Gym swimming logistics?

I just joined a local gym with a lap pool and I'd like to start swimming regularly again. What's the usual logistics routine for people that swim at a gym? Obviously I'll be bringing a change of clothes and a towel, but how should I deal with the wet towel and wet swim trunks afterwards? Any general tips from experienced gym swimmers?

Bench Press and Injury?

What exercise should I substitute for Bench Press if I'm concerned about injury? So many people have nagging shoulder problems that started when they were bench pressing. I'm an older guy and I really need to stay injury free, even if that means I end up making slower progress. Should I bench press using dumbbells instead? That would make linear progression harder, as the weight increments aren't as small. I've tried using incline bench press with the barbell as a substitute, but that seems to interfere with my progress on overhead press. At the moment, I'm using a plate-loaded bench press machine, and that has worked well, but I wonder if I'd be better off using a free weight exercise? Thanks.

Conundrum about working out preferences

What can I do at the gym that would mimic Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred? I like the idea of an intense, well-rounded program (abs, strength and cardio) that I can do every day, but I don't see myself bringing in my ipad to the gym and taking over a classroom. I tried this at home like you're supposed to but there aren't any suitable spaces in my apartment. I had a phase where I went to the gym and did the elliptical for awhile but I liked how this program was more well-rounded yet compact. Also I don't want to shell out for a trainer. Please advise..

What exercises can someone with cervical disc herniation (c3-c6) do?

After a nightmare MRI experience sometime in 2011 I found out that I have a cervical disc herniation on c3, c4, c5, c6. The pain was so severe that I was unable to move my neck to right side without feeling like I was going to pass out. Now that I've gotten my first coritsone shot and feel alive, I would love to work at gym on strentheting my cervical discs so I can beat this problem and avoid having to marry cortisone shots for the rest of my life. What are some excercise machines and workouts I can safely use to strengthen my neck without damaging it further? [more inside]

Yet another workout app question

GymAppFilter: My trainer made me a sort of mix-and-match table of exercises so that I can work out on my own. Basically, I pick one exercise each from 2 or 3 columns, do them in a circuit 3 times. Then pick more exercises. There are about 5-6 exercises in each column. I have Cardio, Legs, Arms, Abs/Core, Chest, Shoulders. Cardio can go with anything. The Shoulder stuff also involves Legs and Chest also (lunges with presses, for example), so he recommended I not pair Legs with Shoulders and Chest. Everything else can go together. [more inside]

How does a 20 yr old healthyish student get back in shape without dying?

The fact I never liked the "traditional" forms of exercise never bothered me before. That is, until it recently dawned on me activities like going to the gym or running might be the only options I have left. But, with sensitive knees and shins from growing quickly and the residual effects of childhood asthma still occasionally inhibiting my ability to do cardio, these activities seem more foreign than ever. What can I do? [more inside]

Well, here's a question I'd never thought I'd ask...

I just had a bit of a "due to winter dryness" nosebleed. (In my boss's office during a meeting so at least tissues were there and she's a mom of two boys, so this did not phase her.) It went on for a bit (maybe took like 10 min to clear up completely) but seems ok now. My question is: I normally go to the gym Tues and Thurs for at least 30 min. I don't want to end up passed out on the gym floor with blood running out of my face if I can help it. [more inside]

Help Me Put Exercise In My Exercise So I Can Workout While I Workout

Thanks to following the advice from some previous AskMeFi threads, I have finally gotten back into a regular workout routine. I am still working to find a set of exercises I can alternate between that make the best use of the time I have and that I do not dread doing. I've found that I really appreciate exercises that work multiple parts of the body simultaneously (I think it keeps me from focusing on how unpleasant the strain on any one body part is), especially ones that work my core without having to do situps. For example, squats combined with overhead press. Googling hasn't been that fruitful. What are some other exercises or combination of exercises that I can use to maximize my workout? I do not have a gym membership, but I have a good set of free weights and resistance bands at my disposal.

Why do non-swimmers hang out by the pool at my gym?

I can't believe I'm wasting my question on this, but I've been wondering about it for months. So at my gym, there is a "wet area" with a lap pool, a sauna, a steam room and a jacuzzi. What puzzles me is that there are people (usually men) who sit for long periods of time on the bench in the wet area. Some of them are still in their gym clothes, which makes me think they're not, like, taking intervals between sauna and steam or whatever. They definitely do not swim. They just sit there on the bench. [more inside]

Where around Cambrigdge, MA to aquire a better physique.

For the longest time I have been doing some kind of lifting or mild strength training (benching or pushups, curls, etc. mostly free weights) and am in fairly decent but skinny shape. At the moment I am regularly running 5 to 8 miles every other day and, without access to a gym, doing my darnedest to wing it with the free weights I have and pushups. I am looking to put on a good amount of muscle and am willing to put in the time and effort if I can find an approachable and worthwhile gym. Some googling suggests Total Performance Sports might be worth a look. I am a male in my 20s and I'm hoping to do a couple weeks of personal training to help get a routine down. Any suggestions, Hivemind?

Any downside to a combination cardio and strength workout?

Any downside to a combination cardio and strength workout? I have started doing combination cardio-strength workouts at my gym. A typical workout goes like this: 10-15 minutes on the treadmill, then I immediately do strength exercises, with no downtime between sets. For example, I’ll do a set of pull-ups, then straight to a set of chest fly on a machine, then a set of dips, then a set of ab crunches, then a set of shoulder presses on a machine, then back to the pull-ups, and the cycle repeats (though I often mix up the order depending on the availability of machines, and my mood). Working out for advanced beginners

I've been working out for about two months with a personal trainer. She started off having me do full body workouts that I quite enjoyed - they were sort of boot camp style, in that it was a combination of strength and cardio (ie. lots of burpees and mountain climbers and planks, mixed in with compound strength bearing exercises.) Much to my surprise i have gotten much fitter than I've ever been before, pretty quickly. Now my trainer is transitioning me to workouts that alternate upper body and lower body each day, with more of a focus on strength vs cardio. Is this better? [more inside]

I want to take a walk up the street and find a place like the YMCA.

I've been thinking of joining a gym for the first time in my life, primarily because I live alone and work from home and it would be good for me to have a place to go to be around other people once a day. So, I am looking for a gym to join. I just checked out the one nearest me tonight but was discouraged by the fact that the facilities seemed dirty and smelly and crowded. Buffed Toronto Mefites, what gyms can you recommend for someone who lives in west end Toronto (between Lansdowne and Dundas West subway stations), and wants a convenient, clean, and inexpensive gym to join? I'd like to do weights and the occasional exercise class in whatever (pilates, yoga, or kickboxing are all fine). I'd love to be able to swim too, but realize that isn't compatible with inexpensive.
