I'm trying to partition the hard drive on my old mac (model 4,1 running OS X 10.5.8) so I can dual boot Ubuntu. The problem is that when I go to Disk Utility and and select to partition the drive I get an error saying that the partition failed because there's no space left on the device, even though I have lots of space. This happens no matter how small I make the partition. [more inside]

Reinstalled Snow Leopard but ejected my external drive before this. Then, when done, plugged back in via USB as my usual custom....and Time Machine still shows up, but the External Seagate drive does not. I made sure that in Finder/Preferences that the external disc box as others was checked. I tried a different cord, and different port. I opened up Disc Utility and the External HD's partioned Time Machine is available but the other part, now renamed something else (a default name from manufacturer?) is greyed out and I cannot touch it.
Any thoughts? Should i now go to the boot disc of Snow Leopard? Not sure why TM shows but the rest does not.

I have a PCI-E SSD as my boot drive, and a win7-created RAID 1 on two 3TB drives. My boot drive has my user folder on it, but my documents, music, pictures, videos, etc folders shortcut to their respectable folders on the RAID. I would like this to be a full redundancy scheme and it is, but I've run into several nags and I would like to know how to fix them and prepare a fix-it plan before any of the drives fails. How do I retrieve data from very old (one is circa 1998) laptop drives? They contain a lot of interesting history from my time in Silicon Valley before the tech crash that I vowed I would one day retrieve. [more inside]

I have a HP Mini 110 with a 160 GB HD running Ubuntu. I'm pretty happy with it, but I don't really need all that space (currently I'm filling a tiny portion of it) and would prefer a faster boot time. What kind of improvements in speed should I expect if I swap out the hard drive with an SSD? What is the level of expense and difficulty involved in the install? Would I be better off just getting a newer notebook with an SSD already installed? What is the best source for a suitable SSD?

Since when are harddrives actually the size advertised? I just bought a Western Digital 500 GB 2.5'' HD and I was surprised when it actually turned out to be 499.32 GB after the first initialization (on a mac). [more inside]

I'm using Terminal (Ubuntu 8.04x64) right now to overwrite a 500g external hd with random information. There's been no action aside from a blinking cursor (by itself on a line, not in front of any prompt) since I entered the command yesterday afternoon:
sudo dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sdc bs=8m
I understand it's going to take a while to finish. In the meantime, is there any way to monitor the progress of the operation?

Is there anything that would prevent a working Macbook hard drive from working in a PC notebook? Is there something different about them that makes them not work in a PC?

I'd like to put a larger HD in my MacBook, but I can find any reference to the max size I can put in it. I have an Intel Core Duo MacBook (2GHz). I purchased it around Sept. 2006. The stock 60GB HD is full. I saw a recommendation for a Seagate Momentus 160GB at 7200rpm. Can I go above 160GB? Is there a max that this laptop can handle? I'm leaning towards 7200rpm for better performance, but will this impact battery life??

i lost a partition in a reformat, but the data is still on my harddrive. i want to get the data off. i have r-studio
, but not enough disk space on the existing partition to put the other data on it, and i thought i shouldn't create a new partition to put the data on, as that could mess up remaining data. i don't have an external harddrive. is there any way i can safely get the data off? thanks! [more inside]

Another boooooring computer question - sorry!
How do I clone a HD in a win2k system? My system's boot hd is a 20g 5400 rpm. I'd like to swap it for a 20 g 7200 rpm which is sitting at the moment in an external firewire enclosure. I also have 150g in an internal RAID array.

I backed up my /library/webserver/documents folder to a firewire HD. When I dragged it back, the permissions went all kablooey:
drwxr-xr-x 36 root admin 1224 16 Jan 16:58 Documents
sudo chmod 755 Documents does not give groups write privileges.
1. Do I just need to go read a good chmod tutorial, or is something aberrant happening here?
2. Is there any way to apply appropriate permissions recursively?
Many thanks. [more inside]
