Would I be better off in grad school or on a psychiatrist's couch?

I am on the verge of applying to a graduate program in history at UMaine, but I am worried that I'm doing it for the wrong reasons. I grew up in a very blue collar family in rural Maine, and I've always wanted to prove that I could succeed in an academic career. Do any of you guys have a similar experience, and if so did you make the decision to go to grad school? Did it meet your expectations, and did it exorcise your demons? [more inside]

Two Great Tastes That Go Great Together?

Asking for a friend: Buying a house and going to grad school...can it be done? There are various circumstances in my life which make this a very advantageous time for me to purchase a house, however, I am also planning to quit my job and go to grad school in the spring. The mortage payments will be less than I would pay in rent, and between help from family and financial assistance I will be able to afford all my expenses, but am concerned that if I apply for financial aid before finishing the mortgage paperwork, it will cause issues with the lender. Is this the case? If I don't purchase the house now, due to other circumtances it could easily be 6-8 years before I have this opportunity again, if ever. Any advice appreciated!

How do I get a good apartment at the right time?

I'm in College Park, MD for graduate school. My lease ends in August, and I feel like it's time to start looking for a place. How Do I Become Ivy League Material?

In five years I'm planning to pursue an MA in an artistic field. I live near an Ivy League university; my current teacher has a degree from that university and is encouraging me to apply. I had ruled it out because I had never considered myself anything near "Ivy League" before (the closest I've come is blowing an undergrad interview for a different school). Help me tell me friend she's a terrible writer

I am currently a student in a graduate program. A very close friend, who is in the same program, has begun sending me essays for school and correspondence related to her job search to proofread. In doing so, I have noticed a pattern: her writing is full of truly awful, egregious run-on sentences. Nearly every sentence is a run-on. My friend is very smart and accomplished, and I'm not quite sure how she's come this far without this issue being brought to her attention. She has been experiencing disappointment in her grades and career search, and I suspect that this problem may be contributing to the situation. (We are in a highly competitive and nitpicky field.) I think that as a friend, I have a responsibility to bring this to her attention, but I have no idea how in the world to do so in a way that's sensitive and doesn't make her feel bad or damage the friendship. Do I need to tell my friend? If yes, how do I bring it up?

I just got into a top journalism school, but I want to be an entrepreneur

I'm 24 years old. I graduated in May with no debt from what is, frankly, a terrible college with a bachelor's degree in psychology. From there, I got into a top journalism program that will take 2 years to complete. My debt from that won't be astronomical, but I'm still worried about it. I wrote for my school paper and people really loved my work. My career goal if I were to go down this road is to write feature stories for New York Magazine and Esquire. I'd be satisfied with myself if I did that, even if the money wasn't fantastic. However, I've always dreamed of having my own dress company. [more inside]

Grad-school-Filter-Again:

I've been accepted to PhD programs in neuroscience at NYU, University of Chicago, and into an MSc program in medical biophysics (with a heavy neuroscience focus) at the University of Toronto (most people reclassify into PhDs). The difficulty: 1) No one program is exactly perfect. 2) My partner-in-crime is a med student in Toronto, and she will be in Canada for minimum the next 6 years. So what's my best move, considering 1. I hope for a career in research (academia/industry) or science writing. 2. I could see myself spending my life with this girl (but that said, I am 25, for what it is worth) 3. I am concerned that staying in Toronto will limit my career opportunities [more inside]
