Hardwood floors: What could leave spots of bare wood?

We are finding bare spots on our hardwood floor, (i.e. apparently missing the polyurethane sealant). We have found spots in the middle of the floor (away from windows) in a few locations (images here). The wood looks bare. The edges of the spots missing the polyurethane are crisp. I do not believe this is water damage. It doesn't appear to have "bubbled up" characteristic of the water damage that I've seen. [more inside]

Best no-scratch solution for wood floors?

I'm getting brand new hard wood floors shortly, and I want to avoid the horrible chair scratching that plagued my last floor. I've tried simple felt pads and plastic nail-in pads, but neither worked particularly well. Can you suggest some protection for my chairs, or is this is a lost cause?

Rugs and hardwood floors--overthinking it?

We had the hardwood floors in our home refinished in October. Two coats of Swedish finish. We're about to put area rugs down. I know that by now the finish has cured. Should I use a pad under the area rugs? If so, is there any particular kind you would recommend and why? [more inside]

Moist mop mishaps

Please help me fix my hardwood (rental) floor! I left a barely-damp mop on a hardwood floor for a couple of days and it left a stain. Contrary to other, previous AskMes, this stain is light/white, and looks like tiny little bubbles. I believe there is a polyurethane finish, so I'm guessing the moisture got under the finish and caused it to blister a bit. Rubbing with hardwood floor cleaner hasn't helped. What will? [more inside]

Solid Bamboo Flooring Install Tips?

Anyone have tips for installing "hardwood" (solid, not interlocking) bamboo flooring? ...using the "manual" (no air compressor) cleat nailer? Non-slip finish for hardwood floors?

My wife and I are looking at buying a new house which has all hardwood floors. (Nice!) However, when we were at the house for a showing, we noticed that the floors had a glossy finish that was noticeably slippery even with our sneakers on, and this on a perfectly dry day with no water on our shoes or the floor. We would like it to not be slippery. [more inside]

I just refinished a hardwood floor. How to speed up the drying process?

I used Minwax polyurethane (oil-based) to refinish a hardwood floor. It's been a day and still is a bit tacky. I understand that I should wait until the floor completely dries to move furniture back in, but I don't have anywhere else comfortable to sleep and I am getting antsy (it is my bedroom/workroom!) Any ways to speed up the drying process? Maybe I could use an electric ceramic heater - or is that dangerous? Or maybe a fan? How stupid of an idea would it be to move some of the furniture back in (in particularly my workstation) approximately 24 hours after the finish has been applied? [more inside]

Part of hardwood flooring is damaged. How to fix it or who to call?

I have hardwood flooring. Part of it got messed up by dye leaking into it, another part seems to have dark stains that I think may have been caused by drink spillage. I need to fix it ASAP. Peroxide for Urine Stain on Hardwood Floors?

I am renting a house with nice, very old wooden floors, and I just discovered a 20" square dog-urine stain under a box I had on the floor. For some reason, it never smelled until I moved the box, so it may have been there for a long time. It has clearly soaked the wood. I'm extremely embarrassed. What are my options? I've read an earlier askme post where the conclusions are basically that replacing the floorboards is the only option. But it might have only been there for a day - is there anything I can try first, in case I can clean it up myself before it turns into a huge expense? I've done a bit of searching and found some testimonials about covering with hydrogen peroxide soaked rags. Is that worth a try?

Any way to get grout residue off of hardwood?

Any tips for getting grout residue off of hardwood floors? Some previous owners of my house had carpeting in the living room, and tiles that they placed around the fireplace hearth (tiles were 1/4" thick and brick-like, in case anyone cares). I removed the carpet and the tiles to reveal the hardwood floors underneath, which is in fairly good shape in most areas. Except right around the fireplace where some white residue remains from where the tiles were. Is there anyway to reduce or remove this completely other than refinishing? Or should I just put an area rug over it until that time comes? [more inside]

In search of custom cut hardwood

Are there any good lumber suppliers that can provide hardwoods (maple, cherry, etc) cut to specific widths, lengths and depth and ship the cut wood within the US? The reason for the specific dimensions is that I use a service called Ponoko (Ponoko.com) for the initial laser cutting of my art. They currently can only accept three generic sizes in their laser-cutting machines with a maximum depth of 10mm (roughly 3/8"). I've contacted a number of hardwood suppliers but none of them can supply widths of 15+ inches. [more inside]
