Hi all, I am a graphic designer and have an interview with a large company next week. The HR person asked that I fill out a couple forms, bring my resume, printed portfolio... the usual. However, she also stated I should bring my laptop. [more inside]
I am helping a small non-profit which does almost everything wrong when it comes to visual design. There are very limited financial resources and I'm not a designer, just someone who knows the basics. I think I need to produce a simple style guide which can be used across multiple channels, but I also need someone to redesign the web site and I don't know what comes first. [more inside]
Although I studied graphic design in university, I never really learned how to deal with the business side of things. I understand there are plenty of resources for how to create a quote or an invoice, but I want to learn how to deal with the little nuts and bolts involved in the project, namely typefaces. unexpectedly landed my "dream job". It's for something I've been a fan of for a while and very specific and is a kind of once in a lifetime random job opportunity. Here's the catch. It's freelance, I have a full time job already and there wasn't supposed to be any pay. After a call with my new boss, she suggested that because of my experience, we should discuss a pay rate today. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO EVEN ASK FOR. And google is not helping because they don't take into consideration that this is honestly something I'm so thrilled to work on that I would do it for free. My friend has a background in visual art (mainly years of oils, watercolors, some crafts) and has recently started exploring graphic design. So far she's done some projects for friends and family (website design, logos, packaging, card designing, etc). She'd love to do more of this kind of work on a freelance basis, but isn't sure how to find it. Should she advertise on Fiverr, or Elance, or...? How does this work and how do you get started as a freelance graphic designer? Any tips or recommendations would be really appreciated!
Hello all!! I'm losing sleep over this.. 24 year old almost 25. My current situation is that I am teaching English abroad. I have a degree from a prominent university in an unrelated field (BA). I love art, especially illustration, and I also enjoy graphic design. But I can't decide between marketing and graphic design. [more inside]
I am looking for online resources for logo design and branding that contain the creative briefs, brainstorming notes, sketches, design process, and full style guides for well-known projects. It doesn't have to have ALL these things, but the more it has, the better. Books are welcome too.
I need to advise a graphic designer whose skills are in print design only about expanding their skillset to include front-end web design work. At this time, the designer has a very, very basic understanding of web design. [more inside]
I run a podcast network, and we're revamping our merchandise. We have no designers on staff, but we have lots of designers in our audiences who love our shows and have great ideas, and we'd like to tap their expertise. I'd like to ask for design idea submissions from designer-listeners on-air without asking for spec work (or seeming to). How, specifically, do we make that call to action - what language should we use? (The work, incidentally, is paid.)
Recently I am sure I saw a script or action that analysed an image file and instead of generating the average colour, looked for a key colour (for example a logo colour) and provided that colour value. For example it might look at this image and give you the blue or the pink rather than a beige / skin tone average. Does this sound familiar?

Hi all, I have a quick ask for a graphic designer. Need to mock up a landing page - does not need to be final design, and with about 24 hour turnaround. Don't want to spend a ton of money - up to $100. Are there any places I can go to ask / designers willing to help out? I would ask designers at my job, but this landing page is for a personal project and they are extremely busy already.
Graphic designers who work exclusively as freelancers might or might not reach a point where they want to get full-time jobs, perhaps because it gives them a chance to save up more, or maybe because it offers them a stable paycheck when freelance work is sporadic. Question is, when freelance graphic designers apply for a design job in a creative agency, how do they write a compelling resume? [more inside]
I want to learn more about Design in Québec, see examples of work, understand the view of the profession, the job market, the vocabulary and so on. Can you give recommendations of nice french-canadian design blogs, websites, communities and articles?
I'm a graphics and multimedia artist working for the federal government who's always used Macs. It's again time for me to get a new system (laptop, please) and for the first time in my career I feel the need to explore my PC options (Apple has apparently abandoned its professional users). Unfortunately, I have no idea where to start looking. My new system needs to be commercially available from a vendor that can do business with the federal government. Building my own system is not an option. I perform a full range of creative functions including graphic design, video editing, photography and webcast hosting, so I need plenty of graphics power and fast processing. I don't, however, need a huge local storage capacity since I work off of our LAN. Where do I start looking? Any recommendations on models and/or features?
I have some artwork that I want to put on coffee mugs for friends. Though I see a few DIY sites, I am not sure what resin to use to hold up in microwave so would like your recommendations on commercial sites. I may eventually do bulk orders if I decide to sell so if you have any recommendations that would be different for bulk orders, I am game for those suggestions as well. Vistaprint was around $20-25 after all was said and done. Thanks, and enjoy your weekend.

I'm a graphic designer and I should know this. I'm also over-thinking, as usual. What would you call this style of design used on This label of italian candy ? I've always loved this look and described it as many different things but I've never known the exact style of lettering/ overall general design term. I usually just describe it as "vintage hand drawn really fancy lettering, old school labels." which is, you know, super professional of me. thanks!

I am producing a TEDx like event entitled "Visionary Graphic Design - The Los Angeles Influence" A friends of mine requested a list of past and present graphic design/ designers /LA designers / agencies / brands from the area. This is what I have so far for artists: Saul Bass, John Van Hamersveld, Ed Ruscha, Gary Baseman, Charles and Ray Eames, Sister Corita. Any other suggestions of artists/agencies/brands?
I was reading interviews with various successful graphic designers, and realized that most of them cold-called their future employers and sent them samples of their work. Are there any resources out there that list design studios, book publishers, editors, writers, ... that one can send work to? I just got news that I got an internship at an architectural office (altough I just graduated as a a graphic designer) in Tokyo, which is crazy exciting. However, they can't offer any compensation (small studio) so unless I find another job next to this, I need some really cheap solutions. I just sent an email to the studio, asking them for assistance, but figured meta could help. My plan is to stay for 2-3 months. I saved up some money from side jobs, and don't mind spending it on this experience, but the less it makes a dent the better. My only idea so far was to work as some kind of au pair (I speak English, German, Dutch and Croatian fluently, I'm good with kids, but I am a guy, which I guess is not too popular a gender for babysitting), in exchange for a room. Any ideas? Also, some place where I could look for a small job on the side (preferably something where I could use my design skills, but don't mind a day job)? Also, how much can I expect to spend monthly if I'm, technically, still on a student budget? Thank a lot!

Posting for my wife, a graphic designer who is tasked with doing a website layout job for a client. Here's the rub: The company has an existing logo that's red and blue, but she doesn't necessarily want to use red and blue as the dominant colors in this particular layout, but someone from the company is convinced that they MUST use red and blue as the primary colors throughout the site. I've had no luck coming up with any kind of evidence to support my wife's point, and so now I'm here to query the hive. Do any of you design-minded folks know of any articles or collections of layouts that might help my wife make her case? Sorry if the question is very vague.

I'm a graphic designer, employed full-time with a marketing agency. Yesterday my boss said I have to take down examples of work I've done while at the agency. In trying to determine if I can legally show these samples, searching the web is providing conflicting info. Things worth mentioning (a) My portfolio specifies that the work was done on behalf of my employer (b) I never signed anything restricting the use of these images and (c) The images are of works that have appeared in public (stores, events, etc). Is there something "official" I can refer to that shows where the rights to these images lie, especially as they apply to a personal portfolio?
Graphic Designer asks: Can I use a laptop as my "main" computer? I've been a designer for 20+ years and have used every mac since the original, but I've always had a desktop mac as my go-to machine. Now, it's upgrade time, and I'm thinking of using just a laptop for everything. More inside... [more inside]

I need a clear ruler with picas, points and line thicknesses on it, for measuring printed materials. I want it today. I'm in Australia and go shopping on the Gold Coast or Brisbane. The nearest thing I've found is at Officeworks but the picture is too small to be able to tell if it's what I need and they appear to only sell it online. I'm willing to pay up to $100. Maybe more if it's super-duper.

Graphic Designer who wants to start her own screen printed shirt line (i know... I know). But doesn't want to get them printed on ugly looking shirts.
I want to start my own T-shirt company (i know I know. Don't roll your eyes). I am a graphic designer and would like to create shirts that are stylish. Basic screen printed shirts with sayings etc. While I know how to screen print I think my best bet is designing and then getting them printed through, well, an online shirt printing company. The trouble is most of them are very limited and have just the tacky crew neck shirt kind of thing. I don't want to do cafe press or zazzle style printing. So, What's a good company to go with? any suggestions? For example take a look at JacVanek.com Not crazy about her designs but her shirts are what I'm looking to print on. That urban outfitters style! Thanks!

An old friend recently came to me with a job offer. It's to design a few dozen graphics illustrating business concepts that will be put on flashcards. I have no formal graphic design experience -- I've never taken classes or courses -- but I'm talented enough and am fairly well-versed in digital painting. In all respects (money included!) this sounds like a really cool job for me, but I'm worried I won't be able to deliver. Should I take it anyway? [more inside]
