I'm trying to trade money for education

I would like to take a graduate level class or two this Fall in San Francisco. I have a job, so I'd like my classes to be in the evenings and on weekends. I don't really care about getting credit or a degree, and I realize I'm far too late for formal Fall admissions. What kind of educational options exist for me? [more inside]

How do I get a good apartment at the right time?

I'm in College Park, MD for graduate school. My lease ends in August, and I feel like it's time to start looking for a place. I want to stay within a few minutes of campus (lived in Hyattsville before, and really liked that) but also want to try to get a place between $500 to $700 before utilities and cable. I've mostly just known people for the past few places I've lived, so I'm looking for some advice on when to start seriously looking, where to look, and other advice. [more inside]

How Do I Become Ivy League Material?

In five years I'm planning to pursue an MA in an artistic field. I live near an Ivy League university; my current teacher has a degree from that university and is encouraging me to apply. I had ruled it out because I had never considered myself anything near "Ivy League" before (the closest I've come is blowing an undergrad interview for a different school). Help me tell me friend she's a terrible writer

I am currently a student in a graduate program. A very close friend, who is in the same program, has begun sending me essays for school and correspondence related to her job search to proofread. In doing so, I have noticed a pattern: her writing is full of truly awful, egregious run-on sentences. Nearly every sentence is a run-on. My friend is very smart and accomplished, and I'm not quite sure how she's come this far without this issue being brought to her attention. She has been experiencing disappointment in her grades and career search, and I suspect that this problem may be contributing to the situation. (We are in a highly competitive and nitpicky field.) I think that as a friend, I have a responsibility to bring this to her attention, but I have no idea how in the world to do so in a way that's sensitive and doesn't make her feel bad or damage the friendship. Do I need to tell my friend? If yes, how do I bring it up?

I just got into a top journalism school, but I want to be an entrepreneur

I'm 24 years old. I graduated in May with no debt from what is, frankly, a terrible college with a bachelor's degree in psychology. From there, I got into a top journalism program that will take 2 years to complete. My debt from that won't be astronomical, but I'm still worried about it. I wrote for my school paper and people really loved my work. My career goal if I were to go down this road is to write feature stories for New York Magazine and Esquire. I'd be satisfied with myself if I did that, even if the money wasn't fantastic. However, I've always dreamed of having my own dress company. [more inside]

Grad-school-Filter-Again:

I've been accepted to PhD programs in neuroscience at NYU, University of Chicago, and into an MSc program in medical biophysics (with a heavy neuroscience focus) at the University of Toronto (most people reclassify into PhDs). The difficulty: 1) No one program is exactly perfect. 2) My partner-in-crime is a med student in Toronto, and she will be in Canada for minimum the next 6 years. So what's my best move, considering 1. I hope for a career in research (academia/industry) or science writing. 2. I could see myself spending my life with this girl (but that said, I am 25, for what it is worth) 3. I am concerned that staying in Toronto will limit my career opportunities [more inside]

SLP client's behavior interfering with therapy

Hi all, I'm an SLP grad student doing language-phonology clinic this semester and one of my client's behavior is getting in the way of therapy. She's 5.5 years old and is home schooled. It's quite clear there's no discipline at home and now I get to look totally incompetent for it. Any ideas about what I could do? This child spends most of the one-hour session mouthing off, spending 10 minutes on one sip of water to avoid work, pounding on the two-way glass (mom taps back, oy), and falling on the floor and telling me, "Me died." I've tried rewards but it seems she doesn't associate the rewards with anything. Just takes them and demands more. [more inside]
