Hate - ignore, avoid, stay apathetic, help!

So, there's someone who has been a real absolutely mean apathetic narcissistic jerk of all jerks with my husband and me (mostly, me). It is a close relative. We can't ignore them (too close), we can't avoid them, and when they visit they take over our lives for a couple of months every few years (2-3? if we're lucky). I have never hated anyone as much. How do I not let it influence me? [more inside]

Are there organisations in the UK to help people escape hate groups?

EXIT-Germany did a famous stunt that turned a Neo-Nazi march into a fundraiser for their organisation, which helps Neo-Nazis get out of that life. Are there groups in the United Kingdom who can help people move on from hate groups? What about the US? [more inside]

Help me fall back in love with my job, or do something else?

I'm an artist with a terrific day job: it's super flexible, doing admin work for a non-profit that actually has a great mission which it executes effectively, it gives me time to do my art. Pay's decent-not-great, but an excellent trade-off for the quality of life I get. But after four years I have started to hate it. [more inside]

Help me not hate weekends

I hate weekends. It's a struggle to get myself to leave the house on Saturdays and Sundays; I just want to hide under a blanket all day. Work is different; I looooove going to work Monday through Friday, and I love work in general. What do you do to get yourself out and about, or otherwise excited about weekends? [more inside]

How can my fiancee translate her work in human rights law from UK->US?

My fiancee is planning to move to Chicago at some point later this year--if all goes well with our engagement, of course ;). She has a GDL (law conversion) degree (in addition to non-law undergrad and postgrad degrees) from the UK and is looking for advice, first and foremost, on the "lay of the land" and things to keep in mind in transferring environments. Help me resolve fear about trying to have a creative career.

I am interested in working on a publishing/performing career (think the sort of thing you see on The Moth). However, I am female. I am aware that all women if they get well known anywhere will immediately attract trolls, stalkers, and potential rapists who will constantly send her death threats at bare minimum. Knowing this kind of thing is guaranteed to happen to me if I try to have a creative career makes me terrified to try. [more inside]

Collected vitriol, like this collection of hate for comedian Stewart Lee

I find this collection of online critiques of Stewart Lee extremely funny (On Lee's own website). They range from 2 word comments like 'Sneering Tosser' to far longer considered treatises on why he is unfunny. Many of the longer comments are very reasoned but punctuated with hateful sentences like 'The c***.' Youtube of him reading some of the comments himself. The expressions of hate he inspires are hilarious to me. The range of techniques and expressions people use to convey their disgust and the sheer level of contempt and disdain is really funny. I am looking for similar large collections of insults ideally directed at specific individuals, famous or otherwise. I am not interested in generic insults. For the record I don't find Lee objectionable or particularly funny for that matter.

A study which shows that people unite against a common enemy?

Over on reddit, a commenter said that they once read a "social science study" which showed that people are more likely to rally in support of a cause when there's a common enemy to hate. It supposedly showed how when people were given the opportunity to unite and campaign for a positive cause, they showed little interest; but that the presence of a hostil opponent motivated the group to unite and rally against it. Can anyone think of a study along those lines?

Literature to mediate on the scum of the earth

I have been trying to deal with the shadows, or dark reality, of life: sex-trafficking, war crimes, war rape, rape, hatred, familial abuse, child pornography; even the "lighter" shadows of infidelity, corruption (of the 3rd World and 1st World), hard drug use and dealing of financial elites, etc.; and perhaps maybe even more importantly: the lack of public-moral outrage that would seek to eradicate such an infestation (strong words, sure - I don't mean to imply I want a 21st century witch hunt). "Hate... you only hurt yourself." Boom!

Searching for info or video of a 1960s-1970s animated US-televised public service announcement against 'hate.' Angry man approaches viewer, head swells and three-pronged arrows whirl in his heart. Head swells and turns red and bursts as narrator says '[when you] hate, you only hurt yourself.' Possibly American Heart Association? Will donate $10 to charity chosen by first person to point me to correct online video. Many thanks.
