This question is specific to NYC. I'm wondering what people's experiences have been getting free haircuts from the various schools around town - Aveda, Bumble and Bumble, Arrojo. Often, people offer free haircuts on craigslist and elsewhere, in order to get models for class projects. FWIW, I'm a male, 29 yo "hipster," although I'd also welcome opinions from women.

I love
Melissa McBride's haircut. It's basically the main (only) reason I watch "The Walking Dead." I would like it for my very own. However, I have a head full of crazy cowlicks. Would cutting my hair this short make me look like Alfalfa from Our Gang?

Round-face haircut suggestions, help, and probably emotional counseling needed. How can I articulate what I want my hair to look like? Any ideas for straight hair + round face haircuts?

Help me find photos of awesome, crazy, asymmetrical, nontraditional, etc haircuts for women with long hair. For a point of reference, I'm looking for something along the lines of the work at
WIP Hairport.

I'm trying (again) to grow my hair out. Every time I've tried this before, my wavy, somewhat poofy hair looks terrible after a couple months - like the geeky kid in period 70s movies. Help me maintain a fashionable hair style until it gets where I want it!

I recently got a haircut that I am not all that pleased with. To make myself feel better, I want to watch movies where characters give themselves really bad haircuts. Help me think of some.

Have you ever gone to a hairstylist, sat down, said "do whatever you want" and experienced a miracle? I need one of those in Seattle.

Should I get highlights/lowlights to make a boring but practical haircut look more interesting? And where can I get a boring but practical (read: no layers, long, cut straight across) haircut in Northern VA?

Is there a resource (web, ideally, but books, etc. are fine too) that shows multiple ways to style basic haircuts? I want it to show a picture of the cut (ex. shoulder-length bob), with lots of options as far as updo's, blow-outs, waves, partial ups, etc. I'm not talking about the 1 or 2 styles it shows in a lot of styling books that are available at the chain salons - I want lots and lots and lots. Is there anything out there?

ForMyBetterHalfFilter: Pips is looking for a good women's salon in New York when she can get her hair cut and styled to her liking for under $75. As a guy who gets $12 trims I have no idea. Any suggestions?

Need recommendations for men's hair stylist in San Francisco/ East Bay Area. My SO's much younger brother is staying with us for the summer. He has terrible hair- thin, fine, and yet somehow wiry. Tendency to do weird spiky things. Help us help him get a decent haircut.

Recommendations for a place to get a good men's haircut in the Washington, DC/Arlington, VA area? I'm looking for somewhere a little better than your run-of-the-mill SuperCuts/Hair Cuttery but not a totally intimidating/fancy salon.

My hair has been viciously attacked by a raving lunatic posing as a barber. What can I do to make it grow back as fast as possible? I'll take estrogen pills (and deal with my new breasts) if it'll help.

In an effort to be thriftier, I'm thinking of learning to cut my own hair. I checked online and info is sparse, or mostly aimed at women who trim their own bangs.
Suggestions on books or any other tips/tricks would be appreciated.

Male pattern balding. I've arrived at the point where I will need to either do something to counteract it, learn to accept it, or perhaps, a little of both. Any suggestions for products/states of mind/haircuts with dignity that have worked for you?
