I am a soon-to-be high school senior interested in Java programming. I bought the Core Java Volume 1 book authored by Sun engineers. I believe I have unzipped, or decompressed, however it's said, the Library Source Code and Documentation using the command line. However, when I look at the folders using the GUI, the folder says it's still zipped. I'm a complete newbie at this who just recently learned about the existence of the command and read a little about how to use it on the internet. Can somebody help me?

I just watched the Angels & Demons movie starring Tom Hanks. The first part takes place at the CERN collider, and shows many very cool and stylish computer graphics on the screens of the operators. Where can I find more about these GUIs? Are they real, or just movie glitz?

I am looking for a varient of Rogue/Nethack/Slash'em/Angband/Whatever with a GUI. I don't want the fancy 3d Falcon's eye. I would prefer tiled, but its not necessary. I have been playing Powder on my DS and PC over the last few days (after coming across it via the latest "What can I do with my DS thread"), and its exactly what I want, but I feel its lacking in depth. Visual Studio for the confused: I've inherited a C#/ASPX Net 1.1 application from what appears to have been some fairly low-skill software developers. The language, systems environment, and cleaning up the software itself aren't problems, but what the hell am I supposed to do with all this IDE stuff? I need learning resources. [more inside]

Is it possible to trim Vista Breadcrumb sections so that the breadcrumb bar doesn't clip off most of the path in long titles? I.e. anything over say, 10 characters gets cropped, so that long paths can be shown? Also, is there a way to fix the glitchy second row of tabs in firefox? I want the second row of tabs to have the same height as the first, so that graphics don't go all screwy.

How can I change the default size for the "show all" window of a spotlight search in Leopard (Mac OS 10.5.2)? It always opens a window that is way too small, and unlike Finder windows, it's so dynamic that I can't seem to retain any changes to size from one search to the next. Help!

In OS X, if you select a series of files in a folder and paste them into a text editor (say, BBEdit) the order of the filenames seems completely random. Why doesn't it just paste a list of the filenames in the order in which they appear in the folder (or in the order they were selected)? And is there any way to get this result using the Finder (i.e. without going into Terminal and using ls)?

I'm looking for examples of awesome-looking information displays. This can be anything from interesting OSs, "command center" control displays, and information software that is graphically impressive in its visual design. An information screen/program that makes you go "wow" on looks alone, whether public or proprietary. Any screenshots? I hope I'm describing this right.

Why do Macs and Unix GUI's seem to display graphics better than a Windows OS? Just the default backgrounds and such that are included, not any photos or anything. They seem to have more depth or are more crisp, or something. I've talked to a few co-workers about this and they all seem to agree, but don't have any answers. Is this an optical illusion, am I just seeing things?
