code would be useful). Anything that fine-grained would be fine: cancer rates, mortality rates, air quality, etc. [more inside]
My husband's new job only offers one plan: a high deductible plan with $5,000 and $10,000 deductibles. We both have chronic illnesses with lots of medications and several doctors. We cannot afford to pay out of pocket for everything. What can I do? [more inside]
The older I get, the worse my sinus issues. Throughout the day, my nasal passages are mostly okay, but it never fails: I get into bed at night, close my eyes, and ten minutes later I can't breathe. While I'm working my way through various remedies (drugs, doctors, homebrewed quackery, et cetera), I'd just like to know WHY this invariably happens? What's going on up inside my head?
I am a trans woman. Recently, I received a job offer from a private higher education institution in New York City. I would really like to accept the job, but repeated conversations with the individual who recruited me—who has been asking questions on my behalf to the institution's Human Resources department—have left me unsure whether or not their health insurance will cover trans-related care. How do I get this information? Can I get this information? [more inside]
I have recently entered a fairly strict diet and workout regimen. I feel like it is healthy, but am worried about the damage I may have done to my body and metabolism. Help me decide on my next steps. [more inside]

I am doing physical therapy exercises at home and need to time reps -- like 10 seconds to hold a stretch, then relax for 5 seconds, repeat 10 times. Another stretch: hold for 30 seconds, relax for 5 seconds, repeat 10 times. What's the best Android app for this? (by "best" I am including simple. I don't need a complicated app for weightlifters that's going to confuse me with all kinds of other information) Cheap = Best
I want to get fit because it would help my health long-term, but exercising more than a gentle walk makes me sick short-term, so I am stuck. I have specific restrictions on what I can do because of stroke risks, and expect to continue to frequently fall ill. I would like new ideas and especially advice from others with chronic illnesses that fluctuate on how they handle exercise. [more inside]

First, YANMD and I know this. Over the last two years, I've lost count of how many doctors and specialists I've seen to try to figure out why I have a weird chronic pain in my arms and legs. They're completely stumped, so I thought I'd query the hive-mind to see if any of you fine folk have either had or heard of a similar condition. Medical details inside. [more inside]

I have had some weird blood test results lately. My doctor is not sure what it's from, but said that worst case scenario would be leukemia. She wants me to see a hematologist but the soonest available appointment is till over a week away. I have always suffered from pretty severe hypochondria/health-anxiety/whatever, and the fact that my doctor mentioned the L word, and the uncertainty and waiting, not to mention the absolute worst timing, is killing me. I can barely work or sleep. [more inside]
Whenever I get the slightest bit sick, I always feel it first in my throat. Having an itchy throat where it hurts to swallow is no fun, and this extended winter we've been having has been no help! I treat it with plenty of water, honey lemon ginger tea, and cough drops, of course, but I'm wondering whether there's anything I can do preemptively to keep my throat from being less vulnerable. If you used to have a tender, wimpy throat that now weathers stress and rapid changes in temperature like a champ, I'd love to hear what you changed (be it food, vitamins, habits, or something else entirely)!
I've been looking to no avail for research into the content of song lyrics re-enforcing ideas like a mantra in the mind. Does anyone know of any research into this? We learn by repetition so one would imagine the brain isn't selective. Brand re-enforcement advertising works this way so lyrical content should too?
I moved to San Francisco 7-8 months ago. Ever since then I have found myself getting sick unusually easily. The illnesses I get tend to have the same set of symptoms: heightened temperature/fever, lack of energy, sniffles, sneezing and this kind of warm sick feeling in my body. They tend to be made worse by stress and are often triggered by working hard on things. (Which is really unfortunate because I want to be working a lot harder on my projects than I am right now!) If you've got any wild guess as to what might be going on, please share it! [more inside]

I'm working on a project at work about "unique or unexpected obsessions" related to technology, competition, health and fitness, animals, hunting, gaming or anything that is non-sexual or substance-related. I'm especially interested in how these so-called obsessions/addictions have impacted the subjects' relationships, careers, finances, etc. Where do I find people with weird yet intense obsessions that affect their everyday lives? I feel like I could use some inspiration, so any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There is no shortage of diets for people who want to lose weight quickly: Atkins, the "Zone" diet, the Vegan diet, the Weight-Watchers diet, the Mediterranean diet, ... But there are countless articles and experts which seem to refute the "evidence" put forth by the creators of such diets. Question is, do you know whether the latest diet advertised by Dr. Oz (the " Garcinia Cambogia" extract-based diet) is safe / do you have any information on it? [more inside]
I'm pretty tolerant to any substances I've tried; alcohol, cannabis, and prescription medication always needed higher than average doses on me to procure any effects. I also sober up pretty fast. Just out of curiosity, what does this mean? Does my body do something well? Do I just have a healthy liver? [more inside]

Asking for a friend: What's a good knee wrap for warmth and support? I've been treated for patella tendonosis. I'm a middle-aged man in Seattle. It doesn't get very cold here, but even below 50 degrees, my knee starts to ache. Looking for a way to keep the knee joint nice and warm, and extra support for the tendon. Thinking of buying this knee wrap. Anyone have first hand (first knee?) experience? You are not my doctor. You are not my physical therapist. My dog will be happier if I can take her for longer walks.
I have been paying $100/mo. for several years now for long-term care insurance with a carrier that is as good a bet as any in the market. But that is a big hit in my budget, and will be even bigger when I retire in a couple of years. It's kind of early in the overall history of this kind of insurance to be drawing conclusions from gathered data, but worst case, it could be just another corporate sleight-of-hand deal for sucking money out of the paycheck-to-paycheck crowd. I can not rely on family as an alternative strategy; I am in fairly good health so far. Should I consider this an essential expense?
I don't know what help I need anymore, or even if I need help. I have a lifelong history of depression and the past two and half years, I've experienced more life stressors than normal. The original reasons I made the appointment was to a. get a new script for my anti-anxiety medication (which is also meant to help my depression), especially as I accidentally abruptly ceased it over 5 days ago, and b. a referral to a new psychiatrist to prescribe ADHD medication. What happens to the drinking water I swallow? All I know is that it goes down my throat to my stomach, and then my body does its thing. Can you go into greater detail for me? For example: What positive effects does the water I drink have on my mouth, my throat, my stomach and other parts of my body? How does the stomach process the water? Where does the water go after my stomach? How does what's in the water get from my stomach to the necessary parts of my body? What's in water that my body needs? What parts of my body benefit the most from the water I drink? Feel free to answer other relevant questions that I've overlooked.
After a year of half-assed solo weight lifting. I've decided to take the green's advice and tie my fitness to a specific activity. I'm thinking of joining a rock climbing/crossfit gym in my area. I am an irregular user of cannabis and complete novice really in such matters but recently when under the influence I felt the need to try and record the experience by writing an email to myself. The following day I awoke to discover a 9 page long list of words (people, places, nouns) and I was both surprised and confused by its content. I am interested in what is taking place within the brain on a molecular basis, and if this list is somehow a reflection of my subconscious or to do with an effect cannabis has on the part of the brain that stores memories?
