Do I want to live in Manhattan?

New Yorkers - do I want to move to Greenwich Village? I'm currently living in Brooklyn (Park Slope) and am considering taking a room in the West Village. Since I moved to NYC, I've found myself thinking that I'd like to live in Manhattan, but now that I'm actually in a position to do so, am still a little nervous of committing to it. Sure, I can move if I don't like it, but I'd really rather not for awhile if I can avoid it. I've visited the neighborhood and like it, but walking around the place and actually living there are very distinct things, of course. Can anyone offer any insight on living in Greenwich Village or, failing that, on the transition from Brooklyn (or anywhere) to Manhattan life? What should I prepare myself for? Things you wish you would have considered before making the plunge? How would you characterize the Village and people who live there? FWIW, I'm a 25/f in grad school and working in the arts.

Where to go for New Years in New York?

My girlfriend and I are visiting New York City on New Years Eve and want to have a memorable night. We preferably don't want to spend more than $200 each and would like something suitable for young professionals, not getting too drunk, not too loud (!) and comes with a seat! More info: We're staying in the West Village. We've found things such as this, this and this but aren't sure if they're worth it. We're not fussed about celebrity spotting - just having a good time with other good people.

nyc walking tour

Can you help me plan a little NYC walking tour? What's the most interesting, scenic, and fun way to walk from Greenwich Village to Chinatown, and what are some places we shouldn't miss? I'm going to be in NYC for the day with friends tomorrow. They've never been there. They want to see GV, SoHo, Little Italy, and Chinatown. I know they're all more or less "in a row", but what streets specifically should we walk along? Where are the best shops and galleries and interesting things to look at in SoHo, and where's the best place to have lunch in Little Italy? A cafe that served great coffee and cannoli would be nice, too. I want to end up at Grand and Bowery in Chinatown to buy durian to take home with me, so assume we're starting somewhere around NYU and want to end up in Chinatown.
