What is the recommended way to buy a phone on Craigslist, switch to Straight Talk, and port numbers to Google Voice?

Currently, I have a Virgin Mobile PAYG smartphone. I'd like to get a phone on my family's Sprint plan instead (for the same monthly price as Virgin, I can get unlimited whatever). However, Sprint says they can't port my phone number because Virgin is a reseller of theirs. I've heard that you can port your number to Google Voice for a small fee, and then have Sprint port the number to a Sprint phone, but this advice was found on a forum somewhere and no one backed up the claim that it actually worked. Would it work? Have you done this? I'd really like to keep my phone number, and before I risk losing it, I'd like to know. Thanks.

I have a new smart phone on Virgin Mobile. I could have ported to Google Voice initially, using a number on GV I already had, but chose not to. I'm now getting calls from the cell's # and my GV #. Should I port over to GV completely and have just one number?

Another ditch-the-cell-phone-bill/Google Voice question: Google Voice made me give them my cell phone number (800-OLD-CELL) when I signed up, and then assigned me a new number (800-GGL-VOIC). However, I don't have calls forwarded from the Google Voice number to my actual cell phone - Instead, everything goes to voicemail. What happens if I cancel my old cell phone number?

My work is providing me a Blackberry with voice plan that I'm expected to carry during waking hours and I don't want to carry multiple phones or maintain my $50+/month plan; I'm trying to figure out the best way to merge the two. Oh, and one other catch- I'd like to set up Google Voice for work and would really like to use the additional features that come with getting a Google Voice phone number.

Hoping the hive mind can help me with a cellphone solution. I know nothing about cellphones and in years past have relied on the internet and a landline for my phone needs. I've used a combination of Google Voice (GrandCentral formerly), Vonage, and a cheap pay-as-you-go cellphone. I am now in a nomadic situation (US) where I do not have a reliable landline nor internet for the foreseeable future. It's time to get a real cellphone.

If I use Google Voice for a central phone number, and someone from Sprint calls me and I pickup on my Sprint cellphone (even though it rang on my Sprint phone, my home phone, and my work AT&T cell), will it be charged as Mobile to Mobile time on my Sprint bill and my wife's Sprint bill?
