I would like to use Apple iMovie to edit footage of piano performances in (at least) 720p resolution, and I am looking for the best camera for a budget of $400-600. I do not want to plug in the video camera and spend hours copying footage to disk and then transcoding before bringing into iMovie, which appears to rule out all Sony cameras (and possibly others?) that record in a format not friendly to iMovie. With that primary restriction in mind
, what is the best video camera/"camcorder" for a budget of $400-600 that works best with iMovie? [more inside]

Why don't we have HD video of Earth rotating in space? You know, relatively close-up, as if the Enterprise had just dropped out of warp and the planet was being majestically introduced to the cinema audience. An extended, multiple pass/rotation exposure, so that it could be watched by appreciative viewers wanting to get a bit of perspective/peace. I imagine I would sit and gaze at this for extended periods. What are the technical limitations which have prevented this?

Looking for a slick way to update the album artwork for a large (>150gb) music library on a PC. The key here is updating to HD
album artwork. My smartphone has a really high res screen and most artwork looks awful on it. What's the easiest, most painless way to do this (for free!

I have a Panasonic Blu-ray player. It is probably 5-6 years old.
Lately I notice the picture quality on some older standard DVDs (Six feet under season 1 for example) don't look good. They either look grainy/pixelated/not crisp.
The other problem that I have is that Blu-rays take foreeeeeeever to load. The new season of Mad Men must take 5 minutes at least. It does look great once it gets started.
I am not an overly tech savvy person. I don't know if I need to update firmware (or how to do it for that matter). I would rather have something that either doesn't require it or does it automatically. I do have a brand new Samsung smart hd tv. I am using HDMI cables.
Is there a way/is it worth updating or trying to "fix" It seems that players are so inexpensive that perhaps I should just purchase a new one. Would this solve the problem? Do todays units update themselves like I believe that my tv does? I see that some come with wi-fi included. Some are smart. I don't know what the advantage to those features are. I don't care about 3D. Is HDMI still the standard?
Would it be advantageous to stick with Samsung?
Thank you in advance

I'm trying to partition the hard drive on my old mac (model 4,1 running OS X 10.5.8) so I can dual boot Ubuntu. The problem is that when I go to Disk Utility and and select to partition the drive I get an error saying that the partition failed because there's no space left on the device, even though I have lots of space. This happens no matter how small I make the partition. [more inside]

Reinstalled Snow Leopard but ejected my external drive before this. Then, when done, plugged back in via USB as my usual custom....and Time Machine still shows up, but the External Seagate drive does not. I made sure that in Finder/Preferences that the external disc box as others was checked. I tried a different cord, and different port. I opened up Disc Utility and the External HD's partioned Time Machine is available but the other part, now renamed something else (a default name from manufacturer?) is greyed out and I cannot touch it.
Any thoughts? Should i now go to the boot disc of Snow Leopard? Not sure why TM shows but the rest does not.

I have a PCI-E SSD as my boot drive, and a win7-created RAID 1 on two 3TB drives. My boot drive has my user folder on it, but my documents, music, pictures, videos, etc folders shortcut to their respectable folders on the RAID. I would like this to be a full redundancy scheme and it is, but I've run into several nags and I would like to know how to fix them and prepare a fix-it plan before any of the drives fails. Is anyone still manufacturing high-end laptops with 1920x1200 (not 1920x1080) screens? I'm looking for a luggable/7.5 to 8 pound size, 17" screen laptop, Ivy Bridge based Core i7 CPU with a serious dedicated GPU and 1920x1200 screen. Everything I can find uses 1920x1080. Battery life is not a concern, this would be used in a role like an occasionally relocated, folding desktop PC.

I would like to keep an offsite backup of certain files (various financial docs, my iTunes library, and some photos)--say, 200 gigs total. I've considered storing them online with Crashplan, but the cost of the unlimited plan for multiple computers (mine and SO's) and the bandwidth to push that data out leave me meh. Thinking of getting another HD and keeping it at work. Can I run something by you? [more inside]

CHALLENGE TIME! You are lent some expensive, professional grade video equipment for 18 hours and told that you may use it as you see fit in the time you have. Assuming little to no preparation beforehand, what do you do and/or film with it? Ideally you'd like the owner (or anyone else who sees your work) to be mildly impressed, knowing that you have no actual solo film making experience whatsoever. [more inside]

I've order a bunch of computer parts from Newegg and am going to build my own computer, hopefully not wrecking anything in the process. (I even picked up an antistatic cuff and mat today, to be safe) Thing is, I'm thinking of adding an 100-120gb SSD to the parts list to go along with the 1TB spinning hard drive.
How do I set up having two hard drives like this, with the OS and other often-used essential programs on the SSD and everything else on the "slow" drive? I'm new at all of this--I don't think I've ever even looked at a BIOS before, let alone assembled a system. [more inside]

I'm looking for the cheapest and/or easiest way to capture and compile segments of certain television news and comedy shows in full HD from a standard set-top box, then export them as a single HD presentation (either as a file or maybe as a Blu-ray disk). Luckily, I'm not starting completely from scratch. I already have MacBook Pro (2010)
Final Cut Studio (the 2006 release I think but certainly not the most current version) and
Adobe Creative Suite CS5 Master Collection
. What more do I need (some type of capture device I assume) and what's the best workflow given the heavy duty software package? This project is NOT intended for any kind of sale or public distribution but instead is part of a school project.
