Give me your baby hacks! My wife and I are expecting our first child in November. What tips and tricks can you offer us to make our lives a lot easier? For example, a friend of mine swears that putting a crying baby in front of a mirror will cause it to stop. Another uses noise cancelling headphones to temper the noise from his shrieking child. I am looking for hacks on everything from diaper changing to stroller modifications. Make our lives easier as we enter into parenthood.

Is it the fog from getting older, or is it something else?
As I've gone through the years (late 30s), I can clearly feel myself getting less brainy... by that, I mean that I'm not putting together things as quickly as I once did. I'm also less creative, and overall, I feel less verbose and articulate.
I've had some really stressful years, both workwise and otherwise. I don't *think* I'm depressed or overly anxious (in our 30s, we all have a bit of the anxiety, right?).
So, is this normal? Do others have the same "brain fog?" If you do, shout it out. If you did, and you fixed it, I'd love to hear your secrets.

Does anyone know how to change the screen position of the Bezel interface in Quicksilver. I have a dual-monitor setup and I'd rather move it to one screen or the other (which is available with Cube or Primer.) If its in the center of the screen and there are three panes displayed, the center one is difficult to see.

I heard that there is a way to call a fax machine with a normal telephone, press some keys and the fax machine will speak back your line quality as a number. I can't find any information about this online, does anyone know how to do this? Is this manufacturer dependent?

Here's my idea: I am working on a project that requires me to write 1,000 words a day. As a motivator, I want to have a BIG display that counts down the number of words I have left to go. My first idea was to have an LED display, clock radio style, attached via USB that would somehow retrieve the native count from MS Word and display it (in reverse, since word counts up - but a countup clock might also be OK.)
Ideas on that would be great, but it also seems quite hard - so I thought maybe an Applescript that would simulate the display on my monitor would work.
How to do this, I have no clue.

Could a vocoder be used to imitate some elses voice? If you had a recording of someone speaking, could you make a sample of their "carrier" sound and modulate it with your own voice? You would have to vary the pitch of the carrier to sound like normal speech, but assuming you could do that (a big if, I know), it would be fairly convicing no?

I've finally noticed and started enjoying the digital music channels that came with my DirecTV setup. But it's kind of silly to use my home theater system and DirecTV receiver just to hear some music. Anyone know of the best way to take screenshots of video on a PC? I notice that DVDs and mpegs and avis all seem to do a weird matte screen thing where video is projected "above" the video player on your screen, so all screengrabs are blank. There must be a hack to get a simple grab every now and then off this sort of video. Anyone ever figure this out?

DVRFilter: I just picked up a TiVo TCD540040 and am [predictably] madly in love with it. I also have a 250GB EIDE drive laying around, and can figure no better use than upgrading this baby. I have read this great tutorial, but I have a problem -- my PC/Linux box died a great death a number of months ago, and now I have only my PowerBook (as well as a FireWire disk enclosure I could put the drive into). Have I any options for getting the TiVo to recognize the extra 250GB drive, without hunting down a friend with a PC and a spare drive bay?

I have a legit movie produced by my employer on DVD that I need to convert to mpeg (mpeg2 I'm guessing) to upload to the Internet Archive. All the l33t warez converters seem to do divx or vcd or vob. I can't seem to find anything on mac or windows that will do this simple task for me. I just want the 10 minute long movie at track 4 on the disc as a mpeg file. Sounds simple but after using half a dozen apps, I can't seem to get the job done.

Amazon question. I once read the Amazon Hacks book but I don't remember if it covers this one, or how to do it. I'd like to be able to link to specific items in my wishlist. I've found one trick but it relies on the item number. Since this number changes each time the wishlist is updated, any link made this way won't last long. SMI

OK, so my fiance just started med school 2000+ miles away from where I live. To stay in touch and keep our phone bills reasonable, we both got iChat AV cameras for our powerbooks. However, the neccesary ports (16384 to 16403) are not open on her school network. We contacted her IT department and a week later, the guy told her that he couldn't open those ports for security/bandwidth issues, leaving us high and dry. So, what would folks suggest we do in this situation? Is it really a security issue or just bandwidth? Are there any workarounds?

Win XP pword issue. I'm locked out of my laptop. I don't use it often, and the password expired - it was set to 30 days. Being an idiot, I didn't make written note of the admin password anywhere. Multiple guesses have so far yielded me nothing. I found this site but haven't tried it yet, since I have no access to the Win 2000 cd.
Anyone know how to get in w/o losing all my data and reformatting/re-imaging the thing?

Should I go with the software hack? Is there ways to hack the Xbox without resorting to using a pinout to plug a USB device into the controller? Who here hacks their Xbox?
