I'm a graphics and multimedia artist working for the federal government who's always used Macs. It's again time for me to get a new system (laptop, please) and for the first time in my career I feel the need to explore my PC options (Apple has apparently abandoned its professional users). Unfortunately, I have no idea where to start looking. My new system needs to be commercially available from a vendor that can do business with the federal government. Building my own system is not an option. I perform a full range of creative functions including graphic design, video editing, photography and webcast hosting, so I need plenty of graphics power and fast processing. I don't, however, need a huge local storage capacity since I work off of our LAN.
Where do I start looking? Any recommendations on models and/or features?

Posting for my wife, a graphic designer who is tasked with doing a website layout job for a client. Here's the rub: The company has an existing logo that's red and blue, but she doesn't necessarily want to use red and blue as the dominant colors in this particular layout, but someone from the company is convinced that they MUST use red and blue as the primary colors throughout the site. I've had no luck coming up with any kind of evidence to support my wife's point, and so now I'm here to query the hive. Do any of you design-minded folks know of any articles or collections of layouts that might help my wife make her case? Sorry if the question is very vague.

I need a clear ruler with picas, points and line thicknesses on it, for measuring printed materials. I want it today. I'm in Australia and go shopping on the Gold Coast or Brisbane. The nearest thing I've found is at Officeworks
but the picture is too small to be able to tell if it's what I need and they appear to only sell it online. I'm willing to pay up to $100. Maybe more if it's super-duper.

I am looking for a high-res logo or a high-res scan of the Block Parent graphic of the adult holding the child's hand. If the "Block Parent" text is included then all the better.

I'm looking for a comic book series/graphic novel of a very dark world where the villains have taken over and the heroes (who were clearly analogs of very well known Marvel and DC characters with relatively minor shifts in their names/powers/costumes/etc. ) were being hunted down. [more inside]

I'm interested in hiring an illustrator to turn a recently completed screenplay into a graphic novel. Any ideas/resources I can use to create a budget for such a project? I'm looking to come up with a ballpark figure which can be fine-tuned later. Where do I start? The story is set in Los Angeles and the desert Southwest. Any suggestions regarding potential illustrators from that part of the world would be appreciated.

Looking for a downloadable poster generator that was on the net around six or seven years ago. You selected a style and provided text and it used an algorithm to create a poster in the style that was "hip" at the time. Background images featured urbanscapes and the like which would have looked right at home on a WILCO album cover. I may have actually seen it here first. Does it still exist? Is there a Mac version of it? If not, anything else like it today?

I am trying to create a professional looking logo for a Web site. I am using GIMP but finding I am very limited in terms of what I can do with it. Is there a software package that I should be using that will allow me to create a good looking logo/header image? I understand Photoshop is the best however, it's really expensive (700.00). Are there any software alternatives or do I just have to pony up for Photoshop?
By the way, I have a PC.
