Snail trails on Garmin Nuvi 255W. When out and about this device is now making pale blue 'snail trails' on the map tracking the car from A to B. It is working as it should otherwise. Does this mean that the device is on its way out? I checked some forums but could find any mention of this bizarre behavior.
Hi mefites, I'm researching for an art project that needs a robust GPS unit they can put in a project that will be mobile around a few mile area. The GPS needs to be fairly robust in terms of ability to withstand shakes and jounces, being upside down or turned and twisted. We're not talking bouncing it like a basketball but rather the unit will be in a larger package moving about and being shifted around a lot. We need to be able to find the unit via GPS for a 24 hours run time. Actually, the run time needs to be at least 12 hours but using 24 hours as a way to give some leeway. When I say GPS, really it's a GPS plus the ability to signal someone where it is located. It seems to me like a cell phone would qualify for this. What are some of the options? Robust, power miser, and locatable in a 5 mile wide area. That's about it. Thanks for any tips on this.

A researcher at my workplace has asked for help finding examples of his topic, early examples of "GIS (Geographic Information Systems) or GPS (Global Positioning Systems) technologies in film and TV", "examples of early precursors to map related technologies". I found someone else's Ask from earlier this year that hits on some likely ones, but he's on the lookout for older and more diverse instances if you can think of any. More details and examples below the fold! [more inside]

I'd like to purchase an aftermarket radio for my Ford Freestyle. I purchased an eclipse radio 4 years ago but it has turned into an epic POS. I'd like the following features: -Bluetooth -ability to plug in my iPhone to play podcasts and Pandora etc -gps navigation -xm would be nice, but the other features are more important I researched my last radio and got the worst POS imaginable. So your suggestions are welcome. I'd be ecstatic if I could find something that functioned at this point.
I'm looking for information regarding the feasibility of a hidden GPS tracking system for bicycles. The goal is to track/recover stolen bicycles. This product looks promising (if it was actually available), but also looks like it would be easy to spot/remove. Ideally it should be able to be inserted into the frame tubing so it could be installed in various types of bikes. This is for a community wide effort with local law enforcements cooperation. Has anyone heard of this being done before? Either on an individual level, or better yet a community Implementation of some kind. Thanks all.

Are there any great (or even good) hiking specific GPS apps for iPhone? Ideally, I'd be able to download a particular region of maps, enter and set waypoints, and show the distance and direction from my current location to a previously defined waypoint. Current speed and time to waypoint would be nice, but not necessary. The app must work without an internet connection. [more inside]
Am I the only one having trouble with iOS 5 location-based reminders being really, really inconsistent? This is the only thing I miss from my Android phone. On my Android phone, I could hold the search key and say, out loud, "navigate to 123 main street" or "navigate to the nearest drugstore" or "navigate to John's house" ... and Google Nav would open and begin navigating. Does anything voice-activated like that exist for iPhone? [more inside]

I used to have an app on my Nokia E71 that would allow me to set waypoints and then provide a distance and bearing back to that position using the phone's built-in GPS. You could store thousands of GPS waypoints, either by using your current location or by entering long-lat; and organise waypoints into groups. There was no need for any data access. Does something like this exist on Android (HTC Desire)? What I'm not looking for is an offline SatNav program like CoPilot or MobileNavigator.
