Why strength training, and what to do? I've been taking advantage of my free gym membership a lot more lately and I see people lifting weights a lot. I do the elliptical and the "Nautilus"-type machines, but I've gotten the impression that the barbell-style stuff is better for me. Is this true, and if so, how do I go about this? [more inside]

I have literally (yes, literally) never stepped foot in a paid gym in my life. I'm a 27-year-old male, who (despite being almost rail-thin) is only "in shape" enough to bike-sprint the 1.7 miles to work, then back in the evening. It's time to change that, so I signed up for the small, limited (cheap!) gym on campus. Other than "get the professional help of a personal trainer", what should I do there? [more inside]

You were bullied as a child, especially in gym class. You protected yourself from the mocking by being invisible and dropping those classes as soon as possible. You were embarrassed and afraid if people noticed the way you run or move. You didn't learn to dance because of this shame. I am a chubby (5'6", sz 14-16), out-of-shape lady living in thin-and-super-fit New York City. I want to lose weight and get back in shape, and I would like to do that by going to exercise classes — zumba, yoga, spinning, pilates, boxing, whatever — but I don't want to go to a class that's going to make me feel like crap about my weight. I'm a 24 year old guy who's very skinny and has never really worked out. However, by virtue of sitting behind a desk every day for the last couple years, I've developed some stomach flab. Besides that, though, still skinny as can be.
I want to join a gym to accomplish a few things:
- lose the stomach flab
- get slightly bigger / more muscular elsewhere (tough since I'm so skinny…main area I'd like to improve are my arms)
- get some stamina
From what I know, the stamina part will come through cardio, but that'll burn a lot of calories and go against the whole 'getting bigger' idea. Would love for those with knowledge or experience to give me some ideas of what to do…machines to use, exercises to try, etc.

Under the instruction of a personal trainer I strained my rotator cuff. A couple family members said that one of the reasons of having a personal trainer is avoiding this kind of thing and that I should find a different one.
I'd never worked out or used equipment in a gym. The personal trainer was aware of that. He had me doing dips on a piece of equipment that kept my legs up and in front of me. I was definitely straining, he was pushing me to keep going and then my muscles gave out and I dropped. It didn't hurt right away, it was several hours later that the pain came so we continued the regimen. This was my third session, second working upper body.
Should I get a different personal trainer or is this just something that happens and can be brushed off?

What should I eat before and after going to the gym? My priorities are food that (1) won't make me feel like throwing up if eaten before an intense workout, (2) is nutritious and beneficial for a weight-training/cardio improvement regime, and (3) is inexpensive. Specific requirements inside. [more inside]
I wake up in the morning at 6am and walk 2km (1.2 miles) to the gym and back five days a week. My workouts last 45 minutes and are aimed at sculpting, working on a body part per day (back, shoulders, chest, arms and legs). I weigh 100kg (220 pounds) and am 180cm (5.9 feet). I want to weigh 85kg (185 pounds). What and when should I eat to loose weight and gain maximum muscle mass? and how long should it take for me to loose this weight?
