Internal hard drive to external?

I have a hard disk that I pulled out of a dead computer. It has been formated and has data on it. Are there any external adapters that I can plug it into so that I can use it as an external drive?

How to get my computer to recognize my external hard drive.

This may seem like a simple tech question, but I just purchased an external hard drive, as well as an enclosure, and when I turn on the enclosure my computer (windows xp) recognizes the new hardware (little bubble on bottom right), but the drive does not show up on my computer. Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

How can I recover data from a broken hard drive?

I recently purchased a 250 GB Western Digital Caviar SE hard drive. It's a internal hd and I foolishly thought it would be ok sitting on my desk hooked up through a ide-usb cable. It also has a power cable which runs down the side of my desk. Well long story short it fell off of my desk due to someone snagging the power cable and now my computer will not recognize it. I have a lot of important data on it which I would really like to recover. Any ideas?

Hard drive on the fritz?

Time to get a new hard drive? I got a BSOD. When I restarted, my second hard drive was gone. I opened the computer case, unplugged the cable, plugged it back in and the hard drive came back. But for how long? Is this a sign that the hard drive is about to give up? The drive is about 3 years. [more inside]

Can raided firewire hard drives from one mac be attached to another mac?

Can raided firewire hard drives from one mac be attached to another mac? In other words....here's my situation. I currently have a mac mini that I use as a backup fileserver. I have 2 250gb hard drives attached to this mac mini. Although it works fine and I'm not really looking to upgrade, the 256 mbs of original ram are not enough to run any programs on it very efficiently (as far as time is concerned). [more inside]

Network-accessible standalone video player?

Does this device exist: standalone video player with a builtin harddrive, component video outs, menu system & remote, ethernet/wifi. Does not rely on computer in the house. Can be turned off/made silent like a normal device when I'm not using it. But when it's on I can watch shows and movies I've transferred to it over the network without excessive hacks-- hopefully it can decode most common video formats and play in HD if necessary. Does not need video in--I don't want a recorder. [more inside]

Hardwood steam cleaner

Steam cleaner for sealed hardwood floors? The inflight Skymall catalog had a Eureka Enviro steam cleaner for $99. I did a little online searching and it seems to be discontinued (not listed on Eureka's site). Is there a comparable product that anyone has had good luck with? I have lots of hardwood and am too lazy to get on my hands and knees. I also don't want to hire a cleaning person.

Hw can I transfer Mp3's from my Ipod to an external hard drive?

I have a 60gig Photo Ipod. In order to keep my computer's hardrive relative clean, I do not keep my MP3's stored in the Itunes library. All 9500 are strictly on my IPOD. I know I run the ris of losing all that upload work should my ipod get lost or break, but it was by choice. I recently bought a 250 gig external hard drive for the sole purpose of keeping all of my MP3's and important computer files on there....What I want to do and havent been able to figure out is, how could I go about transferring all the MP3 files from my IPOD to my computer and then to the external drive. External Hard Drive Data Loss!

I am turning to the Meta community for help since I am at a loss on how to answer this question. A good friend of mine has suddenly lost a lot of data from an external drive that he keeps on all the time. He has a Western Digital 320GB drive that stores mostly live recording of the DMB. The drive reads as 298GB total size and 78GB free space, but the only folder on the external is showing that there is only 123GB of data being stored (therefore ~98GB of data is missing). He has searched the drive for the folders but they are not showing up. Any idea of what could have happened to his files? Also, would it be safe to shut down the external (since its always on) and see if that fixes the problem?

Is there a cable I can purchase that will connect an old hard drive (i.e. the one I just removed from my old computer before donating it) and my new computer, preferably with a USB interface? Unintelligent Hard Drive Enclosure design?

I screwed up and plugged the wrong power supply into a hard drive enclosure. After the sickly smell of fried electronics wafted up to my nose, I freaked out, unplugged everything, and disassembled the enclosure. The electronics controlling the enclosure? All fine. The hard drive, not so much. One of the IC's on the drive's controller PCB is fried. My question -- is this normal design for a hard drive enclosure? It seems to me that if the enclosure recieves incorrect voltages, it would be common sense to design some failsafe idiot-proofing to keep said incorrect voltages from reaching and frying the drive. Please help me move my files from overloaded laptop to external drives

I've overfilled my laptop and want to move files to external drives. But moving keeps getting stopped for various reasons (and what the hell is a cyclic redundancy??) and I'm going nuts. Please send me your speed tips and procedure suggestions! The specifics: Toshiba satellite running windows xp; total c drive size 55.8gb, free space 12.6. External drives: f (in fat 32 which I'd like to reformat to ntfs) has a capacity of 152gb, and has only 66.1 free. Newest drive g (i've just formatted it to ntfs) has a capacity of 111gb, with 103 left after my abortive attempts to put an image disc of c on it. Thanks ... [more inside]

what is the best, most cost-effective way to backup multiple hard drives?

I have three 160 gig hard drives full of Apple Lossless music that I've ripped from my CDs. I want to keep these drives backed up, obviously. Is the most cost effective route to just buy a 500 gig (or ideally, one TB) drive for this purpose? Are there enclosures that hold multiple hard drives that would be appropriate (and cost effective) for this use? With the deals out there, it seems cheaper to buy more 160s than a 500 gig. I'm on a Mac G5.
