Applying to grad school, not sure who to ask for the recommendation.

I am currently in the process of applying to grad school. I was counting on my former advisor (who wrote a glowing letter of support for me when applying for my previous job) to write me one, but am not getting a response. I would like suggestions on what to do/what other types of people qualify to write a graduate school recommendation. [more inside]

What 20/21 century literature classics do you recommend reading for GRE?

Hi everyone. I am an international student considering the option of going to the US to do my graduate studies. I am currently studying for the GRE. As I am not a native English speaker (Portuguese), the verbal section is really difficult for me because of the vocabulary. As I got bored of studying vocab flashcards, I am know thinking of reading a book with a great diversity of words. What recent books do you recommend reading? (remember that I am completely unaware of the what the best english literature may be)

this test best before MM-DD-YYYY

GRE scores are supposedly valid for five years after the testing year in which you tested. Such is the case with the GMAT and LSAT also. MCAT scores are valid for 2-3 years. My question is, has anyone ever had to retake a test because their scores were too old, even though the scores hadn't reached their "expiration date"? Has anyone encountered an academic / grad admissions department that encouraged a test retake because previous scores weren't fresh / recent enough? (Admitters and admittees are both welcome to respond.)

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood... and I took the one where I went crazy for a month to raise my score 40 points... and that uh... has made all the difference?

GRE-Filter: I was happy with my GRE scores. Then, I received word that I have the opportunity to get into a super-duper-top-tier doctoral program previously inaccessible. However, my Quantitative Score--while still in the range of accepted scores over the years for this program--is now less-than-stellar relatively speaking. Is it crazy to think I could study intensely for about a month and improve my score 30-50 points? Am I overthinking this? [more inside]

Should I retake the GREs?

I'm applying to grad school for a Masters in Library Science, and I'm unsure if I should re-take the GREs. I did very well on the Verbal and Quantitative sections - both scores were above the averages of accepted students for the MLS programs I'm looking at. But I only got a 4 on the writing section (putting me in the 41st percentile). The average for admitted students is around a 5. Will my admittedly poor showing on the writing section hurt me enough that I should take the GREs again? [more inside]

Can I get into grad school in math?

Can I get into a funded Math Master's or PhD program? I'm graduating from a 4-year college with my B.S. this Spring, and I'm in my mid-30's. I have good GPA at this school (about a 3.6, up to about a 3.8 in math courses specifically) and good GRE scores (720 V / 780 Q), but I have dropped a lot of courses (I've worked full time over the years while getting my degree), and back in the mid-90's I flunked out of the first university I went to. Can anyone recommend a good graduate school for Nutrition Major?

Hi, I only have 1 1/2 years till I'm completely done my undergraduate nutrition degree in Canada.
