Since I'm semiretired now, I've offered to help our local land conservancy plan, map, and develop a new preserve just a mile from my home. One of the tasks will be to map all existing trails and roads on the property. The staff at the conservancy asked that they receive the files in a GPX format.
Soooo... I'm looking for an iPhone GPS app (I'm using a 4s running 6.1.2) that will allow me to: Map a hike, indicate and name multiple waypoints, and export the hike as a GPX file. It would also be great if I could attach geotagged photos within the app.
Any suggestions? And, if anyone has any experience with this type of activity, is there any function that I'm not thinking of that would be useful? Thanks much!

We have been thinking of buying a GPS for our car; but been having a surprisingly difficult time making up our mind (at this point primarily between the Garmin nuvi 50LM GPS navigator and the pricier Garmin nüvi 1450LMT 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator). Would love to have your recommendations/suggestions if you have used either one of them (or a similar product).

Snail trails on Garmin Nuvi 255W. When out and about this device is now making pale blue 'snail trails' on the map tracking the car from A to B.
It is working as it should otherwise.
Does this mean that the device is on its way out? I checked some forums but could find any mention of this bizarre behavior.

A researcher at my workplace has asked for help finding examples of his topic, early examples of "GIS (Geographic Information Systems) or GPS (Global Positioning Systems) technologies in film and TV", "examples of early precursors to map related technologies". I found someone else's Ask from earlier this year that hits on some likely ones, but he's on the lookout for older and more diverse instances if you can think of any. More details and examples below the fold!

Am I the only one having trouble with iOS 5 location-based reminders being really, really inconsistent? (I live in rural Japan, for what it's worth, and have my home address stored in Japanese in my "my information" contact entry) And what, if anything, can I do to make it work more consistently at a bare minimum?

In the past week I’ve spotted
this Red Tailed hawk twice in the same area of southeast Washington. He has a band on his ankle and some type of radio harness. Out of curiosity I was wondering if anyone might know what kind of research is being done and who may have banded it.

I'm going to be doing remote fieldwork in the Pacific. If you've done remote fieldwork, what GPS did you use and how did you obtain the right maps for it? I've been looking at
Garmin and
Trimble, but I'd be very interested to hear from mefites what they think would cut the mustard.

I lost my GPS in San Francisco, where's the best place to get a cheap replacement? I'm currently a bit west of Union Square. I'm just planning on going to a Radio Shack on Market Street as I head towards the Embarcadero today but if any of you mefites have better suggestions please let me know.

It seems the ac-adapter plug thingy (i.e. the cigarette lighter) doesn't work in my car. I suspect a blown fuse. I have neither the time nor the inclination to take it in to get fixed if I can do it myself. Halp?

I'm training for a marathon and I use a Garmin GPS watch. I'm wondering: of course it transmits to the satellites as I move forward; but does the fact that my arm (with the watch attached) moves back and forth - as opposed to my entire body moving forward as a single unit - have anything to do with the accuracy? I apologize in advance if this sounds vague or else is even irrelevant.

My Garmin Nuvi (350) won't navigate when I attach it to my car's charger, which is a bummer for obvious reasons. It turns on, but the screen shows an image of it being attached to a PC, and it only goes back to navigation mode if I unplug it.

Hi there, I'm looking for advice on the right GPS unit. This would be my first purchase but I have used a few in the past and I know what didn't work for me and what did.
I've read a bit but to be honest I still don't have a clue about manufacturers, specific models, chipsets and everything else. I was wondering if y'all could help?

What is the best GPS unit to buy for my fieldwork, that would ideally display a list of homes to be mapped in a spreadsheet format and allow touchscreen entry of information into the spreadsheet (coordinates, consent obtained [yes/no], why home was unable to be mapped [drop-down menu])? Does this type of interface exist for GPS units?
