Gramma, Grandmama, Nana, Oma, Nona, Gigi?

What do you call your grandmother? What do your grandchildren call you? What names for Grandmother do you like? I'm about to have my 1st grandson soon (yay!), and will need a grandmother name.

Decoding cancer-addled ramblings

In my grandmother's final days battling brain cancer, she became unable to speak and she filled dozens of index cards with random letters of the alphabet. I'm beginning to think that they are the first letters in the words of song lyrics, and would love to know what song this was. This is a crazy long shot, but I've seen Mefites pull off some pretty impressive code-breaking before! [more inside]

Make a trip to see elderly relatives, even if she caused odd mini-drama?

Should we make plans to drive several hours and stay in a hotel, after flying across the country with our young kids (who'll be ages 6.5 and 4.5) next Spring, so that they can meet my husband's elderly relatives, with whom he has always had very good relationships... that is, until his octogenarian Grandmother said something to him over the phone that caused my husband to suddenly have a strong negative/ambivalent reaction to the whole idea? Memory book/gift for a new grandmother

My friend is having her first child, late in life. This will be her mother's only grandchild and I would like to get a gift for her. They are a nontraditional family, however. The grandmother was a single, unmarried mom and her daughter will be as well. The grandmother likes to journal, and ideally I'd like to get a memory book for her, but all the ones I've found geared to grandmothers ask tons of questions about the grandfather, the wedding, the marriage, the baby's father, etc. Can anyone recommend a suitable memory book or a place where I can get a custom one made for a family that fits this description? Short of that, what are other great gifts for a new grandmother (she will be living with the mom and will help raise the child)?

Is it appropriate for me to attend my friend's grandmother's funeral?

After a slow, sad decline over the past decade, one of my best friend's much beloved grandmother has passed away. While I never met her ouma in person my friend has often shared stories of her life, the things she had taught her and more recently the sorrow of her drawn out illness and her fears for the future as it became clear she didn't have very long left in this world. My question is: is it appropriate for me to attend the funeral service this coming week? [more inside]

Technology aids to help grandma get more out of life?

My grandmother is in her mid-90s now. She's still fairly active, but her eyes bother her, and I've seen that take away two of the basic pleasures of her life. One is reading the newspaper. She can only read the headlines now. The other is mahjong. The combination of light and script on the tiles make her uncomfortable. [more inside]

Need a surrogate older sister... where to find?

What I want is an older sister /grandmother/ auntie type - someone wise I can write letters to from time to time, who will write me thoughtful letters back and offer suggestions and whatnot. A life coach? A counsellor (or therapist)? Does anyone offer this service? I would happily pay a reasonable fee. [more inside]

I can't think of one, I'm exhausted

My 90 year old grandmother is barely conscious, rarely eating, and is losing her mental faculties. I visit her every lunchtime to try and get her to eat. My mother (her daughter) takes the evening shift for dinnertime. I'm not coping well. Any suggestions to help me make this easier, so I'm not sobbing my heart out every day? [more inside]

Help with ideas for a book?

My grandmother used to write me a few handwritten notes each day ranging from a few words to a couple of pages. At age 11 I started saving them. I have thousands of notes saved, about 20 years worth. She was a real crazy woman and some of the notes are hilarious. I want to somehow incorporate them into a book. Any ideas on how to go about doing that?
