A good haircut?

Where can I get a good men's haircut (and style) in Las Vegas? (or Chicago?) I'm a 22 year old guy. I basically have the same hairstyle I've always had. I need a haircut and would like to try something different. I want to find a place where I can explain my basic needs and then have someone else pick the cut, then show me how to style it. There isn't really any place I know of that I'd feel confident doing that.

I'm not someone who puts a whole lot of attention into his personal appearance. I want something that looks good and is functional.

I'm in Las Vegas right now. I'll be in Chicago in a week or two. I'd prefer to do it Friday while still in Las Vegas, but will wait until Chicago if I can't find any place good. I look at this as a one-time investment into trying something new, so price isn't a huge deal.

Any suggestions where to go? Please also include rough price and how much I ought to tip, as well as any other suggestions you may have.

I did the Lady Di 'do in the '80s.

How can I ensure that my short, layered haircut doesn't feather? I got my hair cut short. My hair is pretty fine but there's lots of it and there's a natural wave in it. It's layered all over with longer layers in front, sort of with side-swept bangs that I can almost put behind my ears. It's basically a shag but I've realized that unless I'm careful, it has a tendency to "feather" on the sides and I would like to avoid that. I believe the stylist used a razor to cut in the layers.

I don't blow dry my hair and do not want to start. It's been a while since I used a lot of hair products but it seems like that's key to keeping this style looking shaggy and piece-y, right? For now I'm shampooing about once a week and just rinsing and/or conditioning about 3 other times per week. I get out of the shower, towel dry my hair, run a big handful of mousse (Herbal Essence Totally Twisted) and then scrunch it a lot as it dries. When it's dry, I'll often use a cream styler - my stylist suggested Short Sexy Hair - Slept In Texture Cream and that seems to work pretty well. I end up scrunching up my hair frequently during the day to keep it lifted off the crown of my head and and the strands in a more vertical configuration but the wave and weight of my hair tends to want to flatten and feather it against the sides of my head. This, I do not like.

Are there other tricks to keeping my hair looking more shaggy and less Lady Di?

How do I convince my husband to change his hairstyle?

How do I politely, kindly and lovingly get my husband to change his hairstyle? Yes, I know you can't change your spouse, so please no comments to that effect.

My husband has had a comb-over for the past 20 years. (He is 45.) When he was younger, it looked odd but not horrid. As his hair has thinned, it's getting more and more obvious that he's going to end up with 6 hairs across the top of his head.

I know that he's quite sensitive about how he looks. When others comment on his hair, and they *do*, it is always in the negative. Hairspray Helmet Head and the like.

He's got a great skull and would look awesome if he'd just take the dive and shave it all shorter. How do I go about convincing him that this would be a good move for his sex appeal and for his career. (I firmly believe that your looks influence people whether you like it or not.)

Maybe it's time for a (hairstyle) change?

I'm a man, and all my life I've had exactly one hairstyle. Now I'm looking to refine my look a little bit. What do I need to know? I've had pretty much the same hairstyle for 26 years. My friends and family often tease me that there's no point in me even going to the barbershop because "it always looks the same anyway". I have always worn a medium-length cut. My hair parts naturally, and I've never fought it. I pretty much use no hair products of any kind, other than shampoo and conditioner. I'm pretty conservative in my dress and grooming.

Now, I'm thinking a bit of change might be good. I might change my overall hairstyle, or maybe I want to keep my style but use some kind of product to enhance it or keep it in place a bit. However, I have no idea where to start. Can you help me? How does a man choose a new hairstyle? Is there some kind of guide? What sort of products (gels, sprays, brushes, etc) should I know about? What's the difference between a $10 barber, and a $30 salon? Any and all information would be helpful.

In general, I would consider:

A new (yet still conservative) hairstyle. A bit longer, a bit shorter, try to remove the part, whatever.

Using a subtle gel or spray to hold my hair in place or enhance it

Going to a new shop or salon if it would help

I would not consider:

Coloring or highlighting.

Gels or sprays that have a very obvious and dramatic effect - making your hair look solid, or laquered, or whatever

Anything that would shock your grandmother. I'm going for a more modest, business-friendly look.

I'm looking for more general advice about my options rather than a specific recommendation, but if it helps this is what I look like (although the part in my hair isn't always that pronounced). Also, if it matters, I live in Michigan, USA.

Thanks in advance!

What is a comfortable hairstyle-preserving bike helmet?

My spouse wants to bike to work, but doesn't want to wear a helmet, citing "heat" and "helmet hair" as the main reasons. With no concern for price, what helmet brands or models would best prevent those "horrible" conditions? This is her first attempt at biking to work. She's ridden a bike many times before, but only on bike paths away from traffic or around quiet neighborhoods (she didn't wear a helmet then, either). The commute is approximately 15 minutes through a semi-residential area, along a busy multi-lane road. She intends to ride on the sidewalk. The condition of the concrete is pretty good for the most part, but there are two or three places where tree roots or soil erosion have created bumps. She would have to cross three intersections, each leading to a housing subdivision. Since it's rush hour, traffic is significant as many people are leaving or returning to and from work, which means there will be cars pulling out of driveways and turning into these main intersections.

My wife knows why she should wear a helmet, and she's heard enough gory stories and seen pictures of accidents to understand the consequences of not wearing one. I've also told her of my own close calls on city streets with inattentive drivers (however, I no longer ride to work).

Unfortunately, the two reasons of heat and hair appear to be deal-breakers for her. She feels the short commute and fact that she will ride on the sidewalk present less risk of injury, such that she will still arrive at work safe and beautiful. Therefore, this question is less about why she should wear a helmet, and more about what kind of helmet she could wear. I think if I can show her that she can still wear a helmet and preserve her style, she'll be more inclined to do so.

Her hair is in a bob, down to her neck, and the front bangs are usually pinned with a tiny (tiny!) clip. I've asked if she could style her hair at work, but she refuses to because she can't bring nor store her products at the office, much less find a place to freshen up. She will also not wear a bandanna or cap because she feels it will only trap the heat.

I intend to bring my wife to our local bike shop to perform some maintenance checkup on her ride. Whilst there I want to have her try on some helmets and ideally show her that some helmets won't mess up her hair and still provide ventilation and protection. I've also read a couple of AskMe threads about helmet hair, and started to look at brands like Giro and Limar (unknown if the bike shop carries them).

Are there other brands that will provide a level of comfort, negate the heat and preserve her hairstyle, so that my spouse will wear a helmet on her commute?

Inept Brunette

I'm a girl with very fine, very straight, waist-length hair and for the past few weeks I've been abiding by a self-imposed rule where I do not wear it the same way two days in a row. I'm looking for ideas for hair-styles and, preferably, links to videos that explain how to do them. I was never one of those girls who does her best friend's hair during recess. I'm trying to catch up, now, and I'm surprised by how easy some interesting looking styles are. I'd like this to be a resource I can use whenever I get bored with my hair.

Hair Styles I'm Not Interested In: Anything that relies on mousse, a curling iron, hair spray, back combing, and/or volume. My hair is slippery and straight as a ruler and the only way I can get it to do anything complicated involves elastic bands and copious bobby pins. No bouffants, afros, pompadours, or beehives, as awesome as they are.

Hair Styles I Am Currently Getting Sick Of: Pigtails/bunches, plaids/braids, single braid, fishtail braids, looped braids, buns, and Princess Leia cinnamon buns. I need way more practice on the Lady-Gaga-Inspired Hair Bow

Hair Styles I Want To Try and Need More Instruction in How To Do:
french braids (Seriously, I'm still confused; any super-clear instructional videos?)
that fairy-tale-lookin' hairstyle all the hipster girls are rocking where you use a little braid as a headband
the Frida Kahlo
braids circling the head (my hair is too long for this)

Alright, Girlzone! How the heck do I do these hairstyles? What are some other ideas? What are your favorite You Tube channels for hair instruction videos? Are any of those MAGIC HAIR STICK DONUT RAT SCRUNCH WIZARD things actually worth it?

Advanced hair for men

My haircuts suck. My hair sucks. I'm massively and irrationally self-conscious about it. So how and where do I acquire the knowledge and skills to make it look better? Although sailing towards middle-age, I still have all my own hair but - in that old phrase - I can't do a thing with it. I spend a reasonable amount on haircuts, I leave the salon looking great ... and after the next shower it looks like a shorter version of the shapeless mess I walked in with. The stylist suggests using products, I do, and the result looks like I poured glue in.

So how do I get and keep a good haircut? What tips or pointers do people have to offer? What websites might have useful advice? (My googling has turned up little of any use.)

(Personal details on my tonsorial situation, if it would help, although general advice is more what I was looking for: the light, flyaway hair and pronounced widows peak of my teens is now a little lighter and a little more pronounced. Based on family history, baldness may or may not follow. Gray is just starting to creep into my natural color, which could charitably be described as "mousy".)

Curly cutter wanted in LA

Can anyone recommend a great hairstylist in Los Angeles who is particularly talented at cutting very curly hair? I am a woman who wears her hair in short, in natural ringlets, and I haven't been able to find a decent hairstylist in LA yet who actually knows how to cut very curly hair without making me look like a poodle.

I'm looking for names of specific hairstylists, along with the salons where they work. Bonus if it's a salon on the Westside of Los Angeles.

Thanks!!

How do I style my own hair? I don't know anything about hair. Styling it, anyway. I don't know how to effectively use a single hair product (even hairspray). I don't know the difference between the different types of brushes. I have no idea how to successfully achieve curls that will last or how to flip the ends of my hair. Although I am an attractive female who is very concerned with her appearance, I know NOTHING about styling hair. Just never learned, I guess.

I don't have a specific style I want to ask how to achieve. I'd like a website that will teach me EVERYTHING about hair, from the ground up. I've tried googling this, but there are so many terrible "about.com-esque" webpages that clutter the search results, I'm finding it hard to navigate. Books that will teach me all there is to know about hair would also be great. Thank you so much!

Do my hair?

I have long, fine-textured-but-thick-in-amount wavy hair and a two-part question about what to do with it. Help? First part: an event-specific question. I am going to a wedding tomorrow afternoon, and it is on Staten Island, and I am taking a combination of trains, buses, and ferries to it. I would like to do something to my hair that looks fancy, but not overdone, and importantly, does not look like a wild mess at the end of my journey to the wedding. I want something fancier than a ponytail and less severe than a bun, but almost anything except those two options results in a halo of flyaway strands all over my head (for instance, even the tightest french braid will not stay), unless I use so much hairspray and gel that it appears that I soaked my head in glue prior to leaving the house. I want to avoid that look.

My hair is the combination of very abundant and very silky-textured that makes it very hard to deal with. It is lightly layered, about halfway down my back, and is light brown. I also have bangs. What should I do with it tomorrow? Relatively easy/low maintanence, please, because my skills are limited. I'd like to wear it up rather than blow it out or scrunch it, because when it is down, it takes about four seconds and a walk down the hall for a giant knot to form in it. Which leads to the second part of my question:

2) What can be done to avoid these horrible knots occuring in hair like mine? My hair is longer than it's been for years, and now I'm remembering why I cut it off long ago. Knots! No matter what! Really big knots! Is there some product or some secret (besides "cut it off" or "always wear it up") to keeping long, wavy, thick-but-fine-textured hair knotless?

Does anyone make a comfortable headband for women?

Does anyone make a comfortable headband for women? I frequently give my very voluminous hair a little control by wearing my sunglasses on the top of my head, so the bangs are in front and the rest is sort of lightly restrained. It is, however, a very informal look and I'd like to be a little less casual at work. Are there headbands that actually work on adult heads? Every headband I've bought from the drug store is too tight behind the ears, and ends up giving me a headache. I can't quite get the same look from a loop of elastic or fabric, unless maybe there's a way of arranging the hair over it to be less...sweatband-ish? How do you ladies pin your hair out of your face without resorting to a ponytail?

My other half really wants me to get the modern shag hair style like Brad Pitt's. I have long hair at the moment and I'm not too keen on the change... I think it's too feminine (pink is not the new black) and outdated. Am i being too stubborn?

Hair straightening in Chicago

Where to get hair straightened in Chicago? The girlfriend and I are going to be in Chicago this weekend, and she'd like to get her hair straightened. It's fairly long - down between her shoulder blades. We'd like a place that:
1. Won't do horrible damage, and
2. Is reasonably priced.

We're going to be visiting friends in Lakeview, so bonus points if it's anywhere around there. Any experience or suggestions?

what would you do with this hair?

Help me find a cool short(er) hairstyle for my thick wavy hair! I'm having my occasional itch to do something relatively drastic with my hair. (It's been waist-length & pixie-short over the years, as well as flame orange, blond, and fire-engine-red.)

Right now it looks like the first few pictures here, you can see I've grown it out from a shag-like cut over the last year, and before that it was a kinda "meh" bob. I've been grooving on the big fluffy hair, but it's getting on my last nerve. I'm thinking short, mid-jaw or shorter.

I bike a lot, and do yoga occasionally. Something that survives a couple of miles under a helmet without looking totally f'ed up is very important. Plus, as you might imagine from that, I'm not much for lots of products or fussing, although I don't mind a bit of something or a little blow-drying. I'm in a professional, moderately conservative work environment, but I'd like to fall on the hip/artsy side of the spectrum.

My hair is very thick, inconsistently wavy, and grows freakishly fast. I'm starting to get a few grey hairs, and they have a crazy kinky texture, but they're not very noticeable (yet). IMO I have a tiny head for my body, although less so than I used to. :)

Although I like my stylist, I'm terrible at explaining what I want done with my hair, so good photos and especially terminology are appreciated. Thank you!

Excuse me, Sir/Madam

I'm trying to grow out the straightest hair in the world, from pixie-short. I'm a woman. It's going fast, but I need some in-between styles or tricks to avoid looking like I'm 15 in the meantime. Bonus question about really loose perms. I have ludicrously straight hair, as every hairdresser I've ever been to seems to feel the need to tell me. There's a lot of it, it grows fast, and it is not going to take any kind of curl no matter how hard I try. Really, no curl. It's healthy and in great condition, in spite of swimming lots and dyeing, and has only ever shown damage after a week of five bleachings.

Here is a self-link to photos, with the most recent squinty shot being a few weeks old.

I have done the pixie-to-shoulder-length thing a few times before. This time, though, I'm already feeling self-conscious about looking young for my age (not terminal but it's leading to frustration) and making anything seem scruffy no matter how hard I try. I don't want to look like a sulky teenage haystack for the next 6-8 months and I'm not wild enough about my appearance to take the additional hit.

By shoulder-length, I plan to go for a fringe/bangs, so the front part is not a massive worry, but I feel mullety letting the back grow. I don't mind slowing it down by a month or two if that's the cost of having it decent-looking for some of the interim.

Any suggestions for cute, hip straight-hair styles that might suit along the way would be super super great. Photos much appreciated.

Bonus question: has anyone had a really loose perm (from dead-straight to very loose curl) and found it worthwhile? How often did you need to get it done? I can't afford to add €100 in hair styling every month or so, but I am desperate enough that I might be willing to do it a few times to break long stretches of Ugly.

Also, I'm in rural Ireland. No hair training schools, no extensions, etc. Cheers!

Way too shaggy

Haircuts for teenage son with mid-length, loose curl, blonde, thick, and very coarse hair? My son (15) isn't taking good care of his hair. It's grown out pretty badly. He wants a wash and wear style, but his hair texture doesn't seem to suit long hair. He looks like an madman with angry hair, it's just so Poofy, Heavy, Wavy, Electrified, etc.

He doesn't like wax or products similar to it. With short hair, he only likes normal to tight curls. His hair is straight when short. The only long hair styles he likes are impossibly unrealistic styles meant for fine straight hair.

What will layers do to thick, coarse hair? Are there decent mid-length styles for this texture? He really wants long hair, but I just don't see it. It's just so much weight when it's long and he doesn't clean down to his scalp good enough. But, a big part of that issue is the overall un-manageability of the thickness.

What shampoos are good for this type of hair? Any recommendations for this type of hair (coarse, thick, long) are badly needed.

I want my hair to look like Jemaine Celemnt's. How do I do this? All right, so, this is the first decent haircut I think I can pull off. Normally, I just go with longer on the top, shorter on the sides. Typical barbershop cut. My head is large and kind of like a rectangularish block, but it looks like this dude's head is the same, we even have the same face shape to some extent.

So, I'm growing it out, but, uh, what else do I do? This is new territory for me.

Not straight

Where are the short, feminine hairstyles for thick and wavy hair? After cutting my hair short in fifth grade (and crying for hours after someone mistook me for a boy), I'm finally, at age twenty, ready to try short hair again. I'd like a style that's off my neck- not a boyish style, but definitely more extreme than a bob or something.

The problem is, EVERY SINGLE hair site I've seen has exactly two styles of short haircut- the ultra-straight sleek kind, and the ultra-fake-curler-ringlet kind. I've yet to see any styles online that would work with my hair, which is thick and semi-wavy. Here is a recent picture which shows what my hair is like.

I have occasionally seen people with my hair texture who had good-looking short cuts, but I can't exactly whip out my camera to photograph strangers' haircuts.

I do plan to ask the stylist for advice- I'm not going to just show her a picture and have her go to town- but I would like some idea of what's possible and what's not.

My only specific desires are that it be off the neck and that it not require straightening or blowdrying to look decent.

How can I style my hair in a similar manner to Hugh Laurie in the TV show House? Is it even possible with wavy hair? What products do I use? A few more details:

I am looking for a new hairstyle (I currently just comb it).
I am a 20 year old college student.
I need lots of help as I've never styled my hair before.
If I can't do it with wavy hair, what styles could I try?

Eeek! It's the floating soccer mom head! Help me escape!

How can I absolutely, positively avoid the suburban matron/soccer mom look when I have short hair? After having below-the-shoulder long hair most of my life, I'm now pretty much a convert to short-hairdom. When I got my long hair cut off, there was a universal "You look terrific! This suits you so much better!" reaction. Plus, it's easier to care for. So, for the foreseeable future, I'm keeping it short.

The look I aim for is the gamine/rocker-chick look - think Joan Jett, Natalie Portman, Jean Seberg, etc. How do I make sure I maintain this look and not tumble over the cliff into a soccer mom abyss? I've seen so many women with short hair - even ones with cute haircuts - and they look so gawdawful matronly. What are some subtle things in regards to hair, makeup, fashion, etc. that make the difference between "gamine" and "frump?"

I'm in my 40's, which means I have to fight hard against looking matronly. I used to get my hair streaked with purple, but due to job reasons can't anymore. I especially want to guard against looking middle-aged and frumpy when I have to dress more conservatively than is my wont due to work reasons. My "natural" style is more artsy and funky. I don't want to look like I'm trying too hard, but at the same time I don't want to fall into a frumpy, desexualized, she's-given-up abyss.

Please help me reconcile my desire for a neat hairstyle with my special someone's unreasonable attraction to a Beatles-style do! My traditional hairstyle has always been something like this:
unfortunately, the first google result turned up Ricky Martin :p

My girlfriend, on the other hand, likes something like this:
Beatlemania!

I think I look best with a short, gelled (wet) look, and my girlfriend likes a dry, long, natural Beatles-type look. I don't mind wearing my hair a little longer because I love being called cute. However, I think I look way better with a gelled look, and I'm a complete newbie to fashion.

Please help me find a hairstyle that is compatible with my new, longer hair, is easy to maintain, and will let me use gel (or something else to create a wet look). When ungelled, it should look something like a Beatles cut.

Just pictures won't do, as I'm hopeless at these things and would probably require some pretty detailed instructions.

Thanks!

How can my current hair become David Tennant's hair?

So I always have boring haircuts. Standard businessman cut type. Cause I'm lazy and hate having to do anything with it in the morning. And this morning I realized it is now at the point where it needs to be cut as it's looking, well, like it needs to be cut. (How it looks right now: me1,
me2,
me3, though for some reason in the pics it looks a lot less in need of cleanup than it does in real life.)

So I'd like to do something a bit more interesting, a bit more daring. Not much, but a little. I'm kind of in a turning myself around mentally state, and it's passing over into things like this. And you know what style (roughly) I like? David Tennant-ish messy. Seen here and here.... But here's my question: My hair probably CAN'T do that now. The length isn't nearly enough, the current cut can't be reshaped into that, etc. etc. So what do I tell my hairstylist to get a hair cut that looks decent now, maybe even with that same messy feel, but lets it evolve into either that or something that can be cut to that down the line?

(Also note that I'm in suburbia, so my choice of places is somewhat limited to barber shop and low-rent salons)

Did you feel good about chopping off all your hair?

Have you ever had long hair, then cut it short? How did you feel about it? I think a similar question has appeared here before, but I can't seem to track it down--and I think this one comes at it from a different angle, anyway.

For nearly a decade, I've had long hair, down past the small of my back. I've never dyed or heat-treated it, so it's undamaged and usually shiny. People compliment me on it frequently, and make distressed noises when I talk about cutting it ("oh, you can't, it's so pretty!") It's reasonably low-maintenance, requiring little more than washing, brushing, and a simple trim every few months (I've come to think of long-hair-in-a-ponytail as the Standard Unisex Geek Hair, adopted by most of my geek friends who don't want to have to think about hair products or finding a decent barber.)

However, I've come to feel it's time for a change. I've often thought of cutting it short: for a different look, a lighter head, a larger variety of haircut options, easier day-to-day care, the ability to experiment with different colors, the sheer invigorating effect of change. I've always shied away out of fear that I'll regret destroying my several years' investment. However, according to Daniel Gilbert's Stumbling On Happiness, my own hypotheses on how I'll respond to future situations are likely to be only marginally accurate. Gilbert cites studies showing that asking other people how they felt in a certain situation is a much more reliable way to predict how I myself will feel.

So: tell me about your experiences divesting yourself of all your lovely hair. Did you gradually go shorter and shorter, or did you cut it all off at once? Did you regret it? Did you feel liberated? Did you have mixed feelings? Did you enjoy it initially but come to feel differently later? Did the process of growing it out again drive you mad?

Lifeskills: how to find a men's hairstylist that knows their stuff?

Other than asking friends, what do I look for / how do I find an incredible men's hair stylist? And once found, how do I help them help me? It's time for a major restyling but it will be a tall order if it can be pulled off, so I fear most stylists are going to think they're up to it, then botch it. How do you sleuth which stylists are the ones to trust?
(Bonus points for non-country-specific answers, so I can find good stylists wherever I go) I've only really had disappointing experiences with stylists and need help changing this (problems include assuming that the standards aren't very high for men's haircuts, or they're used to doing women's hair and seem to think that styling men's can't be all that different, then discover too late that it's thinner than they thought, etc)

That was all years ago and I haven't been to one since, so I'm anxious, but I'm also sick of my boring hairstyle and want something stylish and trendy for once before it thins so much I have to shave it off. (It is thinner than it looks in some areas, making it quite easy to botch, plus I want to try something pretty radically different from what it is now, hence the desire stylists specialising in men's hair and styles).

And since to date I have no successful stylist experience, how should I help them help me? Since their time is presumably valuable, how much time can I reasonably expect to discuss things with them without committing to using their service? Stuff like that. And what (if any) options do you have if they botch it?

Any general and related tips appreciated too!

Pimp my hair! On second though, please don't.

Is there a "sartorialst"-style website for haircuts? The girl who cuts my hair does a good job. I allow her a pretty free hand with my hair 'cause I always get compliments after she's done waving her scissors at my head. But I'd like to get a feel for what people out there in the world are doing with/having done with their hair without having to read "US" or "People" or similar supermarket tabloid stuff.

So, are there sites out there that show what's hot right now, what's edgy, what's goofy, what's weird and beautiful and fun in the world of hair?
