I'm a bit OCD from a touchy/feeling standpoint, and hair gel / spray / wax gives me the chills. I have short hair (under a few inches) and need to gel my hair for work (office environment). Any suggestions for a non-sticky feeling, OCD friendly hair gel / spray / wax etc.?
My son is 12, and he's set on dying his hair jet black. I'm not sure what reasons I should give if I tell him no, or what consequences may arise if I tell him yes. I'm hoping to hear from some of you with experience raising, teaching, or being a child like this. [more inside]
I'm a mid-20's guy who often gets told that I look better with longer hair. Unfortunately, I'm terrible at styling so I usually stick with shorter lengths. Lately, I've been trying to grow the 'do out a bit. Although I am able to leave the house looking alright, if the wind is blowing I am liable to end up looking like a crazy person within moments. Please share with me advice on how to tame my hair into submission! [more inside]
My shower has a flat drain cover that looks like this. I have a lot of hair that of course falls out when I take a shower. I wanted to get a hair catch for the drain to prevent clogs, but all the ones I can find at Home Depot have a little cup which won't work. Also, the drain cover doesn't appear to be easy to remove, as there are no screws on the top (I'm a renter, so I don't want to pry it off or anything). Do you have any ideas of what I can use instead (and how to attach it)? Some kind of mesh that would withstand daily showering?
I currently have full blonde highlights, but I've had it with the cost and upkeep. I'm looking for a lower maintenance option. [more inside]
I made the leap and stopped shampooing my hair six weeks ago, learned how a high pH can really mess it up and have almost found my outer Farrah. Enter the apple cider vinegar rinse. Do you do this? What is the right way? My approach needs finesse. No-poo MeFippies: help me tweak my routine. [more inside]

I'm going to dye my hair bright, bright red. I've always wanted to do this color but have avoided it because I know that red tends to be the fastest-fading of the superbright hair colors. What can I do, beyond what I'm already planning, to make sure that it lasts as long as possible? [more inside]

I'm an actress who, on my own time, let's my hair do it's wild and crazy thing. That is not acceptable for ninety-nine percent of auditions. I think I've figured out the make-up thing, more or less, but I don't know what to do with my hair when there is even a hint of humidity in the air. Help me! [more inside]
I have long, fine hair that I've been bleaching and dyeing at home, with Special Effects, for over a decade. The dye always lasts beautifully, fades minimally and gracefully, and I only have to redo it when my roots grow out - about every 3-4 months. I get a huge number of compliments on my hair and have no desire to switch to anything less vibrant for the foreseeable future. Special Effects hair dye isn't available now - - and I need another option! [more inside]
Is there a product or technique for protecting peekaboo highlights when recoloring hair at home? [more inside]
I've been using a certain brand and shade of home hair color for a while with good results. Lately I've decided the color is a little too warm for me. I have an unopened box of the now too-warm shade and don't want to waste it. Can make it useable by adding something to make it more neutral/cooler? Details within. [more inside]
I have very, very fine hair. Silky, almost baby-fine. My mother has been offering to get me high-end keratin extensions because she said there are areas where the hair is very sparse. I have heard only disastrous things about extensions, but am very open (hopeful even) to hearing otherwise. Can you give me feedback? Which methods were less damaging? Was it worth it? [more inside]
I just got my hair chopped off! What do I put in it to make it look good? Recommendations needed for thick, wavy hair. [more inside]
A few years ago I stopped using sulphate shampoo, which also meant all my favorite leave-in styling products (with silicone) had to go. I still haven't found anything to replace them. I have thick, shoulder length hair and after it is dry, I like to put something in to smooth it out and tame it down some. Any suggestions?
I made this ask mefi question earlier, and got my SO this 5 star Rapid Fire Variable Speed heavy Duty hair Clipper Professional 8233 as a present. He loves it but complains that it doesn't cut short enough. The smallest guard it comes with is the "no guard" size 1 pictured here. I'd like to get him one which cuts much shorter (under 1mm), but there are so many different kinds, labeled 50,40, or 000 or 0000 and some for animals, and some for 5star series but that don't list the 5 star rapid fire. Can someone please find a site where I can buythe correct one online and have it shipped to him in Europe that is the exact correct fitting blade for his clipper? thanks a lot
Hello. Can anyone recommend a doctor in the NYC area that specializes in female hair thinning? Thanks!
I get sweaty when I work out. I get REALLY sweaty when I practice yoga in a 105 degree room. I need a headband that will 1) help keep my hair out of my face when I'm in down dog and 2) help prevent my hair sweat from joining forces with my face sweat. [more inside]
I have become annoyed recently in that I persistently find my hair greasy. I shower and shampoo about once a day. I have tried the counter-intuitive "shower less" route but that doesn't solve the problem, but makes it worse. I often shower at night and the next morning I go to work and find my hair greasy a few hours later. It's a lot better when I shower in the morning and blow dry it, but I don't want to do that forever. For reference, my hair is highlighted blonde (and growing out the color) and I use Aveeno's shampoo and conditioner. I wash my sheets regularly. My hair is wavy and not super fine. I am white. Not sure if anything else would be relevant about my habits and/or routine...happy to answer questions or take recommendations.
I have thin, wavy hair. Since I was about twelve, "doing my hair" has consisted of washing it and leaving it down, or, on a not-shower day, putting it up in a ponytail. One of my goals this year is to learn how to have nice-looking hair when I want to. Help! [more inside]
For cosplay purposes, I'd like to have my straight, chin length bob converted to messy curls, along the lines of this or this. I've used wigs before now to achieve good results for hair styles that I couldn't achieve with my actual hair, but I'd like a short, messy, curly bob this time around and I'd love to learn how to do this myself. [more inside]
I've seen variations of a hairstyle on various stylish-seeming women that is sort of halfway between a pixie and a bob. It has the layers of a pixie, but is a few inches longer--maybe a little less than chin length? It does not have the traditional cut-straight-across-the-bottom look that a bob has. Bangs may or may not be part of the equation, but they are usually longer and sideswept. The hair almost seems to be shaped so that it hugs the head as it curves down into the neck, rather than hanging down in drapes. [more inside]
Looking at trying to twist up my own hair need input on how to start I have very fine straight hair. Any and all suggestions would be welcomed! Thanks

There's a new version of the no!no! hair removal system, so I'm taking another stab at asking the hive mind for their opinion. The question was asked back in 2008 and 2004; back then it was new and pretty unknown and now the usual online sources have as many good reviews as bad. Five years later, I'm hoping there are enough MeFites that have tried it to get a better sense of how well it works. [more inside]
Does anyone have any magic ways to keep your hair less sweaty while exercising? I want to run every second day, but I don't want to wash my hair that often and have just realised that that is actually the number one reason why I procrastinate on running. [more inside]
This has been going on for about a year. At first I noticed my shoulder length hair falling out more but that has definitely improved. For the last month it's begun to feel a little itchy and for a few weeks I started using dandruff shampoo every 2 days though I don't have that problem. Does anyone have any thoughts or solutions before I cut it.
There are plenty for pet hair. What about "human" hair? And we are talking "long strands" here. [more inside]
After watching this scene from Full Metal Jacket, my SO wanted to get a pair of similar quality clippers. He has shaved his head by himself for more than 10 years but often complains of clippers that clog, or have a slow motor or "miss spots". He was blown away by the clippers in that Full Metal Jacket scene. After searching online Wahl seems to make good ones. Can anyone recommend me some good high quality clippers? He shaves his head with no guard on the blade down to 1/8".
I'm looking for a nice art book covering fashion and (particularly) hairstyles, both men's and women's, in America in the 30s, 40s, and/or 50s. This is a gift for a hairstylist, so pictures are key - the text is much less important. Price range up to $200. Thanks!
I want to get my hair cut, and I'd like to go to someone who can just look at me and say "This, this is what you should do with your hair," or something like that. A genius with scissors. Any recommendations for a really skilled haircutter in NYC? I don't want to pay too much more than $100, if I can help it. Thanks!

I have barely shoulder length hair which I typically wear down at work or when I'm out. After several hours, I sometimes get a headache which is immediately alleviated by putting my hair up (I'd say I get a headache after leaving my hair down about 20% of the time). Why is this happening? [more inside]
Yesterday i dyed my hair blue underneath my regular blonde. I am normally very low maintenance, like wash and go, and didn't really think through how to take care of it. Looking for specific suggestions on products I can pick up today or order online that will keep the blue as blue as possible. Should I try dry shampoos? I honestly have just been using aussie shampoo since the 80s, so trying to find a new product seems oversized. I was told to keep the blonde and blue separate when I wash my hair, like put the blue in a ponytail, wash the blonde and put conditioner on it, and then wash the blue. If anyone has managed to do this, tips for this also welcome.
Is selling or donating my hair worthwhile, or should I just get a damn haircut like normal people? [more inside]

I have medium-thick, fine, kind of wavy hair that I have washed and either pulled back still-wet into a high ponytail or French braided every day since the beginning of time. It's a little longer than shoulder-length. I would like to find some more interesting and adult things to do with it, (maybe something that looks a little less severe?) but would not like to spend more than 10 or (gulp) 15 minutes of my morning on hair-related tasks. Is this even possible? [more inside]
Looking for a place or a particular stylist who will cut my queer hair and who may even offer suggestions about style. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
Can you recommend a shampoo for a scalp with excess sebum BUT also dry, frizzy, curly hair? [more inside]
I used to be able to shampoo, blow dry, and curl my hair and then sleep on it for a day or two at a time to spare my ends daily heat damage. Then I got bangs. My bangs get oily mere hours after I get out of the shower, forcing me to shower, dry, and style my hair every day and accumulate the repercussions of constant heat contact. Dry shampoo makes my hair look even oilier. So how can I keep my roots/bangs oil-free and my ends healthy? [more inside]
I'm a guy with fairly long hair (between chin and shoulder length) who wants to try something a little daring and, yes, possibly very stupid. I've been thinking about getting one side buzzed short- not shaved- while leaving the rest long. How should I request this? What is that even called? Details and stuff inside. [more inside]

Remember The Wet Look? Well, I need The Drowned Look. For this year’s Halloween costume contest, my buddies and I are going as the ladies of Shakespearean tragedy, and I drew Ophelia.
