My wife has been dealing with thinning hair for a number of years. She has been thoroughly investigated from a medical standpoint and there doesn't seem to be any reversible cause; it also runs in her family. She's already had one round of hair transplantation three years ago, which went well, but it's expensive and several more treatments would be needed to really increase her hair density. She's tried minoxidil and Nizoral without much luck. So, we've been researching scalp micropigmentation and are looking for some advice. (I'm posting at her request -- this isn't something I'm planning to surprise her with.) [more inside]
I'm a menopausal lady with a dark mustache. Bleaching it is no longer cutting it, as it's growing long and thick, and I now look like a blonde Magnum P.I. Tell me about electrolysis or lasers or whatever is best? And recommendations in L.A.? [more inside]
My wife asks: I am wondering if I dye my hair ombré, would the roots/upper part of my hair stay unchanged and healthy? I know the color will not change on that part because only the tips are dyed. But will the process change my hair health entirely? [more inside]
I am a petite white woman in my forties. How can I pass as a conservative? Hateful people seem to be able to tag me immediately as a leftist, no matter what I'm wearing. [more inside]
I want to buy Soft & Gentle products, specifically Hair Minimize and Cool Boost. However, I can't buy them online because apparently no one sells them in, or to, the United States. I only see the products on ASDA and Superdrug, and they only have the price in pounds and won't take my zip code. [more inside]
I'm a man with medium-length, thick, generally wavy hair that's prone to frizz. It's curled up at the ends since forever, and I've always tried to tamp that down by working in mousse while it's still damp. However, occasionally I'll accidentally wash it in a certain way and wake up the following morning with lots of big O-shaped ringlets. I quite like the look, others do too, and it does away with my curly-ends problem. How can I achieve this more consistently? [more inside]

I've been very self-conscious about my "five-head" since I was a little girl, when my own mother relentlessly criticized my appearance (I had no idea it was even a thing before that). Recently saw this article, and began contemplating how far hair transplant procedures have progressed in recent years as a viable solution for women. I'm looking for advice and thoughts from anyone who has been in a similar boat. More after the jump: [more inside]

Every time I go get my (incredibly bushy but otherwise healthy) hair cut, I practically beg the hairstylist to thin it out. And every time, they do a little thinning and then say that they have to stop because anything more will cause it to look stringy. After some back-and-forth I normally just leave the salon, go home and attack my new, poofy hair halo (I normally get a bob) with thinning shears until I am happy with the way it lays closer to my head. It doesn't look stringy at all as far as I can tell. How do I convince hair stylists to do this thinning for me? [more inside]
Historically, how have ladies dealt with armpit hair? [more inside]
First off, these are not ingrown. They are very short hairs which protrude, normally, from the skin. They are no longer attached at their base yet they remain in the follicle. Sometimes they cause irritation in the skin around the follicle. The gentlest tug will remove them but they are short and difficult to see or grip. [more inside]
I have long, dark hair. I know that I will be responsible for a long trail of shed strands and hairballs, possibly for the rest of my life. Thus, I've developed various coping mechanisms: constant vigilance about certain areas of the bathroom, tying my hair up during food prep, &c. I'd like to know what habits you other longhairs keep in order to reduce your hair-trail in home/professional environments -- and on your clothes. [more inside]
Do you have any good home remedies for hair loss in women? I have noticed that my hairline is receding somewhat. My part looks a bit wider and you just see a bit more of my scalp generally. I cannot identify a cause but it happened over the course of 4-8 months. I eat a good diet with plenty of protein (eggs, etc.). Thyroid tests normal. I have noticed a bit more hairs shed in the shower, but nothing that unusual. No hairs on the pillow, but some on the floor. Scalp okay but a bit of dandruff. I have been using a new hair color but I can't imagine it would cause my hair to fall out at the roots when rest of it is long and healthy looking. The loss is mostly at the temples and top third of my head. I used to have A LOT of hair. Any suggestions or home remedies are welcome!
I recently began laser hair removal at a salon in nyc and have had amazing results. I want to continue but it's.... crazy expensive. Are all places generally the same or do you get what you pay for? [more inside]
My shoulder length hair is very very dry. What success have you had in treating your hair if it is also dry? I put on coconut oil almost nightly and leave it on but it doesn't seem to have made a big difference. My initial problem was my hair was falling out and it was dry. The falling out has improved but the dryness has not. I'm looking for methods you use to combat successfully the dryness and or products that you rate highly.
i'm really really really really really tired of being a black woman in America and dealing with ridiculous comments people make when I do something as simple as wear my hair the way nature designed it. Most of the time I'm happy with who I am, but simply being myself is like death by a thousand cuts and there are some days when things really add up and they get to me. [more inside]
I got my light brown hair highlighted last week and the stylist did exactly the opposite of what I asked. Now that I've blown my whole hair budget on nothing, I want to try to achieve my original blonde hair wishes at home. [more inside]
I have long, thin, fine, hair and I fantasise about wavy tresses like these for my wedding next month (I am doing my hair myself). I have previously had zero luck with rollers or metal curling tongs + hairspray and/or mousse, they leave me with sticky, flat, straight hair after an hour or two. Help? [more inside]

I have shortish wavy/curly hair that I straighten and add some texture to with a wand. It really doesn't do well with rain/mist/humidity, but I live in a part of the country where I don't have to deal with that as much. What should I do to make it more manageable when I move to Seattle? I'm looking mostly for comparison-shopping advice on the different smoothing chemical treatments but I'm open to other ideas. A few years back, this wonderful community helped me find one of my favorite personal items, a beautiful vintage folding comb. I use it often. The only trouble is, I use it after I have applied a variety of hair products, including, but certainly not limited to, petroleum-based pomades like Murray's and water-based pomades like Layrite and Reuzel. The result is gross grey-ish buildup that I suspect is a combination of hair gunk, scalp gunk, and pocket lint. [more inside]
I've been recently diagnosed with PCOS, and the difficult part at the moment is the chin acne/facial hair - because I'm a fidget and tend to pick at things. And it makes me feel pretty rubbish about my appearance. PCOS people, what have you used that's helped? Were there any miracle products, or did dietary changes help too? [more inside]

As I’m growing older, I find my ear lobes to be increasingly covered in fine hairs. My battery powered nose/ear trimmer fails me. Can this fluff be removed via waxing (pain tolerance is high)?
Looking for ways of wearing a head scarf/wrap/bandana/etc that look BOTH definitely feminine AND appropriate for a young secular white woman. I'm trying to avoid looks that are unisex or tomboyish (which tend to make me, a trans woman, look more masculine than I'm comfortable with). Does such a thing exist?
My hair is longish. It's always been long to longish. For the last few months I've been thinking of cutting off about 6 inches and having a long, angled bob. What's it like to go from long hair to shortish hair? [more inside]
Three or four times over the past four years, I have had the haircut of my dreams. But for reasons I genuinely don’t understand, no matter how many pictures I bring into the salon of what I’m after, it has been extremely difficult to keep getting the same haircut. So I turn to the hair professionals and other styling experts of Metafilter: please help me become fluent in stylist-speak so that I can explain exactly what I want! [more inside]

I've started coloring my hair at home. I have found many sites that offer reviews for these products, but they are organized by product, not by color. For example, on Amazon, all reviews for L'Oreal Preference are all in a clump. What I'd like to find is a site where people have commented on specific colors. For example, I'd like a set of reviews for L'Oreal Preference Medium Ash Blonde (8A). I realize I can search Amazon by keyword, but I feel like there must be something out there that does a better job of organizing this. [more inside]
For the past 6 months, I've been in an on/off battle with my scalp - mostly the crown and a bit towards the back. It itches badly when I break a sweat (I workout daily), and then produces flakes in rough patches. The flakes build up (and re-build) incredibly fast - like overnight, in patches that are thick and dry. I've tried all the OTC products (T-Gel, T-Sal, Nizoral, Dermarest, Tea Tree shampoo, etc) - and they offer some temporary relief - but the flakes, patches, and sweat-itchiness continues. Please help! My friend's son's hair starts getting curly after it grows a few inches long. What would cause hair to switch from being straight to being curly after growing a certain length (or, probably more accurately, after a certain amount has passed since a certain point on the hair was created)?
I'd like to be able to shower and wash my hair at night, rather than in the morning. When I do this, how do I make my hair not look like I slept on it? [more inside]
I used to get great haircuts from a barber named Yollanda in Brooklyn. She worked at Badlands Salon in Park Slope, but when I called them up last week, they told me she no longer works there, and they obviously have no incentive to tell me where she's working now. I'd love to track her down— she's the best and I wish we had exchanged contact info! All I know is that she's originally from Jamaica, and lives near Atlantic Terminal. Anyone know her and where she's cutting hair right now?

I just got a super short haircut, and started using this incredible hair wax to style it into tiny, tiny spikes: Scentsiv Unscented Fragrance Free Hair Styling Wax. Asking for more aesthetic advise, not medical. My dark brown hair is wavy and about 6 inches past my shoulder blades, and falling out at a rapid pace. Is there a cut or color I should get to help make it look less startling? Or just invest in lots of hats? Or maybe there are hair accessories I can buy that sort of cover up the crown? Advice is most appreciated. [more inside]
I pretty much always have at least one hair follicle on my head that's all plugged up with dead skin or full of backed up sebum or just generally gross and disgusting.
