Why aren't there any national grocery chains in America? They all seem to be regional.

25 and TRYING to COOK

I'm 25 and starting to cook - What? Where do I get it? Why? I'm 25 and me and my roommate are just starting to cook on our own. Our add water and microwave days of college are over. Plus we like to have friends over sometimes, and ordering a pizza makes for a lame dinner party.

Basically this just feels like something we should be doing, it's fun to try new things and in general, it saves money!

Some things I always liked growing up:

• Big Mac 'N Cheese fan
• Anything with Cool Whip...
• Mom makes this breaded chicken that got baked...
• Love salads, been trying to broaden my horizon in terms of dressing

I also always struggle with whether to buy the brand names or the store labels. Does it make a difference?!?! What do you guys buy and why?

Anyway.... I'd love to hear your ideas. I'd love some new easy recipes, but I'm really curious about the art of grocery shopping too. Discount store? Upscale store?

Okay, s I saw this video on the CNN site a few hours ago. The newscasters go on about it being a dog that was shoplifting, but I think it was a coyote. Any mefi out there know more about coyotes care to make a positive id?

What's your secret tip for saving money at the grocery store? Even when we plan out meals for the week, the girlfriend and I always end up spending a lot more money than we'd like. We eat moderately healthy, love cooking, and pick easy to medium (in skill level required to make) dishes to prepare.

What's your trick for staying cheap and healthy at the grocery store? Looking for ideas beyond coupon clipping.

(Kind of like this question, only for food only (and not just websites!)

How does self-checkout work?

When I go through self-checkout at HEB grocery store and forget the code for a vegetable, I can press identify and the machine can tell what vegetable it is. I'm curious what technology is used to do this. I don't think it is just someone nearby pressing a code, because I've watched and no one is looking my way. Thanks!

PlasticsFilter: When, exactly, did milk start coming in plastic gallon jugs? I'd like as specific an answer as possible, but anecdotal stories are also welcome. I've emailed the American Plastics Council, and though they've provided me with many helpful links, none of them actually answered my question.

What year was the plastic gallon milk jug introduced? How quickly did it catch on? Did all grocery stores stock them right away? By what year was EVERYONE buying their milk in plasic jugs? When do YOU remember buying your first plastic gallon of milk?

Can anyone recommend a good fresh seafood market in northern Virginia? Does such an animal exist? The counters at the local grocery stores are awful here (not that they are ever great).
