In a few weeks, I'll be going to Haiti, specifically the Northern region, for a couple months to work for a NGO.
While I've worked and lived in other lesser developed countries and have briefly spoken to co-workers living there, I haven't been to Haiti before and I'd like to have a greater, more nuanced understanding of Haitian cultures and recent history before I arrive.
I'm looking for short novels, recommended blogs, or articles - pieces on Haiti would be great posts on Metafilter (I've already read past ones on here) that give me a deeper understanding of Haitian cultures and recent political history.

So next week, my girlfriend and I are going on a cruise for our third year anniversary booked through Royal Caribbean that leaves from Florida and stops at Labidee, Haiti; Falmouth, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Cozumel, Mexico. This is my first cruise, and my girlfriend’s eighth cruise. We have already booked awesome excursions in Labadee (parasailing!), George Town (turtle farm and stingray city!), and Cozumel (snorkeling boat tour!), but we are unsure what to do in Falmouth since it’s a relatively new port. My friend is trying to raise money so that his college group can go to Haiti to help earthquake victims with this Hands On Disaster Group. I am opposed to and skeptical of this concept. How do I reconcile my biases and support him? Should I?

The midwife who was incredible at our sons birth two days ago is going to Haiti for a week to work with a group of doctors.
She has been told she has to bring everything she needs for her own support.
We would like to give her a gift before she goes, perhaps something she might need and would not think of.
Any thoughts form the hive appreciated.

How can we help Haiti? I am a skilled off-road motorcycle rider and know many others. Does anyone know or have connections with a group, person, NGO that would be interested in bringing such people into Haiti to assist in delivering medicine, etc.? One of the biggest problems for aid workers is getting to the people who need help. Obviously, lives are lost with each hour that goes by.
