I've been thinking about building this little Altoid tin headphone amp kit
for listening with my Sennheiser 555s.
Granted, the point of building the kit is, well, building the kit--but given the limitations of a (cheap) kit-built design and the fact that I listen exclusively to mp3s on my iPhone or Mac, will there be a perceptible improvement in sound from the cans? Is there more to the sound of my mp3s that I might not be hearing just driving the Sennheisers with the juice from the iPhone's or Mac's headphone jack that would merit stepping up the signal with the little amp?

I work in a data center, and when amongst the racks the noise is pretty tremendous - gotta lean in towards the person you're talking to just to hear them, ear plugs are a must for any long-term work if you don't have other coverage. So I'm looking for good headphones in the 100-150 dollar range that have either active or very effective passive noise cancellation/reduction. The restriction - no earbuds, I hate 'em. Over-ear cans are the way to go. The Sennheiser 280 is a classic standby, but I can't find any specifics on how much white-noise type sound they block. The 429/439s look pretty swank as well, but once again, can't find any details beyond nebulous claims of 'sound isolation'. Anyone in a similar noise environment have recommendations?

I have some Sennheisers. They're nice, but not enough. I want wireless around-ear
headphones with active noise cancellation
. They should be extremely comfortable
. The pair of headphones should have a long battery life
, good sound
, and an easy-to-use charger station
that I can just set the headphones down on at the end of the day. It should be portable
in my messenger bag. If it cannot both be good and portable, then it doesn't need to be portable. I have a Mac, which it needs to work with
, and a Ubuntu desktop (with Bluetooth) I would like it to work with. I would like to spend anywhere from $100-$500 on this. I'm willing to wait a few months if something new and awesome is coming out, but probably not longer than that.

I'm looking for new headphones or earbuds. Sound quality isn't that important.
Long-term comfort and build quality are. [more inside]

Audiophilia-on-a-budget advice needed: I want to upgrade my desktop listening experience for around $200 or less. Currently reasonably happy using Sennheiser HD-280 plugged straight into my Mac Pro, but borrowing a friend's Total BitHead has inspired me to look further. [more inside]

I'm looking for recommendations on great over-ear headphones I can use with my iPhone. I've been using Klipsch earbuds, but they don't stay in my ear that well, and I'm concerned about hearing loss, so I'd like to keep a small distance from my sound source.
I've seen in previous questions that the Sennheiser HD-280 and Sony MDR-V6 have been recommended for general use. I'm not sure about the viability of a hugely long cord for using these while walking around, however, nor do I know if the iPhone could drive these cans. I'm looking for accurate sound reproduction (no pumped-up bass, please) and comfortable wear. I'll be using them both outside and indoors, but they don't need to be sound-canceling.

Which headphones should I get for a long (14 hours) flight with kids? I want ones that are comfortable on a large head and are easy to remove, because I'll need to get up frequently. I looked at noise-cancelling headphones on Amazon, but the ones that sounded best for me (Sennheiser PXC 450
) are too expensive for something I'll use infrequently.
On previous trips I've used earplugs to deaden the ambient noise and just turned the volume up on my (airline-supplied) headphones, but there must be a better way.
