Why do linux GUIs look like they do? (like shit)

I've got some old laptops I want to breathe new life into by installing linux on them and choosing a performant window manager. Whether its GNOME or KDE or any other GUI though, theres something very je ne sais quoi about the way they look that I can't get over. Even ubuntu's unity interface has it.. I can't quite put my finger on what it is exactly. Its the way the text looks, the way the buttons and windows look.. menus.. its kind of everything. Does anyone know what I mean? help me understand what it is exactly i'm referring to.. in other words, why can mac os and windows look so slick but linux always kind of looks like shit?

How to distribute a python Tkinter GUI from one Mac to another

I've been writing python software with Tkinter GUIs as a hobby for a while, but for the first time, I've made a some pieces of code that a few other people want to use. Unfortunately, I've been really frustrated by attempts to distribute the software because of incompatibility with Tcl/Tk installations on computers I'm distributing the software to. I'm on a Mac, and I'm distributing to other Macs at this point. [more inside]

How do I use the command line?

I am a soon-to-be high school senior interested in Java programming. I bought the Core Java Volume 1 book authored by Sun engineers. I believe I have unzipped, or decompressed, however it's said, the Library Source Code and Documentation using the command line. However, when I look at the folders using the GUI, the folder says it's still zipped. I'm a complete newbie at this who just recently learned about the existence of the command and read a little about how to use it on the internet. Can somebody help me?

configuration of vista breadcrumb bar/firefox second tab row

Is it possible to trim Vista Breadcrumb sections so that the breadcrumb bar doesn't clip off most of the path in long titles? I.e. anything over say, 10 characters gets cropped, so that long paths can be shown? Also, is there a way to fix the glitchy second row of tabs in firefox? I want the second row of tabs to have the same height as the first, so that graphics don't go all screwy.

OS X: copy/paste filenames

In OS X, if you select a series of files in a folder and paste them into a text editor (say, BBEdit) the order of the filenames seems completely random. Why doesn't it just paste a list of the filenames in the order in which they appear in the folder (or in the order they were selected)? And is there any way to get this result using the Finder (i.e. without going into Terminal and using ls)?
