We moved into our little one-story house in Toronto a few months ago and one thing that came up on the home inspection was that our pot lights are not covered by vapour boots. Since then, I spoke to an insulation guy about upgrading the insulation in the attic and he suggested that instead of putting in vapour boots, switching all the pot lights to LED would be more affordable/easier; he suggested replacing the halogens with LEDs as they burnt out. Well, one bulb has burned out. I'm confused about the replacement choices. [more inside]
I have a UK traffic light head with 3 halogen bulbs (12V AC). The bulbs it came with are just like G4 12V halogen bulbs, except that the legs are fractionally thicker. It seems like they are not G4 bulbs -- so what are they? [more inside]
Dimmable LED light bulbs seem more economical than halogens. But they're really expensive. Will they quickly come down in price, so I should wait? Or will they come down slowly, so I might as well start saving? Also, how good is the dimming? I tried dimmable CFL's, but they don't seem to dim past 50%.
When converting from halogen downlights to LEDs, if it's going to be a difficult job either way, is it better to replace MR16 sockets + transformers with GU10 sockets or just to use LEDs that are designed for MR16 set-ups? (Assume that I already know that the specific transformer I have would work with the specific LEDs I would buy). And if I want to convert, where can I buy cheap GU10 sockets with Australian 3 pin plugs wired to them (without buying an entire "LED downlight kit")? [more inside]

I have ten 30 watt 12v halogen lights connected to a transformer that is rated for 300 watts. The transformer seems fairly old. I want to be able to dim the lights. What kind of dimmer do I need and how do I wire it up?

School me on light bulbs! My lamp and overhead light bulbs just died, and I'd like to use the opportunity to rethink the type I'm using. I'm totally ignorant in this area, so I'll give as many details as possible, inside the fold.... [more inside]
