I have just started my PhD, full time on teaching/research fellowship, in the same field I did my masters and bachelors degrees. This is my first semester, and I am expected to take the qualifying exams in January. Problem is, I seem to have forgotten a lot. I have been out of school for five years since my masters, and, studying for the quals, even topics that I have covered before, nothing seems to 'stick' to memory. [more inside]

I'm looking for information for applying to grad school while abroad. (PhD programs in Political Science/International Relations). I graduated from college in spring 2006, and I'm planning on applying next year (Fall '09) to start in Fall 2010. I'm also considering going to Israel in July and staying for about 10 months, and I want to make sure this won't impact my grad school plans in any way. [more inside]

Are you generally able to apply courses taken for a M.S. at one school for credit in another school's PhD program if you're doing a B.S. -> M.S. -> PhD? For more specifics, we're talking Computer Science, and more specifically, to apply for Stanford's PhD program (or another reputable US university). [more inside]

I'm going to pursue a Masters/PhD in Cognitive Visual Neuroscience. I now know how to ask for letters of recommendation - thanks - but how do I write a killer letter of intent/application essay? Alternately, what are the major mistakes/pitfalls new students make when writing such a letter? Answers need not be Psych specific.
