I am in a career ladder position in the Federal government. I'm approaching the end of my first year on the job. I have heard from colleagues/friends in government, that going up to the next GS-level in the ladder is almost automatic (requires sign-off from supervisor). Is this true? How do I request this increase from my supervisor? Also, can you help me find documents online which show that one is eligible to go up a grade after one year?

I would like to find out the starting salary for a particular graduate program within a Victorian (Australia) statutory body, and how it compares to private sector salaries. I have been able to find Federal government pay classifications but not the Victorian ones, but I believe they should be available somewhere. Unfortunately, Google has not been helpful. Can someone enlighten?

I believe my company, a government contractor, is using alot of grey areas in their employee time cards to get away with paying as little as possible. For example, I am listed with them as "salary", which by my understanding would mean I get x amount of payment per pay period. However, they still have everyone fill out a time card, and pay us per the hours we have worked.
