My dear friend is battling a serious illness in Louisville, KY. She has two very young children. Hopefully she will be recovered in 3 months. I live far away. I would like to temporarily hire Alice from the Brady Bunch to help her and her husband manage their household chores and help them take care of their children. Barring that, looking for ways to support a young mom from a distance. [more inside]
I am curious to hear from mefites if you could recommend science based articles about diseases associated with indoor air and household products particularly in relation to make occupational hazard based advocacy against routine use of known toxins around children and forced on workers. Okay, that is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek title... I just started doing tech support work in a public school. I know about hand washing and using sanitizer but anyone have any thoughts about additional vaccinations beyond TDP and the annual flu shot? [more inside]
Is CDBC used outside of BC or is there another term for complex developmental and behavioural conditions? [more inside]
I have read articles about herd immunity and I understand the concept. But, boots on the ground, should I worry about my vaccinated son occasionally playing with a partially vaccinated 4-year-old and a completely unvaccinated 2-year-old? We're all pretty mindful of staying away when the children show signs of illness. I am interested in both medical information and how other parents have navigated this potential risk.
I did something colossally stupid this evening: Put up some pasta on the stove and then fell promptly asleep for a little while on the couch. Woke up to a terrible smell of natural gas. Found the water in the pot had spilled over and doused the flame of the burner it was cooking on. With the gas on high. It was probably like that for about 10 minutes or so. And now, four hours later, the house still has a strong-ish odor. Here is my question: does the smell indicate that gas is still present in the house, and if so, should I be concerned for the health and safety of my small children, who are sleeping a hallway away from the kitchen? I'm a dad and my oldest - now a pre-teen, who this year started at high school - is always tired and hates exercise. She was very active when she was younger but pressures of long school hours and homework have squeezed all that out of the calendar. Plus of course she's the age when children's bodies dramatically change size and shape and that's perfectly normal. Given all that, what's the best way I can help her to stay as fit and healthy as possible? What has helped for your kids? [more inside]

Describe your experience traveling semi-adventurously (developing country, language barriers, etc) with a very small infant, like a few weeks old small. Specifically concerned with health and safety issues but also comfort and parental sanity. [more inside]
So, my 4year old can;t blow her nose. Any amount of explaining how to blow your nose does not seem to help her, though TBH I am not sure I am doing a good job as is it's difficult to describe it more than "just blow out through your nose". Is this something that can be taught? When do people usually figure it out?
I'm going to be visiting New Orleans with my kids. We try to go every year and this trip we'll be staying around a month. I'd like to have a regular doctor or medical practice so that I don't need to visit a hospital emergency room for something minor. We have travel insurance, and most of our party will be US citizens.
My 3-year-old may or may not have eaten dental floss. What, if anything, should I do? [more inside]

I want to do the responsible thing and buy my children health insurance when our COBRA policy expires this month. I am being told that this is simply not possible due to the "unforeseen consequences" of healthcare reform going into effect 9/23/2010. Surely I'm missing something. Can someone explain what's going on and what I can do before they go uninsured 10/1? [more inside]
Aetna recently contacted my parents saying that because they provide less than 50% of my financial support, I am no longer eligible to be a dependent on the family health insurance plan. However, the new legislation passed by Congress seems to say that I can stay on the plan until I am 26. Can anyone clear up this confusion? [more inside]

My daughter just had my grand daughter. The entire process was amazing and I haven't fallen in love this hard in nearly 20 years. (when my daughter was born) She has decided for the health and benefits of the baby to nurse. I nursed and I remember how hard it is the first 2 weeks. A great deal has changed and I was wondering if anyone had any practical advice on how to get through the rough beginning of nursing an infant with a barracuda grip. Are there any products, herbal remedies etc...
Should I be encouraging my 9 year old son to retract his foreskin? Is cortisone cream to thin the skin, prescribed by his original pediatrician, a good idea? [more inside]
At 8 am this morning my five year old son was fine. At noon he had a temperature of 40.4 C (104.7 F). By 4:30 his temp was normal again. This is the fourth time in the last two weeks he's had a high fever (over 39) that lasts for only a few hours . What's up? [more inside]

My wife and I are traveling out of the country, and our 2 year old twins will be staying with my parents for the duration of the trip. We plan to be gone for 10 days. I need some good, solid information about child vaccines. Everything I read either smacks of propaganda (the anti-vaccine side) or is cheerfully oversimplified (the pro-vaccine side). Is there a moderate, objective book or website that addresses the claims of both sides? [more inside]

fff asked a really good question about how children think. Many responders wrote that they have no memories from their childhoods. This freaks me out. I remember my childhood more vividly than my college years. I have a childhood friend who also has no memories from when she was a kid, which is really odd, because I remember all sorts of things we did together. Have there been any studies that shed light over why some people can recall their childhoods and others can't?
