How can I help my coworkers user Gmail/calendar/etc

My company recently decided to move everyone from Outlook to Google Apps. Now a lot of people who are used to Outlook (and MS Office) in all things are being hit with a new environment. It's going okay, but I've volunteered to give a short presentation on how to make the most of the new tools, since I have a lot of experience using them for my personal stuff. Can folks suggest good online resources either for me to mine for tips, or to hand out to users for their own reference later? [more inside]

How to make Maps cache ALL available zoom levels on Android?

I'm running Kitkat and Google Maps 7.7. Using the cache feature, I can save a certain area of a map. However, not all of the zoom levels are saved - if I zoom out far enough to encompass the area I want, the more granular zoomed in levels don't get saved properly. I've found this, but it seems that the functionality is no longer available in current versions (and I'd like to avoid sketchy options if possible). At the moment, I'm manually zooming in and caching lots of sections of the map to ensure that all levels are saved, but it's fiddly to do and there's no easy way to ensure that I've covered every section.

How do we use Google Drive properly? Folders aren't syncing.

I have a Google Drive question - I thought that once I set up a folder in Google Drive I could move files into it on my desktop and they would show up when I open the folder online in Google Drive. Why aren't they in the drive, even though I save them to it? I can't even find them in the downloaded Google Drive folder. Also, Google Drive is showing as an item on my "Desktop" and also as a folder in my "Documents" (Windows 8). Neither one seems to be syncing with the online version and they are different from one another. In order to save a file so that it shows up in an online Google Drive folder I have to upload it online from inside Google Drive. Any ideas? Am I trying to use it incorrectly? My assumption was that I could open a file in a folder in the Google Drive folder under "Documents" on my desktop, make changes, and the changes would show up when I open the document online.

Backing up my Gmail account

As part of a general digital cleanup (thank you, Heartbleed), I want to perform the long overdue task of backing up my Gmail account (with nearly a decade's worth of email) to my mac. I have two questions: 1) Is gmvault the only option? Is there anything more accessible to a user who hasn't used Terminal with any regularity in eight years, and even then wasn't very proficient using the command line? 2) If gmvault is the only option, or the most accessible option, can someone explain very clearly how to run it? I am unable to successfully follow the instructions on the gmvault website--they seem to assume that I'll intuit some necessary steps, when I actually need every step laid out for me.

My Google searches are being invaded by an email address

What was Google's early government subsidy, if it existed?

In Rebecca Solnit's latest LRB piece on San Francisco's tensions around the tech boom there, she makes an unsourced reference about "Google set[ting] itself up with the help of a $4.5 million dollar government subsidy". The LRB is very respectable but this claim seems a bit wobbly. Perhaps my Google Google-fu is failing me but I can't find a reference or more detail for this claim online. All I get is very vague and untrustworthy CIA funding conspiracy theories on tinfoil hat crank sites. I can't find anything re: that $4.5m figure. Solnit likely may not mean the CIA at all but some other kind of government subsidy. Can the MeFi hive mind help factcheck this claim? Are there reliable sources with more detail on this?

How much more secure are older low tech phones than the more modern ones

Are older phones or phones designed for poorer countries any less susceptible to spying than the latest Apple, Google or Android models? I've read about CEO's looking for the very old brick phones because since they don't have the sophisticated technology of the modern phones, they're harder to monitor or track. I understand the phones w/o apps are clearly more secure regarding third parties because they aren't sending personal data to companies. But what the government and everything else; voice, location via cell towers, SMS; the very basics.

How to keep Google from associating work e-mail with throwaway gmail?

(all e-mail addresses below are fakes, natch) I created throwaway@gmail.com solely for the purpose of having a Google voice account to port a cell phone number to. I no longer needed the phone, and consolidated what were two phones (work and personal) into one number. Since I didn't want to check another e-mail address when voicemail/text notifications came in, and since the discarded phone had been for work, I set up me@myworkplace.com as the address to forward all e-mails to, and also set up this e-mail as my recovery address for the throwaway@gmail.com account. This is the only association between these two accounts, and I have never publicized throwaway@gmail.com at all, to anyone. Now that I've done this, gmail users who enter me@myworkplace.com into the TO: field to send me e-mail see the icon I used for throwaway@gmail.com, and apparently the Google+ info that Google automatically set up for that account. It gets worse after the break... [more inside]

How can I make GMail messages appear w/ white text on black background?

GMail Themes only change the look of the inbox as best I can tell, not the background and text color of the actual messages. My grandfather's eyesight is degenerating badly, and he can read white-on-black much easier than black-on-white. I assume the answer involves user styles managed through the Chrome plugin Stylish, which has a lot of options for Google Chrome, but searching the web hasn't turned up a working snippet of code for user styles that will change the text and background colors. Someone is intentionally attacking me & my family online.

Someone has created a site via Google Sites that is radically defaming myself and my family. We're not talking about a 12 year playing a prank. It's a systematic attack with the most egregious accusations one can imagine. They're parroting my personal business site and posting info that is not only libelous, but fantastically horrible. The junk they've posted about myself, my wife and our two small children is heartbreaking. We believe we know who it is (but have no proof) and have contacted the FBI on advice of a lawyer. They've told us they'll call us once they get jurisdiction figured out and the cybercrime guys take a look. The kind SAIC looked at the site and understood the problem but only got the ball in motion. That could take weeks/months for them to move on this and the site needs to come down, now. HOW?
