(I have Windows 8.1 w/ OneDrive) I've been copying music files from my Western Digital Passport ext hard drive right over to OneDrive...have learned you don't really need to add them first to the local drive of my laptop where this is all happening. Have deleted any I had previously added there. Is a file the same size on the cloud as on my WD Passport? Yes, I checked a music file just now, and the ext HDD file and OneDrive replicant are equal in space. I've read OneDrive keeps all the same, doesn't convert down. So why is it that the more I add directly to OneDrive (cloud), the more space is taken on my laptop's hard drive? Is there some cleanup I have to do? The overall space on my local disk gets smaller. BUT, it seems in fact that it would be getting even smaller if OneDrive were truly hiding some copy locally. if that's the case I count myself lucky and ask myself if there's something I just don't know about the cloud -- that it somehow uses less space overall? If that's not the case, then what is taking my laptop's HDD space? I thought all the space needed was right there in my 1TB allowance from OneDrive.
I just lost my trusty laptop and decided to go for a professional level HP workstation for both my freelance video work and personal use. The computer will come with a 1TB drive, and I wonder what should I do to keep it efficient and healthy. I used to split a 500GB drive into 2 and have OS and program folders on C: and then the rest of my files on the second partition. Is it still practical thing to do with a now TB size drive nowadays? Or anything you would do instead? Or even things besides hard drive, please share with me, thanks! lan [more inside]
A few weeks ago I bought a Lenovo Flex 2-14 laptop. I seem to have mostly conquered the issues catalogued in this question, which all stemmed from Lenovo's bizarre decision to pre-load the thing with Malware. After a total reinstall from scratch (and a lost weekend - thanks Lenovo), I'm now mostly happy with the machine, save for one crucial issue - the supplied SSD is far too small. [more inside]
After some research, I think I've found my ideal backup solution. It involves me:
- Manually creating a Macrium Reflect encrypted image file of my data once a week
- Storing the encrypted image file to two external HDDs
- Placing the external HDDs in two different (safe) physical locations
This is going back to this question where I'm dealing with obsolete computer equipment. This weekend's discovery was a laptop at least 10 years old, a desktop computer of over 5 years not running on a Windows system, and another desktop over 5 years running on Windows Vista. [more inside]
I have a MacBook Air that I am considering selling. It has an SSD, and I would like to securely wipe it clean before putting it up for sale. I know how to wipe regular hard drives, but I've heard that secure erases of SSD's actually DAMAGE the drive. Is there a secure way to remove data from an SSD hard drive without compromising its lifespan/integrity?
Hello all. Whats the best way (fast, cheap?) to clone my internal hard drive to as many external usb hard drives as possible? (up to 5 at a time, at the same time?). Can this be done in the same amount of time as it takes to clone it to one external hdd? Or would the internal bus choke on the data and take forever? Is there even software that does this? Most of the usual suspects (ghost, acronis, etc) seem designed only to clone 1:1. The default solution seems to be buying a hardware standalone hdd cloner for hundreds of bucks. Thanks for any thoughts/ideas!

The current external hard drive I have is "WD' brand that I got at best buy and I'm not happy with it. I am looking for a external hard drive that is easy to use for someone not that great with computers and I can back up my computer with it, that has the ability to be encrypted, is reliable, is ideally available locally at a place like best buy, must have a metal case, not a plastic one (the one I have now heats up and smells like burning plastic) Also bonus points if it has a fan in it. I have a PC not a mac, so it should be for a PC. Also I am not sure if I want to but one of those large external hard drives you leave attached or the smaller pocket sized one so any pro's and con's of both would be great.
Trying to swap-out circuit boards between a couple of really old Quantum Fireball CXs in attempt to retrieve data from failed unit. Cutting to chase; how do I disconnect this, without damaging it. Muchos thankos!
Trying to decide what to get, here. I've got an interal 750gb 5400 rm drive in the MBP that very occasionally throws up the dreaded "drive too slow" dialog in Logic at only 6 or 8 tracks of 24 bit 44.1 kHz. [more inside]
I have a 250 gig MacBook Pro, which is about 3 years old. I have approx. 115 gigs of music stored in my Itunes library. All duplicate MP3 files were deleted. That leaves 135 or some odd gigs of space. I keep a large majority of my documents and files in a cloud service. I maybe have 5-10 gigs of random files I keep on my HD. That leaves approx. 125 gigs of space... I know that the computer uses (and I'll guestimate 25 gigs for the OS & random program files I have on my system)... That still leaves about 100 gigs worth of space un-accounted for.... When I open my 'finder', it tells me I have approx 50 gigs of space available. I have downloaded Disk Inventory X which is suppose to give you a break down of where all the space is being used. I have also read about a program called DaisyDisk. Both seem to be reputable and popular. I d/l'ed DIX first cause it was free..It did the analysis.... But....While I have somewhat of an idea of computers, I am not sure what is safe to delete, what should't be touched....What if I delete something that has specs attached to files that shouldn't be deleted...Neither utility really gives me an idea of what is safe to delete and what should not be touched. I know I must have a large cache of files and stuff that could be deleted....Image previews, etc.... I just don't know where to look. What is safe to get rid of.....Not sure what to do..... Thanks!
