I need a cute, warm, women's winter hat. I look kind of like Julia Stiles*, but with an even rounder face. Which makes it hard to find hats that look flattering at all. Also, I have limp, long, straight hair that tends to get flyaways in the winter, so I'm adverse to polyester materials in hats. Something wool on the outside with silk on the inside would be a dream come true. Also, my ears tend to get cold, so I'd love a hat that covered them. Any ideas? I have tried on tons of hats and have never liked any of them.

*If you like how Julia Stiles you might think I'm bragging, but I favor the exotic brunette look, so I'm really not. She's just the celebrity I'm always told I look like, for better or worse.

Where (in Toronto) can I find a warm winter hat suitable for myself: a big-headed person? Please tell me where in Toronto I can find a warm hat that will fit me. Bonus points if it fully covers my ears.

To give you an idea of the size of my head: I can force normal (e.g. from Roots) hats on but they are tight and pull my eyebrows up, making me look perpetually surprised. While good for a chuckle, it does nothing to keep me warm.

I would love to know specific stores and locations where I can shop. I am female but "unisex" styles are fine.

I am very concerned about size/warmth, medium-level concerned about fashion and low-level concern about price.

Can you help me find the perfect non-wool, in-no-way-scratchy winter hat for moderateish activity (male recipient)? Hello!

I am looking for suggestions for a winter hat for the boyfriend, who is a special redheaded snowflake and thus has ridiculously sensitive skin. This would be used for x-country skiing/running in quite cold temperatures (0F-20F) and activities like snowshoeing in more moderate temperatures (15F-40F).

These are the type of temperature/activity combinations that normal people, including myself, would just use a nice Smartwool beanie for. I have failed miserably at this project so far for oh-my-god-really?-THAT-itches?-HOW? reasons so far.

Assume that I do not sew/knit/craft, and that no one I know well enough to ask for a favor does either.

Relevant desired qualities:

-non-cotton or other soggy material, since said activities can get fairly sweaty/snowy

-includes no wool, not even Smartwool/the finest merino wool from tiny fleecy perfect soft newborn lambs lovingly fed organic grain by hand, not even if lined with another material

-includes no materials that could even remotely be categorized as "scratchy"

-stretchy material, or hat available in larger sizes, so it doesn't feel claustrophobic or cling to the head too much

-very basic pattern or solid colors in some manly variation, nothing too crazy or bright or pink

-easy and hopefully non-exorbitant shipping to the US, specifically Alaska

-bonus points for ear coverage of some kind, but not totally necessary since he can always supplement with ear bags

I want my halloween costume to be (primarily but not exclusively) an elaborate hat, and I want to make it. I have two and a half weeks, and somewhere between $25-$45 to devote to things to put on the base hat (I have a free and/or inexpensive source for various kinds of hats, and so am not factoring that into my expenses). I want it to be clever, to be ridiculous like Marie Antoinette and her wigs, and I want it to be something I can wear all night. What should I do? My original Halloween costume idea was go go as North by Northwest: I would get a gray suit, a black tie that I'd make to look like it was flapping in the wind with some wire, and I'd attach an airplane to my shoulder. But I'm a woman and don't look good in men's clothes, and the airplane would almost certainly get in the way, so I'm going the outrageous hat route instead.

Where in Boston can I buy my father a wide-brimmed hat to hike in? The old man's birthday is this coming weekend and I would love to buy him a hat he can hike in and wear in town afterward.

I've looked at Stetson a bit, but think I would like something a bit less cowboy. If possible, I would also like to limit myself to things that don't scream 'hiking gear' such as neon colors or funky construction/materials. I'm hoping to buy in Boston this week, so I would only go online if it's a far superior choice.

HatFilter: I'm looking for a functional, stylish hat for sailing (worried mostly about sun not foul weather protection). Bonus points for a unique, "adventure" flavor like Indiana Jones. Hat Notes:
-Function comes before style: comfortable and good sun protection with out getting in the way are key.
-Something with a unique look. If possible a quasi formal, rugged "adventure" look a la Indiana Jones's Fedora.
-It does not need to be an according-to-Ahab traditional, "salty" hat, but it should look at home and function well on the water (and maybe an exotic tropical port of call, if I am ever so lucky).
-At the same time, something that will not look too out of place. I occasionally sail with a swimsuit, an old tee-shirt and sunglasses so too "formal" may look strange. Basically-Unique but not outlandish.
-I intend to wear it sailing in fresh and salt water (should it matter)
-Cost is a factor, I don't want to spend a fortune for it, but if the hat is well made and the last hat I ever need I am willing to spring for a bit. (at the same time, I expect this hat will get really beaten up, or possibly lost at sea... ahh compromises)

PS- I do already own a nice fur felt "Indiana Jones" Fedora. I would wear it but it feels like it would be too heavy for actual extended use in the heat... plus I am afraid to lose it or get it wet. Indy got his drenched and beaten up many times, but I don't have 12 identical replacements and a film crew to make mine look ready for action in the next frame should something happen :)

What kind of hat should I wear? I'm tired of baseball hats, and I'd like to start wearing a new kind of hat. I'm looking for something stylish that won't make me look like a hipster doofus. I would mostly wear it while out and about with friends. Throw me some ideas.

I saw a hat a liked recently. It was shaped sort of like this, and it had a signature on the side. Any ideas what brand that would be?

I used to have a brown UPS drives hat. It was the old style with the plastic buckle. It was given to me in 1998 or so by a UPS driver that I randomly asked if he knew where I could get a hat from. I was doing a school project where I wore a different style of hat every week for the entire school year. Anyway. At some point I lost the hat. I would like to get another one. Anyone know where I can get it, or just really sturdy hats with the nice plastic snap buckles any more? The ones with the holes and pegs in them. I had asked a friend that worked at UPS a few years back if he could get me one, but he said that after 911, they tightened control of that (not sure if its true or not).
So any information would be helpful.

I've occasionally seen police (or military personnel) wearing hats in such a way that the chin strap is hooked under the lower lip rather than the chin. Why? This is something I've seen in many places throughout my life, and it makes no immediate sense. I found the practice mentioned in a news article here. And then today during some aimless browsing I spotted this example from an old photograph.

So where does this custom come from? What is the practical purpose?

What hat brand makes great warm-weather hats in the style of kangol's ventair/504 cap or even a beret? Obviously, Kangol does, right? Well, I've had bad luck with the logo embroidery on my Kangols disintegrating with normal wear so I'm kinda soured on them for durability reasons. If I'm gonna wear something with a label and pretend I'm cool with my backwards hat, I'd rather it not fall apart and plunge me into even deeper humiliation.

So what Kangol competitors offer similar style warm-weather hats and berets?

I need a hat for exercising outside in the sun, in Texas. I like to exercise outside. I jog, walk, sometimes sprint, and try to vary my routine with jumping rope, doing lunges around the block, or whatever else I can think of. In other words, I move around a lot.

I currently use my trusty baseball cap, but I get ~~age spots~~ freckles on my cheekbones and my ears get sunburned. I have tried various brands of sunscreen but I either sweat it off too quickly or it makes me break out.

Can you recommend a hat that stays on, provides coverage, and doesn't look too dorky? Extra bonus points if you have sensitive skin and can recommend a sunblock too.

WWGPS? (Where Would Gram Parsons shop) I'm looking to buy some clothes, hat and etc. in the "alt country" or "indie country" style, whatever you want to call it. Stuff like this and this, or like some of the men's fashions shown here. I am not so much into tank tops, but I like the hats, maybe the boots, and country style in general, as well as the kind of "earth tones/elbow-patches" look in the first two jpegs.

So, where can I buy stuff like this in the greater L.A. area, either thrift or new?

MadHatterFilter: Will I ever get to have a fedora without looking like a dork? I'm a hat guy, been such since a little tyke. I have a great Panama, a couple of Akubra's, a small mountain of ball caps, hiking hats, rain hats, you name it.

But no fedora. At least, not since I was six.

Now that I've crossed the 50 mark I'm starting to wonder if I can pull off the fedora without seeming like its an affectation? I'm not a kid in drama club trying to act all Brat Pack. I be all growed up now (on the outside).

So, what's the hive opinion? Are fedoras only for the dorks and great-grandpa's? Or can they be worn by a guy who loves hats?

Where does one find quality hats online? I am looking to buy my grandfather a homburg hat as made famous by Winston Churchill, and to a lesser degree The Godfather movies and Tupac. As with most Google searches way too many online hat stores popped up and it is difficult to separate quality from quantity. I'd like to get some opinions on finer hat makers and where to buy from them.

Found: 100% acrylic (super cute, made in USA) winter hat on the (mostly abandoned) street in 20ºF weather (on New Year's Day). I washed it. Can I wear it? Not to be a cootie phobe, but do you think it's safe to wear now? My thoughts were that the cold probably killed any cooties, and then I washed it, but I wanted to check with the more experienced hatted hive mind just in case.

So, in high school, I found this website that sold custom-made fur hats. The hats were cat-eared and could be made with a ribbon strap under the chin. The fur-fabrics you could choose from were kawaii-style: neon colors, loud patterns, etc. I want to buy one of these hats now as a Christmas present, but can't find the site. Does anyone know the site, or have a similar site to suggest?
