Posting for my wife, a graphic designer who is tasked with doing a website layout job for a client. Here's the rub: The company has an existing logo that's red and blue, but she doesn't necessarily want to use red and blue as the dominant colors in this particular layout, but someone from the company is convinced that they MUST use red and blue as the primary colors throughout the site. I've had no luck coming up with any kind of evidence to support my wife's point, and so now I'm here to query the hive. Do any of you design-minded folks know of any articles or collections of layouts that might help my wife make her case? Sorry if the question is very vague.

I'm a graphic designer, employed full-time with a marketing agency. Yesterday my boss said I have to take down examples of work I've done while at the agency. In trying to determine if I can legally show these samples, searching the web is providing conflicting info.
Things worth mentioning (a) My portfolio specifies that the work was done on behalf of my employer (b) I never signed anything restricting the use of these images and (c) The images are of works that have appeared in public (stores, events, etc).
Is there something "official" I can refer to that shows where the rights to these images lie, especially as they apply to a personal portfolio?

Graphic Designer asks: Can I use a laptop as my "main" computer? I've been a designer for 20+ years and have used every mac since the original, but I've always had a
desktop mac as my go-to machine. Now, it's upgrade time, and I'm thinking of using just a laptop for everything. More inside...

I need a clear ruler with picas, points and line thicknesses on it, for measuring printed materials. I want it today. I'm in Australia and go shopping on the Gold Coast or Brisbane. The nearest thing I've found is at
Officeworks but the picture is too small to be able to tell if it's what I need and they appear to only sell it online. I'm willing to pay up to $100. Maybe more if it's super-duper.

I want to start my own T-shirt company (i know I know. Don't roll your eyes). I am a graphic designer and would like to create shirts that are stylish. Basic screen printed shirts with sayings etc. While I know how to screen print I think my best bet is designing and then getting them printed through, well, an online shirt printing company. The trouble is most of them are very limited and have just the tacky crew neck shirt kind of thing. I don't want to do cafe press or zazzle style printing. So, What's a good company to go with? any suggestions? For example take a look at JacVanek.com Not crazy about her designs but her shirts are what I'm looking to print on. That urban outfitters style! Thanks!

An old friend recently came to me with a job offer. It's to design a few dozen graphics illustrating business concepts that will be put on flashcards. I have no formal graphic design experience -- I've never taken classes or courses -- but I'm talented enough and am fairly well-versed in digital painting. In all respects (money included!) this sounds like a really cool job for me, but I'm worried I won't be able to deliver. Should I take it anyway?

I work with a lot of teams who do concept development stuff for the web and for general interactive design. I'm always having to find visual references for our discussions and our present system of sharing is clunky and requires us to print stuff out all the time so that we can talk about stuff we like or don't like. This is pretty crazily wasteful as well as the fact that trying to convince graphic designers to get enthusiastic about a reference when they can't help fixating on the icky presentation format is getting annoying.
So, is there an easy and really nice looking app or programme for the Mac that allows you to save and illustrate pictures, web pages, articles and video in a browsable way? Ideally it would be something that was ipad compatible, if only because then it will have to be easily browsable in a visually attractive way. It would also be awesome if it allowed you to collaborate, so we could all contribute to a single place that would be awesome.

I have good drawing skills (especially pen and ink) but am an amateur artist. I would like to get into working with digital art etc perhaps even to the point as a side job or making a living. The bumps are that I cannot afford to go back to school and am not super tech-savvy (yet). I have basic skills in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator but that is it. Any ideas on where to go next? (I am so completely ignorant on the field taht I don't know what to call people who do this for a living.) Push come to shove, I could probably take a few classes a year, though after I save some money.
