Need Help Reading Vidal

What Gore Vidal book would you recommend to start with / which of his books has been your favourite ? (Could apply to non-american readers). ...am asking as his tone and general outview seem to match what a friend is looking for in writing. Yet he seems to have explored quite a few writinggenres, and i'd like to let Friend discover him as a gift.
Thanks for your help

SewingFilter: How to set in a gore without it looking bad?

I can't get the hang of inserting a triangular gore (godet?) into a slit in the fabric. All the online instructions I've found gloss over the really tricky bits (the point, and finishing the seams afterward.) Can anyone point me to the broken-down-for-complete-newbies instructions? I will be sewing by hand and need to use a historical seam finish. I do historical costuming. A great many of these garments call for inserting a triangular gore (I've also seen these called godets, not sure of the difference) into either a slit in the fabric or a seam. The ones on the seam are easy to do - you just sew the gore to one panel then sew the other panel onto the combined piece- but I continually struggle with the ones set into a slit. The point at the top always comes out looking wrong! I've tried it by hand and by machine and can never seem to get the hang of it.

I am currently working on a 14th-century wool buttoned hood that contains two gores to add fullness to the shoulders. I want to enter this for competition, so I'm taking a great deal of care with it, handsewing throughout using period materials, etc. But these gores are giving me FITS. I can't figure out a way to get them in so that I can finish the seams neatly (either by flat-felling or by just stitching them down) and so the point doesn't look strange.

Can anyone point me to some sort of tutorial, or give me instructions yourself, on what I should be doing here? Hand-bound buttonholes don't give me pause, but I'm tearing my hair out over the gores.

Looking for a Kerry/Gore SNL sketch

Does anyone else remember this SNL sketch with Gore and Kerry commiserating about losing to Bush? My wife I and both vividly remember a sketch (we think it was Saturday Night Live but it might have been Mad TV) with Al Gore and John Kerry both talking (in the beginning) about how they're not bitter about losing to George W. Bush. Kerry keeps his cool, and when he's done saying he doesn't hate Bush, Gore says "I also hate him. I hate his squunched-up face." Also something like "You lost but I won. I should be president."

Anyway, we'd love to see it again but it seems like NOBODY else in the Google-verse picked up on it because I can't find any part of the quotes I mentioned or anything else with Gore and Kerry together. I've looked on Hulu.com and Youtube to no avail.

Did anyone else see this, or did we completely make it up?

It's never the creepy janitor.

What horror films feature a mystery killer? I like watching cheesy horror movies because for me even the most poorly made ones are entertaining. My favorite ones are "slasher" films, where a crazed maniac kills off the rest of the cast one by one, usually with a knife. More specifically, I like slasher movies where the killer is a seemingly normal person who is later revealed to be the killer. Its fun to try to pick out the killer from the group, because there are always plenty of red herrings and missing details along the way to make it difficult.

I want to make a list of these kinds of films. They need to follow these two rules:

1. The killer's identity can't be revealed until near the end of the film. Usually this means that the killer wears a mask when he kills people, but sometimes the murders are shot from the killers point of view. If it turns out there are multiple killers, that is fine too, as long as they are all revealed near the end.

2. The normal person that turns out to be the killer must be at least a minor character in the film. If the character has never been on-screen or just made a cameo appearance as a pizza delivery boy at the beginning of the film, it doesn't count.

Here are the films I already have on the list:

Alice, Sweet Alice
Cherry Falls
Club Dread
Cry Wolf
Cutting Class
The Graveyard
Mindhunters
Psycho Beach Party
Scream 1, 2 and 3
Sleepaway Camp
Urban Legend and Urban Legends: Final Cut
What do you get the guy whose seen everything?

What do I put in a cult/horror/art/indie film care package for my (really non-traditional) dad that he hasn't seen? My dad's going through a set of really grisly surgeries and needs entertainment to get his mind off of it, so I want to send him some DVDs. (He can't read, due to an issue with his eyes, as well as the pain killers.)

The problem? He's got awesome taste in movies already and I've sent him everything I think would be just his thing -- and then some.

This is a guy who took me to see LIQUID SKY and THE SHINING when I was a kid. His favorite films tend to be weird-awesome-cult -- FORBIDDEN ZONE, PINK FLAMINGOS, MAN BITES DOG, KILLING ZOE, THEY LIVE. He was very involved in film in the '80s so he's seen most of the "important" cult works from then and before.

He takes great pleasure in exposing the small town biker folks around him to stuff that "blows their mind" -- whether that's MEET THE FEEBLES or Gwar concerts on tape. He thinks Rob Zombie is the coolest ever (he fancies himself an evil hillbilly).

I've sent him BATTLE ROYALE, SKIDOO, OLD BOY, FORGOTTEN SILVER, SERIES 7: THE CONTENDERS to positive reviews. He enjoys things like JACKASS TWO as well as ERASERHEAD. He hated HOSTEL, thinking it was too stupid and exploitive -- not enough plot.

He moved to the middle of nowhere a little over 10 years ago, so anything recent has a better shot of wowing him. He's tended towards American cult, so foreign might have a better shot. He will have seen anything that gets run on standard cable.

He's requested DEATH PROOF and PLANET TERROR. I'm throwing in HOLY MOUNTAIN and MISTER FREEDOM for good measure. What else can I send his way? (I buy media, so things that are available DVD are best, but I'll scrounge up a bootleg if it's perfect.)

Gore 2008?

Are there good avoidance or coping strategies for fainting at blood?

I faint all too easily at blood/gore. How do I avoid or at least cope better? I've got the whole vasovagal syncope thing in response to blood. I'll be watching a movie and see something particularly horrible and I'll have a couple seconds before I'm out. If I see it coming, I can get away and lie down/walk it off/etc, but the problem I'm increasingly facing is that I'm in situations - writing workshops, particularly - where someone will be reading along and drop some bloody scene in there and I'm charging out.

My problem is that I can make that clear going in, but no one seems to actually believe me, or they think the bar is way, way higher than it is. For instance, someone who writes goth horror will warn if there's extended gruesome torture, but a detailed description of a decapitation or two doesn't get them to think of warning me, and... you see where that's going.

On that front, I'm trying to be honest and specific about how bad it is, but what I'd really like to know is -- has anyone found good ways to not drop if a surprise is dropped on you ? Like in the middle of a movie where it's too far to the doors and there's nowhere to lay down?

Mitigation strategies? Anything?

as a civil-libertarian i greatly appreciated al gore's fiery speech on C-SPAN today. while the former vice-president looked a little heavier, i noticed his hair was much thicker than it was in the 2000 presidential race. did he get a hair transplant or is he combing his hair differently?
