What interactive maps have you seen that do a particularly good job illustrating an issue? I'm thinking about trying to put one together to illustrate a project I've been working on, which is loosely about policy changes, and I can't believe no one's done this before. This, from Newsweek, kinda gets it ... but I'm looking for other ideas.
What is a good source for high-quality 3D people for use in digital architectural models? Polygon count and cost are of no concern, while natural-looking faces, textures, and poses are a must. [more inside]

Illustrator CS3: How can I 'bend' an image around a sphere like this? I tried the steps here, but I cannot make the sphere invisible, so my shape is shown on a colored sphere. I don't want to see the sphere, just the perspective on the shape. Thanks.
What are some good online graphic design portolio services? Free is great but I don't mind paying for some quality either. I'm a broadcast designer so I have a lot of motion graphics to show. Thanks!

I am just finishing off a course in computer graphics (theory and programming, *not* graphics design). It is without a doubt the worst course with the worst prof (and textbook!) I have ever had. It completely killed the interest I had in computer graphics. Please point me to some well-written and paced resources (books/articles, not forums) that you would recommend to help me regain my interest in this fascinating field. (Not just OpenGL/DirectX primers, I am actually interested in theory as well)

I bought the ATI Sapphire HD 3870 a couple of months ago. I was especially stoked about the HDMI out feature that would allow me to play audio from my DVD receiver (Samsung HTQ80T/XAA). Well it does that but, the resolution is blurry. Changing the display quality on the pc doesn't help. My PC is connected to the HDMI IN on the receiver and the HDMI OUT on the receiver is connected to my monitor. DVD's look fine but the PC looks horrid. Not sure if it's the Home theater, or the card. Any Ideas as to what I can do about this? thanks.

This week an organization I work with is running a big, high energy (iPhone and Wii giveaways, the whole 9 yards) event geared towards high-school students. I'm tasked with organizing some of the creative/design aspects of it, but I've hit a few dead ends, specifically in the area of what I would call ambient video. [more inside]

My son, it turns out, is a genius with Flash animation, at least as far as his high school has allowed him to pursue it. He is very excited (and that means a lot in a teen!) about the idea of animation now that he is thinking about career plans for his future. What resources, advice, schools, courses, etc. can I give him to help him leverage his interest into a possible career path? We're in central Florida, if that means anything.
I'm beginning a project where I need to construct a 3D model based off the "average" shape (I'm not sure that's exactly the proper term) of a number of similar real-world objects, and I'm not sure on the best workflow or process. Example: I have 25 bananas and I want to create a 3D model based off the average shape of all these bananas. [more inside]

We can't boot into Windows XP, except in VGA mode, without the screen going black after the Windows XP "loading bar screen"; we can still hear everything, though. This is on an Intel iMac running Boot Camp, and the Mac side (Leopard) works fine, which leads me to believe this isn't a problem with hardware. [more inside]

I'm trying to find a CD with quality clipart / illustrations of nothing but the human digestive system. I've found a lot of CD's that offer general medical imagery, but nothing that has ONLY the digestive system. I've found some sites that offer individual images, but most of these are at least $200 per image. Anyone know of a cheaper source?

Is it possible to trim Vista Breadcrumb sections so that the breadcrumb bar doesn't clip off most of the path in long titles? I.e. anything over say, 10 characters gets cropped, so that long paths can be shown? Also, is there a way to fix the glitchy second row of tabs in firefox? I want the second row of tabs to have the same height as the first, so that graphics don't go all screwy.
When I build a spot gradient in Indesign or Illustrator I'm not getting exactly what I want. What I want: a very dark blue (say, PMS 2756) to black - with the blue getting darker and darker toward black. What I get on screen and on proof: the blue becoming a lighter gray, then the gray darkening toward black. I assume the solution rests in using a blue > nothing gradient in a layer above a blue > black and messing with overprinting / transparency but I'm unsure how to proceed. Any advice?
