Do drill brushes really work for shower scum/mildew?

So, the shower grout is getting very mildewy despite my best attempts to clean, scrub, brush, etc. The bathroom is not ventilated particularly well, which only compounds the problem. I've seen these amazing "Drill Brushes, advertising effortless, "manly" cleaning. Do they actually work? Will it clean the grout without damaging the tiles? Has anyone tried one?

Grout: the biggest mystery of housekeeping.

Recently I've tried using Clorox toilet bowl cleaner with bleach and then (yesterday) just straight laundry bleach to clean my floor grout. Neither had impressive results. Now I have some Zep, which contains hydrochloric acid. If I use this today and there is still bleach residue on the floor (I did mop with water), might I poison myself via a chemical reaction? The area is decently ventilated.

Please help me fix my bathtub

We had our bathroom completely renovated 2 years ago. A couple of issues have gradually developed, that I don't think are serious enough to call in the contractor to repair, and I'm happy to do the work myself if it's easy enough, so I'm looking for advice on how best to proceed. [more inside]

Help me clean my old gross quarry tile

I recently moved into an older apartment with many quirks and charms. The floor is not one of them. It's quarry tile, like you find in restaurant kitchens, and it is disgusting. At one point it had been sealed or varnished, and the sealant is now peeling off. The grey grout looks like someone mashed dirt into it even after it's been scrubbed with Comet. Help! [more inside]

Something cool to look at when I forgot my book

What color grout should I use? I'm using these hexagonal tiles in our bathroom, and we're about to grout them, but I'm not sure if I should use black, white, or grey grout. Which color might best highlight the tile shape and pattern? I'm leaning toward black or a dark grey, but haven't seen it used on these tiles before. Any experience with a dark grout?

How to waterproof my shower cheap?

My tiled shower walls are water permeable, and it is messing up the adjacent drywall. Two tile guys agree - is a design issue, and re-grouting will not fix. Would cost a small fortune to fix right. I am redoing bathroom in five years or so, but for now, I need cheap waterproofness. What can I do to my walls that will keep water out? [more inside]

Any way to get grout residue off of hardwood?

Any tips for getting grout residue off of hardwood floors? Some previous owners of my house had carpeting in the living room, and tiles that they placed around the fireplace hearth (tiles were 1/4" thick and brick-like, in case anyone cares). I removed the carpet and the tiles to reveal the hardwood floors underneath, which is in fairly good shape in most areas. Except right around the fireplace where some white residue remains from where the tiles were. Is there anyway to reduce or remove this completely other than refinishing? Or should I just put an area rug over it until that time comes? [more inside]

Grout cleaning in NYC

I live in a small NYC East Village apartment. I have very bad grout in the kitchen and bathroom. I don't have a problem doing maintenance on it myself, but think it wise to have it done professionally first. How much can I expect to pay, and how can I find a decent service?
