How can two Seattle residents best go about looking for jobs in London?

How can two Seattle residents best go about looking for jobs in London? My wife and I have been talking about moving to London for a while. Ideally, we'd like to both find jobs in London, live there for 2-3 years, then move back to the U.S.

We would like to have jobs and be living in London 1 year from today. We love Seattle... we just want an adventure before we have a baby.

- What has been your experience with finding (or not finding) a job in London?
- What should we expect with regard to potential time lines, snags, red tape, and pitfalls?
- What tools to job searching/networking have you found useful?
- What government agencies/government connections did you use in your quest? (i.e. if your Senator/Congressman was a good friend, could he/she help speed things along, side-step hang-up, and/or
- We want to live in London... not a 1-hour Tube ride from Central London.
- What have I not asked that I need to know?

Our employment backgrounds:
She is 26, I am 28. My background is business (primarily sales & marketing) and I've been fairly successful, despite my age. Her background is architecture, though she's looking to switch her focus to humanitarian efforts. Potentially working with organizations as a project manager for different efforts.

Our current combined income: $105,000/year (pre-tax)

I want to hear this broadcast again!

About ten days ago I was listening to NPR in my car (KPCC in Pasadena, to be specific) and heard a hysterical piece on Great Britain's success at the Olympics. Help me find it! A British columnist(?) was stating with great humor that most Olympics sports were in invented in England but somehow the Brits have become terrible at them. As a result they've striven to become the world's best losers. The recent downpour of gold medals came as a shock and the columnist wanted to apologize to the other nations for their success.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? NPR has a great archive but I just can't find this broadcast! Help!

Driving on the Wrong Side with the Wind in my Hair

Looking for great scenic and historic drives in England, the wind whipping my hair as I wind through cottages and countryside. Thus far, The guidebooks and my google-fu are failing me. I'll be in England with a convertible I am looking for some great scenic and/or historic drives.

I have some flexibility but I will be based in around Oxford, so it can't be anything too remote (No Scotland, Northumbria, Lake District or Yorkshire). I will also be in Wales for a little while. It's not hard to find great American drives on the web or in guidebooks, and I'd like to find a parallel listing for British ones.

Oh, and I've been to the Cotswolds before, but any specifically great itineraries would be welcome.

Oxford: Parking for myself and a car?

Oxford UK: Want to know where I can park myself at an inexpensive B&B and my car.
(There is an older AskMe B&B Oxford question, but it is two years old.)

Looking for an inexpensive B&B for myself --as a student I always liked the cheap ones where I got to stay with an "old" couple whose kids had moved out or somesuch. Needn't be in city centre, but I would like it to be no more than a half hour by foot, bus, train or car.

As for the car, I know this is somewhat dependent on where I lodge, but will I be ticketed without a permit for street parking? How is parking generally in Oxford? Are daily or weekly car parks available for a reasonable rate?

Politics in a strange land

Intern or working for a foreign political party Here's the thing: I'm a political professional. I currently live in Denver, and I've worked, in both a paid and volunteer capacity, in politics for the better part of two decades.

What I'd like to do is possibly do political work in a foreign country. My preference is for Canada or the UK, but as I know Spanish, I can work in Latin American countries as well.

So--how do I do that? Any clues, O Hive Mind?

How do I find Parliamentary debates on Northern Ireland?

GoogleFuFailureFilter: I am looking for free transcripts of UK (Westminster) Parliamentary debates for around 1969-1980. Specifically, I'm looking for discussions about Northern Ireland. Astonishingly, I can't find them after a full day of looking, not even on the Westminster website, which seems only to go back as far as 1988. How is this possible? Help!

I have a 16 year old daughter traveling from Newark Airport to London Gatwick on Sunday ... -- her first trip alone -- to stay with family friends in Brighton for two weeks. Given this morning's news, should I let her go? How freaked out am I?

Things to do on the Lizard Peninsula.

Things to do on the Lizard Peninsula. (More inside) A friend and I are holidaying in Helston, Cornwall next week. We have four days covered doing the Lizard section of the South-West Coastal Walk, but I'm looking for ideas on how to spend the rest of the time. We tentatively plan to visit the Eden Project, but I'm somewhat concerned about crowds and queues given that it's the school holidays. Anyone have any experience of visiting during the summer? Also any other tips on Helston and it's surrounds? Things to do indoors if the Great British Summer deteriorates once more? (we have sitting in the pub drinking beer covered). Good eateries with a decent vegetarian menu? Preferably (though not essentially) reachable by public transport from Helston.

Moving to the UK

I am a dual Canadian-UK citizen who has not resided in Britain for more than fifteen years. This autumn, I will be returning to live in the UK. What should I do for travel insurance, and are there any other bureaucratic hoops I should be jumping through? [more inside] Some cogent details:

* I've already picked up a new British passport.

* I do not know where I will be settling. My plan is to fly over at the end of September and travel the E.U. for a few months, returning in January to wherever it is I liked best. What is certain, however, is that I will be remaining in Europe (and almost definitely the UK).

* I want to ensure that my flight, as well as my health, are insured.

* I'm thinking that while in the UK I'll be ok - my passport should entitle me to emergency health stuff, especially if I register with a random doctor when I arrive. But when I'm elsewhere in Europe, I'm not sure if I need insurance, or whether my E.U. citizenship is good enough.

* The stickler is what I need to do to be understood as a "resident," according to different peoples' definitions.

* I have yet to find a travel insurance company that will insure me, given that I'm only buying a one-way ticket to London.

If there's anyone out there who has made a similar transition, are there any further potholes I should be watching out for? Any further bureaucratic finagling I should be aware of? The British Consulate in Ottawa isn't being very forthcoming.

Thank-you!!

UK Educational Marine Life?

Finding more than Nemo: aided by innumerable viewings of Finding Nemo and the Little Mermaid, my three-year old's fascination with the aquatic world continues, fuelled by a lovely trip to the small-ish but very impressive Mote Marine Laboratory while in Florida a few months ago. However: we're in the UK, where - despite being surrounded by water - good quality aquariums seem rather thin on the ground (sic). Can anyone recommend good places of this kind (educational, subjects well looked after)? Is the London Aquarium good?
