The Innocents Abroad: Text Messaging+Parents Overseas=Disaster Incoming?

My elderly parents are currently traveling in Europe (Greece, specifically) accompanied by their first smartphones (which are on a T-Mobile family plan that I pay for). Before they left, I repeatedly emphasized that they needed to install new microsims from a Greek telecom before they'd be able to use voice, messaging and data in Greece. I did not go into the concept of international roaming (primarily because it's extremely expensive, they would find it confusing, and I don't want them to use it). They said they'd get new microsims when they arrived. However, my mother's text messages from Greece still look like they're being sent from her U.S. number. [more inside]

Ancient greek origins of separation of powers?

Somewhere I read an interpretation of the development of democracy in Ancient Greece that went something like this: A king died and three princes struggled to seize power. No one prince was strong enough to defeat the others. They made a deal that one would be responsible for military matters, the second for administrative matters, and the third for religious. This system proved relatively effective and was continued, eventually on a non-hereditary basis, and is the original source for the separation of powers between different branches of government. Remember this book? It's about a girl who goes to Greece and something happens to her.

Identify-a-book-filter: I'm trying to remember a children's/young adult book that I likely read 15-20 years ago in Australia. It was about a ~13 year old girl who went to a Greek island with her archaelogist parents (for a year/the summer?) and something magicky happened. [more inside]

Greek and Greek-related (even *super-vaguely* Greek-related&mdashlike songs from "Grease") music suggestions needed!

My friends have a themed New Year's Eve dinner party every year, and I'm in charge of putting together the background music mix. Work in Patmos for a month?

Hi I'm considering remote working from Patmos or another Greek Island for a month or so either in spring or late summer. I hear from Negroponte's initiative the island has free wifi -- what's coverage like? Does anyone else know of a sweet spot of affordable + great internet connectivity in Greece? Free isn't necessary; reasonable is. If so, recommendations for sites offering short term apartment rentals in your recommended area would be most awesome! Let's say, 4-6 weeks.

What's going on with Greece capping the amount of cash one can spend?

From a Reuters newsreport about Greece's government response plan to their economic meltdown: "From 1. Jan. 2011, every transaction above 1,500 euros between natural persons and businesses, or between businesses, will not be considered legal if it is done in cash. Transactions will have to be done through debit or credit cards" Are they doing this for any other reason than making it easier to collect a sales tax? How can they enforce it? What will happen if someone pays for an item with over 1500 euros in cash, will someone repossess it? Have other countries done something like this?

Greece [Athens/Ios] - what should I absolutely do or see?

So I'm heading to the island of Ios with friends in late august. Our plans mostly involve drinking and beaches, but I'm wondering what I should check out before/after the island, in Athens or otherwise on the mainland. Bonus points for interesting things that aren't complete tourist traps, of course - I'm naturally going to go see the Acropolis, and am resigned to the multi-hour line-up for it, but would rather avoid such for anything else. Also I'm going through the Pimsleur Greek course, so Greek-only attractions will (hopefully) be fine by the time I get there.

And, naturally, I'd be pretty psyched to meet any MeFi people on Ios or the mainland. I promise I'm not crazy!
