We need a handyman in the Princeton, NJ area. Qualifications are: competent, neat, honest, reliable. The problem seems to be that everyone wants to do serious remodeling, and we have more of a honey-do list.
Tried Angie's List, but the names are mostly in the Philadelphia area.

How do I learn to build... stuff? Carpentry, woodworking and construction-like activities are foreign to me (I get scared hanging pictures on a wall), and I can't seem to find anything that talks down to my pea-size brain. Can anyone recommend activities and/or reading materials that will help me become handy around the house? [MI] [more inside]

Attention handypersons: I have this idea that simple MIG welding is the sort of thing I'll be able to teach myself, without taking a class or otherwise receiving instruction beyond what I've found on the internets. Is this hubris that will end in missing digits, seared retinas and a Darwin Award? (More self-doubt inside.) [more inside]

anyone made their own speaker mounts for walls? i can't find any to buy here and am considering what i can make myself (i don't own a welder, but could buy one and have done welding in the past - i also have assorted woodworking/handyman tools). i'm assuming that a fairly rigid mount is important for sound quality, would like it to look good, probably be adjustable for toe-in, and the speakers are fairly large/heavy (b&w 602s2). advice, please.
