I'm using Terminal (Ubuntu 8.04x64) right now to overwrite a 500g external hd with random information. There's been no action aside from a blinking cursor (by itself on a line, not in front of any prompt) since I entered the command yesterday afternoon:
[sudo dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sdc bs=8m]

I understand it's going to take a while to finish. In the meantime, is there any way to monitor the progress of the operation?

I'd like to put a larger HD in my MacBook, but I can find any reference to the max size I can put in it. I have an Intel Core Duo MacBook (2GHz). I purchased it around Sept. 2006. The stock 60GB HD is full. I saw a recommendation for a Seagate Momentus 160GB at 7200rpm. Can I go above 160GB? Is there a max that this laptop can handle? I'm leaning towards 7200rpm for better performance, but will this impact battery life??

i lost a partition in a reformat, but the data is still on my harddrive. i want to get the data off. i have r-studio, but not enough disk space on the existing partition to put the other data on it, and i thought i shouldn't create a new partition to put the data on, as that could mess up remaining data. i don't have an external harddrive. is there any way i can safely get the data off? thanks! Another boooooring computer question - sorry!

How do I clone a HD in a win2k system? My system's boot hd is a 20g 5400 rpm. I'd like to swap it for a 20 g 7200 rpm which is sitting at the moment in an external firewire enclosure. I also have 150g in an internal RAID array.

I backed up my /library/webserver/documents folder to a firewire HD. When I dragged it back, the permissions went all kablooey:

drwxr-xr-x 36 root admin 1224 16 Jan 16:58 Documents

sudo chmod 755 Documents does not give groups write privileges.

1. Do I just need to go read a good chmod tutorial, or is something aberrant happening here?

2. Is there any way to apply appropriate permissions recursively?
