I'm thinking about getting back to playing guitar after a decade. I never got past the basics the first time around, so I've always wondered about two things: how do experienced guitar players fundamentally see and "know" their instrument (especially where everything is on the fretboard), and what motivated them to keep practicing when they were newbies?

Calling all guitar players: Looking for popular songs that can easily be played and sung by a single person with an acoustic guitar without losing too much. Basically, the kind of songs you can put in a set list where people's reactions are to immediately say, "Hey, I really like that song," followed immediately by "and hey, that sounds pretty close to the original too!"
Also, very important: Any song should be playable by a *
mediocre* guitar player.

Emmylou Harris ordinarily uses a Gibson acoustic guitar, but on some songs (notably The Pearl) she uses a crazy guitar with its lowest string lifted off the fretboard as a drone. Who makes it?
Here is a (mesmerizing)
video of her playing The Pearl
And here is a
photo of her playing it. (The pic shows the luthier's mark on the headstock, but I do not recognize it).

Name that song: from
This American Life 149, about 29 minutes in. It sounds like an electric guitar cover of The Beach Boys' "In My Room", but it has no vocals, and doesn't sound like the cover by Grant Lee Buffalo.

What are some of the best resources on the electric guitar? Any medium is welcome: books, videos, articles, etc. Money is not an issue; if there's a really good reference that costs thousands of dollars, I'd like to know about it. Collectively, I'd like these resources to cover everything a professional electric guitarist would need to know, from technique (basic and advanced) to related tech (amps, effects units, etc.) to guitar maintenance. Thank you!

I"m about to paint a electric guitar body. It's completely stripped of hardware and paint, and has been sanded. I'm going to use acrylics or enamels. Should I put down a primer before starting on the colors? Or something else to seal the raw wood ,like a clear varnish? If so, what kind of primer would be good for wood? I know that I"ll need to do a few layers of varnish/lacquer after the paints have dried , but I'm wondering about the undercoating primer.
And if someone has a recommendation for paints, please tell me. I'm painting a multiple color "scene" not just a flat overall body color. Thanks.
