So last week I explained that I was having an emotional crisis and asked for some help with decision making. It turns out that I was not having an emotional crisis and was actually having extremely dangerous heart arrhythmias that often lead to sudden cardiac arrest. (Supposedly, certain heart conditions and rhythms can be accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and impending doom.) Now I am alone in a hospital and am facing an uncertain future. [more inside]
I just turned 40 and am a father of two young boys (a two-year old and newborn). What are things I can do to take care of myself to ensure that I have the energy needed to be an active and energetic dad for my boys as they get older? I'm thinking largely physical, but mental tips would be great too. [more inside]

I had a Health flexible spending account for the first time this year and I have 2 weeks left to spend the rest of the money or I lose it - $355 to be exact. I could buy lots of pair of reading glasses but am looking for recommendations of other items that are covered for FSA that I might not be aware of. Thanks!
I’m going to start going to the gym again and I’m looking for hacks on how to simplify this and integrate it into my routine. Married, no kids, one dog, Mon-Fri 9-5 job. One location of this gym is 10 minutes away from home; a couple locations are on the way to work. I’m looking for advice on things to do, think, change, or even buy that will help me remove any friction in getting to the gym on a regular basis. I want to build motivating, long-term habits--what helps you?
I know this isn't a psych forum, but you all are a very bright and insightful group and I tend to see worst-case scenarios elsewhere on the web. So my question to you is, have any of you weaned off of an antispychotic, such as Latuda or any other atypical? Of course I would only do it under a doc's care and would take quite awhile doing it but I'm curious to hear other experiences and input. Also, if you did, how long were you taking meds for and were they high or low doses? [more inside]
If two people walk into a facility for an MRI, one with health insurance, one without, will they be charged the same? Assume both are paying out of pocket because insured person has a high deductible. Does insured person still get a better rate? Or does it vary? Hoping someone with knowledge of medical pricing/billing can answer this.

Say that six people share two shower booths, since there are 14 students per floor, where two are in suites, thus leaving twelve people per gender to use two bathrooms equipped with two shower booths each. Also assume that the shower booths are cleaned using bleach-soaked mops every day at 2 pm. Finally assume that you take showers late in the evening and early in the morning. Under this assumption, if you go barefoot into those shower booths, is this okay?

Our increasingly elderly father has survived another health crisis, but is going to need more care than we can afford or provide. Difficulty level: he's an ex-pat on the other side of the world, but wants his kid(s) to take care of him. Wall of text and some Whiskey Tango Foxtrot-ness inside. [more inside]
REM sleep behavior disorder. I've discussed it with my GP, psychologist and neurologist and we're fairly convinced I have it. Thrown myself out of bed twice in the last year, giving me a lovely new scar on my neck. Too many episodes of thrashing and kicking. Many, many episodes of talking. The last objectively confirmed by family while we were recently on holiday and thus in closer sleeping arrangements. [more inside]
For a project at work, I'd like to know more about what happens at HIV+ diagnosis in settings where the patient isn't connected with a case manager (or peer navigator, linkage coordinator, or similar). E.g., at ER's, public health clinics, and any other diagnosis settings where connection to a case manager or similar isn't routine, what happens? Can you fill me in, or suggest how I can find out? Hello metafilter, A few months back, I had a break-up with a friend. At the time, I believed we were very close, and I turned to her because I was very sick, needed help, and couldn't find it anywhere else. Instead of offering help or sympathy, she instead sent me a "go away till you're better" letter two days later. It's broken my heart, and I can't seem to move past it. [more inside]

A week ago I suddenly became ill, apparently with some sort of virus. Symptoms included sore throat, general feeling of being dazed, inability to concentrate, queasiness of stomach (did not vomit, but almost did), lack of appetite, and sinus congestion. I went to the doctor, who gave me some meds to combat the symptoms. However, the fatigue has not gone away and may even be getting worse. Should I go back to the doctor, or should I just suck it up and try to push through my responsibilities, delaying a doctor's appointment until perhaps if the fatigue continues for another week? I'm looking for recommendations for a TENS unit, and the last question from AskMe is from '05. My PT recommended it to reduce inflammation and get fluid moving in my legs. I'm not sure where to start. They range in price from $20 to $80 and I have no idea how to evaluate the specs or what to look for. I'd like to make an informed choice. Any recommendations for specific brands or units are welcome, as are any tips for choosing one. TIA!

Hello. Thank you in advance for your help. I have had Kaiser insurance for many years for me and my son. I have been on auto-pay and I guess my auto pay expired and I never re signed up for auto pay so my insurance was canceled. Totally my fault, I get it. I suspect they sent me a million letters but I tend to throw mail away in a haste and probably thought it was junk or just a THIS IS NOT A BILL statement thing. But now what? [more inside]

I'll try to keep this brief. I will likely be moving to Southern-Europe and will need to form new relationships with new doctors. Now, what from what I've been advised - they told me they want everything since I have multiple issues (PTSD from war, Anxiety over loud bangs/sounds, fireworks, Phobia of small places..) had a couple of MRIs after my car being rear-ended as well. So is it as simple (I like in Mass) as emailing/calling them and asking me to send me all my records? I don't even know what records holds. Is it what things they diagnosed me with, blood results, my medication, my MRI results. Stuff like that? Does it cost anything? Any help is extremely appreciated. Thank you all!
Interested in hearing from 1) adults who have suffered from mental health issues for most/major part of their lives (depression/schizophrenia in particular) and were persuaded* by family to seek help (aka go to a psychiatrist). 2) family of the adult who was suffering from mental health issues and recognised that something was off/not quite right/blatantly bizarre/had classic symptoms of mental health issues (isolation, hygiene, job loss, distorted thinking and more). Additional twist- the adult in question can't stand immediate family and is convinced they are "toxic". [more inside]
My dear friend is battling a serious illness in Louisville, KY. She has two very young children. Hopefully she will be recovered in 3 months. I live far away. Barring that, looking for ways to support a young mom from a distance. [more inside]

I am a woman in my late 30s and I have quite a bit of weight to lose. I am ready to really make a commitment to some changes, but as an extremely busy professional and new mother I don't feel like I can do this alone. I am looking for an online health/weight-loss coach who will help me make incremental changes and stick to them over the course of a year to lose about 50 pounds. I'm willing to pay generously for this. Where should I look? How do I find this? [more inside]
