Somewhat stylish wide-brimmed hats for living on the surface of the sun?

Full-brimmed hats for sun protection of a male mid-30's scalp that aren't lame? Lame defined as fedoras, cowboy hats, 6 dollar buckets, or those floppy Vietnam combat things. I'm out and about a lot in Phoenix and need shade, but just don't know much about hats. Typical uniform is slim knee-length flat-front shorts, collared shirts with sleeves pushed to elbow, slides or espadrilles or white canvas low-tops.

Trying To Find Evidence Of The Wendy's Jazz Cap

I'm looking for a photo of a Wendy's Jazz Cap, or even just first-hand recollections of them. These were apparently some type of multicolored painter's cap sold at Wendy's establishments in the late 80's(possibly 1988ish). There seems to be no trace of their existence online. Phone calls to the Wendy's Customer Service hotline have come back with a "try eBay" response. A few good but ultimately fruitless tries to track one down can be found on the comments to my blog. Any information, photos, or recollections would be very much appreciated.

Help me find a dashing fedora for my dad, since elegance is the privilege of age

I want to get my father a hat for his 70th birthday. No, I don't mean one of those awful narrow-brimmed glen plaid affairs that are about as stylish and becoming as toe rubbers. I’m thinking a wide-brimmed fedora made of a good quality gray felt – something like this, and like what "Jack McCoy" sometimes wears on Law & Order (unfortunately can’t find a picture of Sam Waterston in his fedora). I’ve looked in the malls in Toronto and the only suitable hat I could find was $85 plus tax, which is both rather steep for my gift budget and too much to spend on something I am not convinced my mother and I can coax my dad into wearing;-). Does anyone know where (preferably) in Toronto or (plan B) online I can find a less expensive hat (hopefully not over $50) for Dad Swan?

Find me a hat like Ricky's argyle cap

Where can I get a hat like the argyle cap that Ricky Lizalde wears on Project Runway? It's a kangol-style cap with a black/white/gray argyle pattern. I tried to find a picture of him online, but the one on the Bravo site has him wearing a different hat, and I don't have the technology to take a screencap from my TiVo.

Who the &*^% Goes to the Arctic in the Winter?

I need clothing/gear recommendations for a week in Barrow, Alaska. Arctic Filter: I am about to spend 8 days in Barrow, Alaska, my first trip to the arctic. Current ambient temps up there are around 0-10 degrees, -10 to -20 with wind chill, but can go as low as -30 ambient. It's dark, and mostly dry. But of course snow is a possibility. I'm not going there to hike, and will be mostly indoors, but will occasionally have to travel by snowmobile between remote locations (so figure an hour or two outside), and of course hope to walk a bit beyond town at least once, though not very far given the dark.

OK, so I get to buy decent outdoor gear on my grant budget for this, and I am carrying a lot of recording equipment with me, so traveling as light as possible is a major goal.

I haven't bought serious outdoor wear in a decade, and never for an arctic situation. Again, I don't need it to be full-bore outdoor survival gear, but I'd love recommendations for the lightest possible ways to stay warm and dry while remaining mobile, including specific recs for a) coats, b) boots, c) gloves, d) hats. Thermal underwear and socks as well. Let's say you had $1500-2000 to drop on an outfit for November on the North Slope. What would you buy? What do you own and love for serious winter situations?

Hat smashing movie and tv clips?

Can anyone point me towards movie or tv clips that involve punching someone in the face through a straw boater held up in front of them or any other comedic hat smashing? I've become obsessed with the convention of smashing hats in anger or frustration, so I'm up for all tips on hat-smashing in general. The only things that I've got so far are Apu talking to Homer's spy-camera cowboy hat and Harvey Kneeslapper from Sesame Street, keeping an "I" on someones hat. Smashy smashy!

What do you call this kind of hat, and this way of dressing?

What is this kind of hat called, and what was the "look" that went with it called? Sort of a leather version of a Greek fisherman's cap, sort of reminiscent of SS uniforms. I can remember seeing them worn in the 1970s and 1980s by gay leathermen, gay and straight people at punk shows in Europe, maybe some bikers, too. Prompted by this post in the blue. You can see a small group of guys wearing the hats surrounding the singer at about minute 2:00 in the video here.

So I've always wondered: what are those hats called? Was there a specific term for the look that often went with it, both for men and for women, which I recall as incorporating elements of punk, nazi, biker, and other subculture fashion?

Bonus points for pointing me to a good set of photographs, online or in a book, documenting that scene at the time. It was a look that made a big impact on me as a young wanna-be punk rocker in the early 1980s, but I was always too wussy to actually talk to people I found so intimidating as a 14 year old. I wouldn't be intimidated now, but I never see them anymore.

Did my friend dream this music video?

Yet another "help me find this music video" question. The Magnetic Fields? In front of a house? Hats? My friend has been desperately trying to find a music video she saw on TV within the last year or so. It was probably a Magnetic Fields song, possibly with words along the lines of "in front of a house" in the title or lyrics, and the video consisted of clips of people putting on and taking off hats. Does this ring any bells?

Do they still make adjustable baseball caps?

I'm looking to buy a new baseball cap, but I hate fitted ones. Everywhere I look I find only fitted hats, or those adjustable ones with the cloth strip and brass lock. I don't want those either. I just want an old-fashioned baseball cap with plastic snaps and holes. I don't want to use Ebay or scour thrift stores. Any advice on where I can look?
The Thing That Covers Your Head if You're Harvesting Rice

OtherPeoples'HatsFilter. I have to describe an illustration from the 1940s in which the "Asian" (nationality unspecified) character is wearing the kind of conical peaked hat usually seen on traditionally dressed Vietnamese peasants. I know that in the past these hats were referred to as "Saipan hats" or, more offensively, "Saipan coolie hats." Is there a more anthropologically correct and culturally accurate term for them?

Thanks for any and all insight on this one.

I am looking for a special kind of hat, preferably in the Portland area. Since it has been sunny lately and I have been working outside I realized I needed a hat, not just any straw hat, one of these (modeled by Mike Watt)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tacohose/174989419/.
I went to REI as I have seen that style in a Outdoor Research brand but to no avail. Ebay has them but I would prefer to try it on first, hence the Portland area request.
Castro Hat Variant?

Please help me identify my lost hat , and where I might be able to acquire a new one. I lost this hat (pic2, pic3) a while ago. I wasn't too phased at the time, since I purchased it at a Wal-Mart and expected to be able to easily find another one. However, my searches in store and online have been to no avail. It looks sort of like a Castro hat as previously asked about here, but has three rings of fabric on the front face of the crown. I remember that the tag inside had a red, white, and blue emblem on it, but my memory tells me that it probably wasn't made in the United States.

I'm going to be doing some outdoor travelling in Europe this summer, and I'd like to wear a hat for protection from the sun (my hair is thinning, sad to say). Are there any recommendations for hats for men that A) look good B) are not baseball caps C) won't make me look like a mountaineer? Most of my wardrobe will be relatively casual: button-down short-sleeved shirts, maybe some sturdy t-shirts, lightweight khakis and shorts. I mostly dress in earth tones. I live in the SF bay area, if that helps.

Fashion consultation needed for timid, unstylish 74 y.o. woman with severe hair loss (more inside)

Are there any places in New York City or Westchester County that can provide help with hats, scarves, hairpieces etc for an elderly woman with alopecia? It's genetic, not caused by chemotherapy. My Mom is extremely self-conscious about her hair loss and always wears a bandanna or kerchief to cover her head (tied in back, like you'd wear for painting the house). The problem is, she's embarassed to go anyplace nice in a bandanna and she's too timid to find a new "look" by herself. My parents' 50th anniversary is coming up and Dad wants to go to a really nice restaurant to celebrate. Is there any place that can help Mom find a nice-looking way to hide her hair loss?

Ideally, such a place would be private, supportive, and have a supply of hats and scarves on hand to play around with. No way would Mom ever go to a store and try on hats in public! Also, the consultant should be able to deal with clients who are both timid and resistant to change. Mom has worn a bandanna every day for at least 10 years and anything else looks wrong to her, but if a believable authority tells her "You look good in that style", she might accept something new. Books, websites and other DIY approahces won't work for the same reason - she needs someone to reassure her she looks good in a new style, and she won't believe Dad.

Identify head gear in this work of art

Can anyone identify either the name, or the purpose of a piece of headwear in this pastel by symbolist artist Lucien Levy Dhurmer? The artwork in question can be viewed here. I think it was just the fashion at the time. I would appreciate the name of this type of headgear, it looks faintly medical but I'm not sure.
