I really thrive in an environment that promotes free thinking, conversation about books and ideas, subsidizes personal growth, and has a genuine sense of community. I want to create it in my own school one day. I'm currently a college senior considering whether I should apply for an English or folklore MA, a MAT, or 'other'. I'm still unsure about being a teacher, but time is almost nigh. Could use help structuring my options and the consequences.

I'm in College Park, MD for graduate school. My lease ends in August, and I feel like it's time to start looking for a place. I want to stay within a few minutes of campus (lived in Hyattsville before, and really liked that) but also want to try to get a place between $500 to $700 before utilities and cable. I've mostly just known people for the past few places I've lived, so I'm looking for some advice on when to start seriously looking, where to look, and other advice.

In five years I'm planning to pursue an MA in an artistic field. I live near an Ivy League university; my current teacher has a degree from that university and is encouraging me to apply. I had ruled it out because I had never considered myself anything near "Ivy League" before (the closest I've come is blowing an undergrad interview for a different school). What can I do between now and then (five years) to make myself an attractive, creative Ivy League arts grad school candidate?

I am applying to graduate school, and have been gently nudging a former colleague for their letter of recommendation that they agreed to write on my behalf. For the past month and half I have routinely followed up, politely, and empathized with his circumstances as to why he could not get to writing it. He told me repeatedly it would be written. Now my application is incomplete and it is due tomorrow.

I'm applying to graduate programs for a MA in counseling. I'm closer to 50 than 40 and haven't been a student in nearly 20 years. One program wants "at least one academic reference" among my three letters of recommendation. Does this person necessarily have to be a former professor of mine?

I'm having trouble dealing with dissatisfaction with my first post-college job, which makes me feel more than a little over-entitled. My frank impression is that the workplace is in shambles and that I'd been lied to in the interview process; more charitably, I'm wondering if perhaps this particular posting just isn't for me. Given the details, what's the best way for me to go about readjusting my mind for the position, readjusting the position for my mind (i.e. closer to what I was told it would be), or giving up the ghost and going for something different?

What are potential career options for an MLIS graduate interested in using language and translation skills on the job as well? I am a 21-year-old undergraduate student who will be graduating one quarter early in March 2011. This summer I'm applying to the UW's iSchool MLIS program and hope to start Autumn Quarter 2011. I am very interested in traditional library work, but in the last couple years I have worked hard to learn Spanish. I'm currently training to be a Spanish-English translator and interpreter as well, as this will help pay for my MLIS degree. I would really love a career that could incorporate my growing interests in linguistics and translation, as well as my interests in the research and service-oriented aspects of librarianship. Any suggestions? I know the State Department has some positions that would incorporate all these skills, and I'm looking for other options, too.
